Summer transfer window
« on: May 09, 2012, 09:27:26 AM »
Looks like Jan Vertonghen the Ajax defender and Belgium centreback could be our first signing for 8.1 m.
A welcome addition assuming it all does go ahead.

Maybe a little too hot off the press as not such a definite deal now.

We definitely need a new CB or maybe even two as Dawson, King and Gallas are all awfully injury-prone. If it's Vertonghen, good. Actually, for some reason I'd like to see King retire and move upstairs as it hurts to see that this inconsistent training has caught him up and badly. We also have Nelsen but I'm not sure whether his contract will be up in summer.

Whether we qualify for CL I see quite a few leaving. I think Čorluka, Bassong, Bentley, Jenas will be somewhere else come autumn, Kranjčar and Gomes could be sold as well. I personally would sell Rose and bring in someone with more ability. Also, I don't think Adebayor will return.

I don't think anything will happen until after saturday and we find out who wins the Champs League....... get rid of Rose .... Why?

Apart from his indiscrection against Villa I thought whenever he has played he's done well... and he is young too !!!!

Last summer I thought we were well off of being able to finish 4th, believing we needed to sign a few key players to give us a chance to compete with those around us. However I was wrong, the squad we had were good enough to finish 4th (just) but we did. Now I could hold my hands up and say, I was wrong. or I could say, if we had made those signings 'where would we have finished? I think 3rd would have been definite and looking at where we were I think we could have fought for the title, even if we did not make it.

So I will say it again: We need 1 top class striker who can score for fun who has preferably played in the champions league

- Falcao is now out of our league unfortunately, Clint Dempsey is a good player but not sure he would be what we are after, don't shoot me but Berbatov is looking a wasted talent at Man U, but what I would really like is for us to get Ba and Cisse from newcastle, a ready made partnership of quality.

-1 young striker who could burst onto the scene with no fear. (I like the look of Abel Hernandez from Palermo, or Bas Dost from Heerenveen)

We just need cover on the right and left wings for when Lennon and Bale are injured or out of sorts.

We also need a better quality LB. BAE may have had his best form yet at the start of the year, but remains a liability at times.

We still need two CBs that can form a partnership, Kaboul + 1 or two new ones. we have cover for this area but need a 1st team pairing. Jan Vertonghen looks a good possibility.

The main thing I would like to see is us moving fast in the transfer market. Make swift signings and give them a chance to settle in and we can know what our intention is for next year.
Maybe next year...

So Vertonghen was at the final game at N17 and has had the VIP tour.
But once again the wrangling starts over his transfer fee.
Allegedly Spurs valuation is a couple of million less than Ajax value him at.

From what I've seen of Vertonghen, he is just the player we need. Fast, powerful, good reader and organiser, and above all a cool head under pressure, a player who can actually pass out of defence rather than hoof it. Awesome with Kaboul

No Champions League is a major blow to our summer
transfer policy.
Bale and Modric are certain to WANT
to move on even if Levi says 'not for sale'. This
means of course contingency planning for their
departure for, albeit, top dollar on the last day of
the transfer window.
Replacing Bale like for like cannot be done from within
the  club or premiership. However there are 2 players
at the club given a decent run who can be effective
in that position, Niko and Pienar. We also have Andros
Townsend and Danny Rose as cover.
Modric however is a different animal. Creative and
hardworking. We have plenty of the latter on the books
but only Hudd with the former. Given this season was
completely missed due to injury, reliability is not
his middle name. Replacement or indeed cover for Modric
need to be in place EARLY this summer. Granted Niko or
Pienar could step in but it has been tried and they did
not deliver. Joe Allen or his team mate sigurdson of
Swansea could be shoe ins as cover but not I fear as
replacements. I know you are all going to be shouting
out names of top quality foriegn based players, but
remember,We are not buying as a C.L. team and those
players will not want to sign.  Money will also be a factor
If the Modric and/or Bale money is yet to come in.

Could Gylfi Sigurdsson, the Icelandic midfielder now be our first signing.
There is a rumour going around that we have lined up an 8 million
deal for the 22 year old.
Should know more by the weekend as he reports back to pre season  training at Hoffenheim
 if nothing signed .

Dug this one up from 12 months ago. Its quite interesting really as much of it still applies. Only additions are : We need 2 strikers. Dempsey isn't good enough. We got Verthonghen, and unless Kaboul is going to recover fully, another CB as sorry Daws is too slow, and Gallas is finished. Caulker is still very young.
We most definitely need a top LB as I have been saying all season. Plus right and left sided attacking midfielders with real pace to supplement Lennon, who is always injured it seems, and Bale who even if he stays is used too much and has looked burnt out of late.

As it still puzzles me what this 'not good enough' means (10 goals in 37 matches is not bad for AM in my opinion), but I agree that another LB is needed. Luckily we'll have Danny Rose back with us for the next season and Townsend will return as well. They're not world class, obviously, and probably will end up in the 'not good enough' box. I think we should try to bring in Leighton Baines before he ens up at Manchester United.

Well I guess I ought to come out of semi-retirement to respond to this. Thank you for pointing out how this is still relevant today. I agree that the areas we needed strengthening are the same areas today. What I cannot understand is why we are able to identify this problem but there is a lack of desire from those in a position to do something about it. Why must we insist on being a borderline 4th team who dices with death as it were, relying on the other teams to mess it up, more than going the extra yard needed?

Obviously we would all like to see a number of world class players in our team, but the reality is we will not spend the amounts required to do so and if we are not getting champions league they wouldn't come anyway. However, we do not need to go out and buy a new team, we just need to rectify the weak areas with high quality, with the exception of the striker who if world class, would take us the extra mile we need.

Riff, I was about to put in the request for Baines as well, he would slot into our team and style perfectly and if the right amount is offered Everton cannot refuse it. It should be done swiftly and decisively, and not the usual wheeling and dealing trying to get the price at bargain basement level. If we do that Man U or others will step in.

I agree Rose is looking a better player and will provide good cover on the left side of the pitch. However, we could do with a new out and out winger, preferably one who can play on both sides. But again this just needs to be a quality player.

The area we have all been shouting about, since Berbatov left I would say, is a striker that can make the difference. Why don't we just offer 25 million for Rooney and make an exception to our wage structure? A crazy idea, I don't even particularly like him, but he would be amazing in our team and could easily become the next Gazza. We have always had that one player who was a cut above the rest. If Bale stays we could for a change have two.
Maybe next year...

Not a bad shout, I would say. I think that to show we mean business we must bring in a top first XI player from a stronger club, not squad players from abroad or just teams below us. Capturing Rooney would be an indication what to expect from us in the future. Sadly, I cannot see this happening.

What I wouldn't give to have Rooney in our team, it would show that 1) We really do mean business, and 2) that we are a serious contender for 1. The PL and 2) The CL and every other competition we are in, and it would also put the fear of GOD into every Team we Play, HOME and AWAY, but, there is one problem, unfortunately, the person who holds the Purse Strings won't spend the money to get him!!! There-in lies the problem, and has done for the last 4 yrs.
