The meaning of Berba's tattoo

I've been in contact with my Chinese friend & showed her a pic of Berba's tattoo, on the off chance that it was Chinese writing & that she may be able to decipher it. Well, she's come up trumps & says it means 'TOUCH WOOD'.

It's a phrase we use with regards to a superstition that hopefully things will turn out alright, so I guess it could have some relevance to him as a footballer & maybe in his personal life.

Anyway, thought I'd share that with you all.

"Touch Wood" is a very famous superstition here in Bulgaria. It means that whenever you wish for something in a loud voice you should knock or touch wood in order to protect yourself from dark powers ("envious eyes" from others, injuries for example) and things not to get spoiled. I'd guess Berba wants nothing to stay into his quest to fulfill his dreams :-).

P.S. It is also common to wear a piece of clothing with its back side out as a "protection" from envious eyes. The latter is used mostly at weddings or when you feel threathened.

The armband that Berbatov wears is a show of solidarity for 5 bulgarian nurses who are held in Libya under sentance of death for supposedly allowing children to become infected with aids. I cant remember the full details but its certainly something along those lines.

I have just received more info regarding the tattoo from a journalist I have been in contact with in Portugal & he has this to say:

It has to do with luck and it shows he's very sensitive to bad luck. My Chinese acquaintances had a big duscussion about the right translation and it's not exactly what you were told, they say. Knock on Wood or Touch Wood is the expression used to protect from evil but they assured me it's the other way around with him. It's to make luck appear. It means "Lucky One" or JACKPOT, it's what they say when they win a bet or find money in the street.
