Our Season so far
« on: November 04, 2012, 09:32:02 AM »
First the good news. We beat Man Utd for the first time at Old Trafford for 23 years. We rode our luck, but we got away with it. Secondly we are sitting 5th, although this time next week it may be 9th.

When we signed AVB I didn't want him, and nothing has changed my mind. I thought he was tactically good, but lacked in man management skills. I have changed my mind, he is tactically inept. Yesterday against Wigan at home, the only person in the entire stadium that couldn't see it was a 4-4-2 game was AVB. We needed Dempsey as an attacking mid fielder, with DeFoe and Adebayor up front. Even after we went 1-0 down, he still wouldn't change the formation, and took off our leading goal scorer. I accept we have injury problems, but AVB just doesn't utilise the players we have properly. Anyway, game by game,

Newcastle away 2-1 loss. We played quite well and deserved a draw.

West Brom home 1-1. In my opinion we were lucky to get a draw

Norwich home 1-1. We were truly dreadful and deserved nothing from that game

Reading away 3-1. win. A great first half, and a poor second half. That said, we deserved the win and got it.

QPR home 2-1 win. One of only two wins at home, and QPR were unlucky not to get a draw.

Man Utd away 3-2 win. See the above

Villa home 2-0 win. In my opinion our best game this season, albeit Villa were terrible. An easy win that we deserved

Chelsea at home 4-2 loss. A bit flattering on Chelsea, although I think they were a goal better. This typified AVB's tactics. As soon as we went a goal up, he made a defensive change, we sat back and the conceded two goals,

Southampton away 2-1 win. Played like Barca in the first half, and Enfield town in the second. We gripped on for dear life and scraped a lucky win.

Wigan home 1-0 loss. Our worst performance this season. Unmotivated players, poor tactics and poor substitutions. 1-0 was flattering on us.

We are out of the league cup after dominating the game against Norwich in the 1st half, and lost because of AVB's tactical changes. We are struggling in the Europa cup, however only time will tell on this one.

In short, even with the injuries we have, I believe a decent manager would have clocked up at least another 4 or 5 points, thus leaving us a comfortable 3rd. Instead, with Man City and Ars*nal coming up, the chances are we will be mid table withing a few weeks.

I know those of you out there that thought AVB was a good signing will be reluctant to deride him, and will probably stick by him, even when he gets sacked, however it is my belief that the man's inadequacies are showing through, and his luck is starting to run out.  Get ready for a bumpy ride !!

A very fair and accurate summaristion of the facts this season Baldbloke and I like you still think AVB is a numpty, I'll admit at one point after QPR, Man Ure and Villa I was starting to think maybe but no motivation and no flair is starting to cost us big time.

It's pretty much going the same way as it did at Chelski last season, I just hope we don't wait as long as they did to sack him !!!!

BB I actually expect us to go out of the Europa cup next as to be honest we dont have the squad depth to compete in multiple comps this season and do well in all (even though by this stage of our development we should).

I would rather see us put all efforts and player energy into the EPL this season and finish within the top 4, rather than limp through the Eurpoa and get dumped out at the 1/4s or 1/2s whilst see us drop down the league due to players being tired and injured.

For me a manager is gauged on results, so far for AVB the results and points picked up have been ok, yesterday should have been a 3 pointer if we could have created some chances and put them away.  I am not even that bothered about loosing as long as it looked like we could have got something from the game and had a performance to cheer about but so far we are not playing good football and it is getting concerning.

Without Dembele we seem clueless and cant create.
THFC "COYS" and that is all I have to say about that!

A fair and accurate summary of our season so far.  AVB just hasn't got it and if we lose next two games we could see a reaction from Levy?  Hudd looked like msomeone that was plucked from the crowd at the last minute to play in midfield !!!  Dempsey is struggling and Bale was off form probably due to the fact that he played last Sunday and midweek in that useless cup game?  Walker needs to go back to school boy basics and realise you don't have to do a trick every time you get the ball.  Vert is lost at full back even though he oozes class. If ever a game was crying out for a 4-4-2 it was yesterday and especially after we went 1 down.

The players look as if they have lost believe in AVB's tactics and they are playing with fear?  Yesterday was a very low point in our club's history.  Looking at the two managers yesterday it makes yu think we picked the wrong guy as Martinez appears to have it all both tactically and from a man management point of view.  Friedl made 3 one on one saves yesterday and Wigan deserved their win even if their time wasting tactics were a bit over the top.

