Bale to have medical at Tottenham

Southampton full-back Gareth Bale will have a medical at Tottenham on Wednesday after the two clubs agreed a fee, reports BBC Radio Wales.

Saints boss George Burley earlier denied reports a fee had been agreed between the two clubs.

But sources close to the 17-year-old expect him to sign within days.

Spurs had a bid of about £10m accepted by Saints in January, but Welsh international Bale rejected the chance to move to White Hart Lane.

The teenage left-back has only one year left on his contract and was also linked with moves to Ars*nal and Manchester United.

But following Southampton's failure to gain promotion this season the prospect of first-team football in the Premiership at Tottenham looks to have been enough to change his mind.

Bale made his debut as a 16-year-old last year for Saints - becoming the second youngest to ever play for the club - and this season he has become a regular for Southampton and Wales.

He became the youngest Welsh international when he played against Trinidad & Tobago in May last year - setting up a late winner.

Good news!!!

Big news. Will be a very good signing, for now and the future. But I won't be happy untill I see an official statement from the club, but this is looking good.

Don't get too carried away lads. Wait 'til Southampton or ourselves officially announce this is all true. Just hope he isn't another Walcott flop.

People slate the price tag, overpriced.

Thing is they said the same with Berbatov.

Atleast we're taking a damn risk, well played Spurs, COYS!

The latest from itvsport.co.uk

Tottenham will wrap up the signing of Southampton left-back Gareth Bale in the next few days, according to reports.
Thursday's papers suggested that a move was imminent and the full-back was rumoured to be undergoing a medical at the Spurs training ground (Wednesday).

The 17-year-old has also been linked with Manchester United and Ars*nal but Spurs look set to move early in the summer transfer market, as they did a year ago when they brought Dimitar Berbatov to the Premiership from Bayer Leverkusen.

While Berbatov led the attack for Spurs in his first year at White Hart Lane, Bale is expected to bolster a defence that conceded 54 league goals last season.

Spurs did not have a regular left-back last season - Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Young-Pyo Lee and Ricardo Rocha all had spells there - and Bale's attacking instincts would also suit boss Martin Jol, although the formalities have not been announced.

Saints boss George Burley wanted to keep Bale at the club for another year to ensure he gets regular first-team football but failure to win promotion to the Premiership seems to have dashed those hopes.

Bale's former Southampton room-mate Theo Walcott has seen his chances limited since moving to Ars*nal but Bale would expect to challenge for a regular starting place at White Hart Lane, particularly with Spurs' problems on the left.

A move would also be consistent with Spurs' policy of buying the best young British talent when possible.

Latest news on Bale.....

BBC Sport Wales understands that Gareth Bale will sign for Tottenham Hotspur within the next 24 hours.
The Southampton and Wales full-back completed his medical at White Hart Lane on Thursday.

Saints boss George Burley earlier denied reports that a fee had been agreed between the two clubs.

But the 17-year-old Welsh international is understood to have arranged a move for an initial fee of close to £6m, that could rise to £10m.

The View Of Bale From A Saints Fan
« Reply #27 on: May 24, 2007, 10:52:06 PM »
I remember Bale being very off colour for Saints about a month before the end of season. He was out of energy and looking pretty drained. But this is because he's 17! What would you expect?

I mean, you can't expect Bale to play left back every game of the season - if there's 3 games in a week, I'm certain Jol will rest him. It's just a physical incapability at his age!

For Saints, he was good in the air and had a good tackle- but it was his reading of the game- A lot of players- like Nugent- he just read their game and put the tackle in when needed... Clearing off the line if needed, he throws himself in the way of anything- which is why he got injured against Derby last week. He's not scared of anyone.

yep thats what i heard...

Tottenham will today complete the signing of Southampton full back Gareth Bale.

The Guardian newspaper claims that Bale will complete his much talked about move to White Hart Lane in a deal worth around £10 million to the south coast club.

The paper claims that Bale completed a medical at Spurs yesterday and also agreed personal terms, quoting a close family friend as the source of it's information.

If a deal does go through as expected today, Spurs will have beaten off interest from Ars*nal and Manchester United to sign the promising young star.
