When will the penny drop?
« on: October 17, 2011, 09:04:50 PM »
Once again after promising displays where we operated with two strikers, Arry goes back to one up front and we struggle to create anything. A simple comparison of our displays this season should reveal that we are much better with two. Will the penny drop with Arry or is he so fixated with fitting VdV into the team that he can't see the obvious?

Spurs have never managed to hold on to a lead by defending. For some strange reason 4-4-2 is the only formation that works, and should therefore continue to attack even when ahead

I think he does have to fit VDV in. The season VDV came in he played as a second striker thats why he scored the goals in the first season.

Now he plays deep and I do believe that he is fitted in, and :-X  although we will never know there could be a   clause in his contract that if he is fit he plays, cant think of any other reason we would have got him for the price we did!!!

I think that 'Arry has to play VDV as he is a quality player and with Adebayor up front and VDV behind I think that is a pretty potent front two although VDV is not an out and out striker.Like everything only time will tell and to be honest the only option is Defoe who is looking pretty sharp at the moment, it's a nice problem to have !o

Sorry lads the point I'm trying to make is that two real strikers keep two centre backs fully occupied and with good movement they will eventually stretch them. Using one striker results in a spare centre back who can then cover where and when necessary (how often do we see our forward players having two or even three men to deal with when we play this system). I think VdV is a wonderful talent but arry struggles to get a balanced team whenever he starts, maybe some of his previous managers have had the same problem. Anyway I hope he solves the riddle because I really do believe this team has massive potential.

I think you hit the nail on the head two real strikers, have we really got them at the moment, Adebayor and Defoe but after that we kind of dry up for decent proven and in form options !!!!!

IMO the biggest problem for us is the injury and subsequent complete loss of form of Aaron Lennon. We no longer have any pace and penetration on the right wing, and with Bale also struggling this year, everything goes through the middle, and it all gets a bit congested. VDV is a quality player, and if fit must be playing, in the similar role that Teddy Sherringham played.

Didn't look too bad against Liverpool or Wolves did we?

I hadn't noticed Bale struggling myself, and if Walker doesn't offer penetration I don't who does. That said I agree that we have no natural quality replacement for Lennon. Personally I would stop mucking around putting Modric or VDV out wide, and give Townsend a go. I have watched him play right wing and he was very good

Hmmm a difficult one to comment on after Sunday with VDV netting twice.
Defoe needs the games though to remain sharp.

VdV is the only player who seems to score when we play this system, god help us if he loses form. How long before Adebayor starts to get stick for poor performances like our other lone strikers have over the last year or so?
I noticed Samba was a constant threat threat to us in our box yesterday, I wonder if he would have been as adventurous if Defoe was parked on the halfway line waiting for a through ball?

Whilst VdV is a great player, he leaves Adebayor isolated far too often by working in the wrong areas.  He comes back too deep to get involved instead of lurking 30-18 yards from the box, it's nice to see him play with such passion and all that and I do love Rafa, but at the moment JD is bang on form, hitting the target more and scoring.

I honestly think we should alternate JD and VdV depending on the oppositon and if we're home or away, 2 up top at home with JD, 1 away with Rafa.  Plus it gives us the option of bringing on a sharp JD if we're chasing the game or if the other side have to open up if we're ahead.

Honestly think Rafa offers a fair bit in the midfield too, so can't see why against some teams we can't play all 3 of them (depending on form, the opposition etc.).

If VdV stopped all the silly working in the wrong areas he'd be closer to Ade and he'd score and create more...I don't want him on the ball in our half!  I want him on the ball in theirs!

COYS!

Does the formation matter when we are winning? to be fair you have to accomodate VdV when he is your top scorer.
