Premier League 2013/14 Our chance to shine?
« on: May 22, 2013, 03:29:25 PM »
Maybe not qualifying for the Champions league offers us the best chance to win the Premier League?  In my opinion winning the Europa League would not mean anything to Spurs supporters except maybe for a few hours during the match and a day or two afterwards?  AVB needs to understand that the Europa League should only be used to gain experience for the young players?  Surely we have enough talent coming through to mix them with a blend of experienced players to get match experience in the Europa League?

So what do we need to mount a serious challenge?  Cover in both full bak positions, cover on the flanks and two decent strikers?  We are sound at centre back and in central misfield which are the backbone of most good teams.  Obviously I'm assuming we keep Bale?

How come Spurs can't find a Michu, Remy or Bentieke?  We are linked with players that we will never sign because they will follow the money to Man City, Chelsea etc  Let's get real and find the players who will give us proper cover all over the pitch and not dudes like Hudd, Townsend, Rose etc

Wigan have a few that might interest us like McCarthy and McManamin?  Lets get out there and find at least one world class striker (maybe Villa, Hugain) and strength the team with the type of players outlined above?

Can I have some of what you are smoking. If Bale goes, I think our biggest problem will be staying up, let alone winning the effing league.

Bale is not the only player in the world. If he goes, and I don't think he will, then we shall just buy another player. The top 4 teams haven't got Bale and they ended up above us. Football is a team support, not a one man support. If he goes then we just build a team that is capable of winning trophies.

And saw it through without exemption.

Gareth Bale has given the strongest indication yet that he is going to stay. He has said that WE must learn from our mistakes this season, that we are a young squad, and must try again next season.

For me, that is very good news. He obviously has faith in AVB and what he is trying to do at Spurs.

Maybe now some of the doubters will get behind AVB and support our long term plans.

I am also starting to think that Bale may stay for another season. The sooner he signs a new contract the better, as the media can then shut up and start making up other gossip.

I will get behind AVB when the team starts to meet it's potential. I appreciate that it is  not his fault that our chairman would rather give himself a big rise than invest in the squad. I also realise that losing Modric, and to a lesser degree VDV did not help him. The simple fact though are that we came one position lower than last year, regardless of the points tally. We also went out of every cup to rubbish sides. It's also a fact that the football we play is no longer entertaining. All those factors tell me that last season was a bad one. As much as I would like AVB to be sacked, I know it's not going to happen, so I will continue to get behind him. Man Utd, Citeh, Chelsea, Ars*nal and even Liverpool will be spending heavily this summer, if we don't invest, our squad simply won't be good enough to keep up with the competition !!

If we get priorities correct ie EPL and use europe for the young guns I think we can challenge the top 3.

Our undoing this season IMO was giving the Europa almost equal priority as the EPL, we should treat it the same as the league cup, put out the young guns and give them experience.  I do also feel we should give the FA cup a good crack this year.

We dont have the squad depth in quality to go all out for all comps it will end up with t usual injuries and damage our league challenge.

THFC "COYS" and that is all I have to say about that!

Couldn't agree more Metal, it is definitely a case of AVB getting his priorities right, something that I didn't think he did in 2012-2013, if he does and he gets the correct backing from Mr.Levy then I think we could well be pushing for Top 3 next season. Here's hoping.

I disagree about priorities. We are NOT Fulham or West Brom and should trying to win every trophy we can. If you are a small squad with a poor side, then you have to trade one competition off against another. To ask our players to play two games a week is hardly asking to much of them. As far as top three are concerned, we need to sign at least one top striker, a creative mid field player, a flexible quality full back, and cover on the flanks. That is 4 top quality players. Out the door we should be looking at getting rid of Huddlestone , Parker, Adebayor, Gallas, and Livermore. Of course, getting rid of Adebayor is almost impossible.

Man city , Man UTD and Chelseas will spend big again this summer. which means the  Gap is going to get bigger. Can't see us finishing top 3. I expect Liverpool and Ars*nal will spend again this summer. So Next season will again see us, Liverpool , Ars*nal and Everton to fight it out for the remaining positions.

Cant see us spending more that £20-25 million in the summer, which will mean we will get in 2 decent players or 1 top class player. either way that will not improve us enough to push for the top 3. Watch Man city & chelsea bring in 3+ £25M+ Players each. we just cannot compete with that kind of spending power.

On a side note , Was speaking to some German fans around town last night. And the view from them is that Holtby is highly regarded by the German fans and has a lot of potential. Not been very impressive yet, but hopefully with a good pre season under his belt, there will be a lot more from him next season.

Next season Man Ure, Citeh, Chelski, Woolwich Wanderers and the Scousers are all going to be shelling out cash like its going out of fashion and unless we spend around £50 million on 3 or 4 quality players will will be going backwards no matter if AVB, 'Arry or SAF is in charge.
As it is I can't see us challenging the top 4 after the summer activity expected at the 4 already in those spots because we needed to do it this year when we had a chance to really close the gap but Levy chose to change the manager and start over again just as we were on the brink of breaking into the top 4 on a permanent basis.

It's time Levy listened and understood the clubs motto "Audere est Facere" and for those of you that don't know what it means "To dare is to do !!!!!!!!!!"...... How about it Mr Levy ?

Why not both? If you are suggesting that we are or should be good enough to go for the League title then we are good enough to go for Europa league. Chelsea didn't see the Europa league as second class and they went on to win it and finished 3rd.

All I am saying is if we are good enough to win the League then we are good enough to take all the Cup competitions seriously.
