Gudjohnsen joins on loan
« on: January 28, 2010, 05:30:22 PM »
Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp says the club have signed former Chelsea and Barcelona forward Eidur Gudjohnsen on loan until the end of the season.

The 31-year-old, who was also attracting interest from London rivals West Ham, comes to White Hart Lane from French outfit Monaco.

Redknapp told BBC Radio Jersey: "The chairman has probably done a deal for Eidur. We spoke to him the other day.

"We've taken him on loan until the end of the season to see how it goes."

West Ham had been confident of arranging a temporary deal to bring in the Icelander after he underwent a medical at the club.

But Spurs have convinced him to opt for north rather than east London after further talks on Wednesday and a medical.

The deal for Gudjohnsen, who only joined Monaco last summer, will be a bitter pill to swallow for new Hammers co-owner David Sullivan, who had reacted angrily to news of Spurs' interest.

"We thought we had a deal and the player had even had a medical," he said. "We then heard that Tottenham were trying to speak to the player.

"I can't say I am happy about it but I believe in karma and what goes around, comes around."

Sullivan is prioritising strikers as he looks to boost the Hammers squad amid their battle against relegation, with Benni McCarthy poised to sign from Blackburn for £2.5m and Manchester City striker Benjani Mwaruwari also on their radar.

For Tottenham, meanwhile, Gudjohnsen will provide cover for a number of positions as they look to push for a top-four finish.

They already have four strikers in Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch, Robbie Keane and Roman Pavlyuchenko at the club, though the latter's position is far from settled as the Russian looks to negotiate a move away from White Hart Lane.

However, Gudjohnsen's arrival will not necessarily mean one of the quartet will be leaving.

It is thought he is more likely to be used as an experienced replacement for Giovani dos Santos, the Mexican playmaker who joined Galatasaray on loan until the end of the season on Wednesday.

Gudjohnsen twice won the Premier League title with Chelsea, in 2005 and 2006, and helped Barcelona to quadruple glory in 2009.

I have no idea what a DDOS attack is but it sounds a bit like a girl with large breasts attacking us? Is there any video of the attack as i would like to watch that one day?

I'm always happy when an established player joins Spurs. Gudjohnsen has proven that he is a good footballer. Not sure though what he has to offer us. Hopefully he'll score some important goals...  :P
And I really hope we can now finally sell Pavlyuchenko. Another Slav bites the dust  ;D

Gudjohnsen has the experience and leadership that we need, he has also played champions league football and i think that this is a good move by spurs to bring him in on loan till the end of the season. I dont see how Keane will play ahead of Gudjohnsen, also what do you lot think will the best player to put him alongside?

I think he must have joined us because of our champs league prospect! If we get the 4th spot we might even buy him! Although i can see him partnering Defoe should Crouch is a no no. Intelligent Footballer like berba and i think he would play really well with the likes of Modders and Krancj beside him. Cant wait~!

Great goal vs Stoke at the weekend!

I wouldn't mind if we signed Eidur in the summer, in fact i really hope we do and with listening to his interview after the Stoke game on the beeb website i think he could be happy swapping Monaco for WHL  ;D ;D

He's got a great footballing brain ala Sheringham, doesn't have great pace but definatly has the ability to be sucessfull here!

Agreed, he looks like one of those proper Harry signings, where people thought he was past it and yet he can still be a great player.

I agree, I think Eider if far from past it, hes still only 31 and when you think about it Drogba is 33.

Eidur just needs some confidence again and start enjoying his football. It can't be good for any body sitting on the bench for 3 years.

I think once he gets his confidence back he will be running the show

 :o :o :o
IMScouting reported towards the end of last week that Spurs have agreed a deal with Monaco to keep Gudjohnsen on loan for next season. Apparently the extension was writen into his current loan deal!  ;D

He's looking like a different player now he is playing regular football and its great to see because he is a fanstasic footballer

However, this morning Eidur may not be staying past the end of this season  :'(

Monaco have confirmed that they expect striker Eidur Gudjohnsen to return to France when his loan spell with Spurs concludes.

Spurs snapped up the ex-Chelsea and Barcelona hit-man in January for the remainder of the season as Harry Redknapp bolstered his attacking options.

Gudjohnsen, who has two goals in his last three appearances for Spurs, confessed is enjoying his time at White Hart Lane.

The Icelandic striker recently claimed Spurs had an option of extending his stay with the North Londoners through next season.

However, Monaco have denied that such a deal is in place and that they will reject any offers for his services this summer.

"We are pleased Eidur is enjoying his time in England, but we expect him back," confirmed a club spokesman. "We will ignore any bids."

Mayb if he sulks enough (althought i don't he's that sort of character) ala Berbatov, he may get his move here.
i can only hope Harry and the board can work something out with Monaco and bring Eidur back for our (possible) Champions League run next season.
