I think you under-estimate both Cole and Drogba. Also the lack of sell-on will be reflected in the low enough transfer-fees.

both Cole and Drogba will be motivated as it will be in the twilight of their careers, and they will want to show alot of ppl they were under-rated by the Media, fans, etc. who have now already writtten them off as has-beens - what better motivation could there be ?

a player is not a slave.

he can always say no to any loan-deal that is mooted. also, will Orient be able to fit him into their midfield currently ?

Oh, for f**ks sake. You remind me of someone.

"a player is not a slave."

Because slavery = signing a contract saying you will do X and be rewarded Y and Z over a period of time? I'm sorry, but I'm having a hard time feeling any sympathy here.

In my opinion it is absolute madness that players and their agents are given so much cloak and dagger wiggle room. A contract should be a contract. If you're not sure, make it a 1-year contract.

Having a really f**king awful day today so I'll just go all out. If Modric goes to Chelsea, I hope his wife (assuming he's married) leaves him for John Terry, who then cheats on her. I don't care if this is all an elaborate media ploy to make Levy look like he's valiantly trying to keep Modric so he can get the figure he's after. If Kranjcar were doing this, I would absolutely understand. He's been treated like s**t. Modric has not been. Would any of this Modric baiting be taking place if he hadn't come to Spurs? Maybe, but I doubt it. He's going on about a verbal agreement? How about the legal agreement he signed? He didn't have to sign it. I want him gone. If he doesn't want to play for Spurs then he doesn't deserve to.

I've got no problem with ambition, but show some f**king respect. The thing that pisses me off the most is that these perfectly timed and translated interviews always end with, "but I'm happy at Spurs and the fans have been amazing", or something along those lines. Just turn in a f**king transfer request and get it over with.

Loved that post apart from the last line.

Loyalty is a 2-way street. seems that fans only respect players when they obediently kowtow to the club's interests, and are expendable the moment a better player comes along to take their place.

a contract is there to compensate a club if a player wants to leave for another club - therefore a player saying he wants to leave does not mean a club loses out, as a transfer-fee compensates for the player's loss.

fans should understand that players are not primarily fans but are working in their job. Therefore should be treated with respect if they wish to change employment, just as any fan with a job would have a right to.

A transfer-fee at the market-rate will  compensate a club, when a player moves before contracted-term ends.

Of course you are right. If the firm up the road offers me twice as much money to do the same thing I,m off no problem. And if they have superior equipment all the better. We as fans are loyal to a fault. We support the club through... well thin and more thin mostly, and we expect the same from our heroes. Unfortunatley they are driven by the same things as us, greed , avarice and the desire to look after our families. We want them to be better than us it would seem, which is ridiculous they are footballers not Gods (although a few of them might take some convincing of that) They have no more loyalty to  Spurs than I would  have to United Biscuits or Tescos whoever is paying the most gets me and I will give them my best till I get a better offer. We all would and we all do.

Loyalty is indeed a 2-way street. Modric going to the media trying to force a move based on what Redknapp correctly described as a farcical bid from Chelsea looks a bit like one-way traffic to me. Again, I'm having a hard time feeling sympathy here. I understand that if he wants to go he's going to leave, but Chelsea aren't exactly struggling to pay the bills. I want him gone, but why should he go for less than he's worth? Because they have more money and play in the Champions League? I think Levy is a bit more tight with his purse strings than that.

a player's worth is decided by a free-market in football. if a club underbids for a player, another is free to bid for the same under-valued asset if they so wish.

only Chelsea have bid 22m (opening bid) and now 27m for Modric: a good creative player that still has a poor scoring-rate and a poor rate of assists - 2 criteria important for a so-called attacking creative player.

if nobody bids more, then 27m is the market-value for Modric, a player bought initially for only 16.5m.

Carroll's fee was inflated as Newky knew that Chelsea was picking up the tab, Torres fee was tied to how much Carroll would cost.

Modric, despite his skill, has a low scoring-rate and a low assist-rate, so 27m is not that unreasonable considering he is mainly deemed as a creative a6tacking player. when someone like Nasri is valued at less than 25m, and the better player to Modric (far better goals-scored and far better assists-ratio) younger Fabregas is valued at only around 32m.

Keep him. Simple. Bid comes in, rejcet it. Transfer request comes in, ignore it.

It's really not hard. Guy refuses to play? Stop paying him. He'll soon get bored and want to play again.

If he wants to f**k us around then lets f**k his whole career up and keep him here until he either, A) Buys his contract out (can't do it for four years) B) Contract runs out.

Money grabbing c*nt.

i would love this to happen, its never been done before with such a high profile player ( i cant recall anybody anyway) so let him rot. 25mill he's worth? there or there about's, we wont get anybody half as good for that money so what's the point selling him when we cant use the money to bring in anybody??! we can afford to keep him, and really send a f**k you to the rest of these 'contract' signing players.

don't sign for 6 years then modric, you have yourself to blame

modric
can rot....

I'm not going to pretend I understand the dynamics of wages and transfer fees in the transfer window 100%, because I don't. But as 218 quite rightly said... 7 mil more than Henderson? I don't think that's shocking because Liverpool paid too much. I think it's shocking because Henderson is a player Liverpool paid that much for HOPING he might be half as good as Modric in the future.

I think that his potential suitors are aware that Modric offers something more than the random goal or assist. He puts it all in motion. He's capable of scoring, and honestly I think he's unfortunate statistically because I can think of several times he's hit the post or crossbar just this season. I'm not going to build him up more than that as I think he's gone from a player who in my eyes was a dedicated and humble Spurs player to someone who might as well play for Chelsea.

Nasri is in his final year so will obviously go for less. Give Modric a quality striker and he'll easily have 10+ assists, guy created 60 odd chances last year.

its really quite sad and a metaphor for 'supporters' when a player like Modric who has done so much and played with honour, self-sacrifice (playing thru injuries, etc) can be rightly hailed as a great servant for the club who's shown dedication and work-rate, can now suddenly become such a hated figure in the space of a heartbeat, just for showing that he would like to leave his current job.

it seems that all the effort a player puts in over years of hardworking service means nothing, in the end.

true loyalty is valuing what a player does over the full period of employment at the club, not just naked hatred as soon as he decides to leave.

Oh please. Naked hated? I just don't like how this is taking place. Using the media to try and force a transfer is disrespectful. What does "self-sacrifice" or "work-rate" have to do with that?