Actually, I think the summary of the games was pretty reasonable. Although I think references about luck are unnecessary as luck always plays a huge part in games. The fact is the best teams seem to have more luck, because they are doing the right things to make that luck happen. Yes we were 'lucky' to get the win at Man U, but 'unlucky' not to get something from the Chelsea game. Swings and roundabouts really.

The only thing that matters are the points on the board. At present it reads W5 D2 L3. So our win % is 50%. Man U 80%, Chelsea 70% Man C 60% Arse and Everton 40%. So if the season follows this trend, it would be reasonable to hope that we should finish in the top 4, if we can turn some of these loses into draws.

The game against Wigan was shocking and I agree that the substitutions were a contributing factor in being unable to change the game. Against Chelsea we should have scored more from the chances we had and defended better to win or draw the game. Against Norwich we created numerous chances but again show a lack of fire power up front. But against Wigan, we were not even creating chances, which I think is a problem.

However, I am not going to jump on the AVB out campaign just yet. I have always said I will support him until Christmas and then see where we are at. I will then be able to make an informed decision on my judgement rather than a preemptive uninformed guess. If percentage wise between now and Christmas we get the same points tally it should result in us having about 14 more points with something like W4 D2 L2.

The problem is it may be the next 2 games that we lose. Looking ahead it will likely mean  having to win against West Ham, Fulham, Swansea and Stoke and drawing against Liverpool and Everton. However, if we can get something from either or both of the next two games it will make this task easier. So I am looking for us to get 14 more points by Christmas day. If we achieve this or more then AVB will have my full support. If the points are between 10 and 14 I will have to see what we do in the January transfer window to improve the squad. Less than 10 points and I will join the AVB out campaign.

Does this sound reasonable? If anyone else would like to state the points needed in order to either support or reject AVB, I would be interested to know.
Maybe next year...

We mustn't forget that spurs are 5th (the same points as Everton in 4th). And we also mustn't forget our injury list. I think he is doing a good job; AVB

What a short memory you have! We have just lost one league game against a fiesty Wigan! As a long life Spurs supporter, this is part an parcel of any season. Standard stuff!!

You all seem to have already forgotten the "Harry 13 game nosedive" at the end of last season that cost us 3rd place! I don't know why some of you don't apply for AVB's job, as you seem to be really clued up on your football formations and tactics?  I rekon Levy would welcome you with open arms and sack AVB immediately!

Call yourselves Spurs supporters?  >:(

First of all it wasn't 13 games. Secondly, why do you chose to remember a 6 week period rather than the 4 years we were great. Until Arry was at the club we were mid table at very best. He took us to the highest positions we had ever been and the quarter final of the CL. We are now playing dreadful football, and even when we win we are hanging on by our finger nails to get the result. If you attended the games and spoke to people at the Lane, you would soon find out that the vast majority of supporters didn't want AVB, and non of them have been convinced by him as yet. Believe me, by showing support for this moron will only make you look stupid when he is sacked in the next few months.

I also think our demise can be traced back to Burkinshaws days. He assembled probably one of the best teams in our history. The purchase of Ardilles and Villa straight from being World Cup winners was a big statement.
Moving on, he resigned over the emergence of player power, and from then on we became a club that seemed to sell our star players, Hoddle, Gazza, Sheringham, Berba, Modric, and some more.
These days, apart from the top 3, we all feed off the scraps, so is it any wonder we can't make a sustained effort at the title.
All we can really hope for is to battle it out with Ars*nal for 4th place.

Although I don't agree with your opinion that AVB is definitely going to fail and be sacked shortly, I have to agree with this.

Even when we win we look awful! Hopefully this is due to a period or transition and the team adjusting to a new style of play, rather than a taste of things to come.

We look extremely vulnerable even when we're winning and it was very much the same with AVB at Chelsea. We've been under lengthy periods of being pinned back in our own half against pretty much every team we've played.

Hopefully at the end of this season we can see that AVB is making progress with the team and have optimism for the future.

I have said from day one, that I hope I am wrong and am left with egg on my face. The people that are pro AVB have dug a hole for themselves, as they have openly said that they believe his better than Arry. I respect the people that have said they have their reservations but will give him a go, but don't respect the people that honestly believe he is a better manager than Arry, when his only previous experience in the prem was a complete flop. Just watch the football the team are playing (even when we scrape a win) and try and convince yourself that this is a team that are motivated and know what they are meant to be doing. AVB is to young and far to inexperienced to have been given such a massive job. Managing the only good side in a pub league (Portugal) was of no help at all to him at all.
