Tottenham will wrap up the signing of Southampton left-back Gareth Bale in the next few days, according to reports.
Thursday's papers suggested that a move was imminent and the full-back was rumoured to be undergoing a medical at the Spurs training ground (Wednesday).
The 17-year-old has also been linked with Manchester United and Ars*nal but Spurs look set to move early in the summer transfer market, as they did a year ago when they brought Dimitar Berbatov to the Premiership from Bayer Leverkusen.
While Berbatov led the attack for Spurs in his first year at White Hart Lane, Bale is expected to bolster a defence that conceded 54 league goals last season.
Spurs did not have a regular left-back last season - Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Young-Pyo Lee and Ricardo Rocha all had spells there - and Bale's attacking instincts would also suit boss Martin Jol, although the formalities have not been announced.
Saints boss George Burley wanted to keep Bale at the club for another year to ensure he gets regular first-team football but failure to win promotion to the Premiership seems to have dashed those hopes.
Bale's former Southampton room-mate Theo Walcott has seen his chances limited since moving to Ars*nal but Bale would expect to challenge for a regular starting place at White Hart Lane, particularly with Spurs' problems on the left.
A move would also be consistent with Spurs' policy of buying the best young British talent when possible.

Latest news on Bale.....
BBC Sport Wales understands that Gareth Bale will sign for Tottenham Hotspur within the next 24 hours.
The Southampton and Wales full-back completed his medical at White Hart Lane on Thursday.
Saints boss George Burley earlier denied reports that a fee had been agreed between the two clubs.
But the 17-year-old Welsh international is understood to have arranged a move for an initial fee of close to £6m, that could rise to £10m.
