Once again Mr Keown spouts his normal negativity, go back and join your gooner mates or don't they have a comparable web-site to this, its about time you were banned from this web-site, that way the committed SPURS supporters that enjoy this site don't have to put up with your continual CRAP SPOUTING you MUPPET.  :ohyeah: :ohyeah: :ohyeah: :ohyeah:

1) every player has his price.... if massive hype takes his market-value way beyond his true value then its a great time to capitalise on that TEMPORARY situation..... just like Blackbum did with Mr Bentley (need I elaborate further  :D)

2) curently we have 2 players that fit the above category.... if Bale stays then Modric will definately be sold this summer.... to sell neither would be a frivolous and vain-glorious act..... anything above 25m we should grab for Modders.... a good player.... but also a VERY OVER-RATED player too..

Even with an ignore button this site seems to turn into a one man ego trip on every thread making reading a topic very difficult.

I can very rarely be bothered posting anymore and it seems to me others are doing the same more and more, anyone else notice this?

Yep as soon as a certain person Hi jacks the thread to spout his usual brand of s**te then I tend to ignore it, especially seeing as it's the same 3 topics over and over with the odd abusive interlude !!!

getting back on-topic re. last game.... AF has raised an important point.... how a 'fact' can camouflage real FACTS...

you say Modric had a high pass-completion ratio... I say thats only slightly relevant.. a CM will probably have the most touches of the ball in any game and also be in a position to make lots of short-passes.... I could just tap it backwards and forwards 5yds all day long and get myself a high pass-completion ratio...

whats more important are the moments of SIGNIFICANCE when in play.... and Modric, even as Bigv said, lost the ball numerous times in very dangerous situations especially..... also (and this NEVER gets picked up by the infant-minds) Modric on several occasions failed dismally to track runners well in his area of engagement, especially Pato had a field-day everytime he was 'up against' Modric.... I've seen the recording of the match now and was exasperated at Modric being a non-presence so many times when the ball was with Milan and near him....

the team looked more robust when Jenas-Sandro formed the CM-pairing and Modric was shunted upfield to 'support' Crouch (cos we all know how deadly Modric is as a goalscorer and numerous assists)....

with Sandro's emergence as an ALLROUND CM, as well as THudd's return soon and players like Jenas and Palacios who can both supply a better balance to any CM-pairing.... is there a greater need for Modric in the team ??.... I doubt it.

also... you mentioned the great games when Modric formed CM-pairings with others.... but conveniently omitted the games when it was the opposite....

MAYBE HE'LL STAY MAYBE HE'LLL GO.... but Arry would have noted the clear shift in the Spurs CM options recently....even if you haven't.

You have raised some good points Gk, it is easier for a CM to maintain a higher pass completion rate, when the pass is sideways or backwards this stat is not necessarily a true indication of how ell they have played. However, due to the number of passes that the CM has to make, the % pass completion being high is important. Due to the fact that 10% of 250 passes means 25 potential threats against our side. Whilst a winger may have a completion rate of 70% but having only made 80 passes they have given the ball away 24 times. So the player with the much higher pass completion rate put the team in more danger right? Okay it is only 1 more time but the statistics prove it, right?

WRONG! Of course it doesn't it just shows that statistics can be used in any way you want to prove a point but the true judgement should be through common sense and realistic opinions. Which player would you rather have, the one who can pass the ball successfully 225 times or the one who can only manage 56?

So I would suggest we look at what each player offers the team, compared with his weaknesses and then judge if the gap is too wide and the weaknesses are in excess of their strengths.
Maybe next year...

Dimexi... thanks for the adult response, it certainly makes a welcome change from the usual chimps tea-party chatter..

good point re. stats analysis, especially the point about CMs making the higest volume of passes on average.... but conversely, a player who makes fewer passes can have an abnormally high or low score depending on luck on the day.... eg. a winger may play for half an hour and may only touch the ball 10 times and misplaces the pass five times, due to heavy pressure on that wing... that would give a completion rate of 50% only....BUT THE CONSEQUENCES MAY BE LOW due to losing the ball near the corner-flag as opposed to centrally 20yds within his own half... THE OPPOSITE WAS THE CASE WITH MODRIC the last game (among others)..

thats why pass-completion-rates mean very little overall.... you may as well compare players with most mud/dirt on their kits after 90mins, to 'see' who's put in the most effort....MEANINGLESS.

overall, Modric in a 4-man midfield using wingers, gives us little in attacking-plays (as his low goalscoring/assists ratios show amply), but disproportionately weakens us far more defensively...

sold by August.

Although we agree that using statistics is not always the best method I have to disagree with your analysis of Modric. I do agree he was not at his best for this particular game, but you have said yourself that one game doesn't make a player bad. So if we go back to my previous statement ...

So I would suggest we look at what each player offers the team, compared with his weaknesses and then judge if the gap is too wide and the weaknesses are in excess of their strengths.

... I would have to argue that Modric must offer more to a side than his relatively low direct assists and goals. (which are just statistics by the way so be warned not to over use them). I think Modric is not only a tenacious midfielder that can keep hold of the ball and pass well, rarely giving the ball away (Milan game excepted). He is also one of the key players that can produce a cross field pin point a pass to Lennon or Bale, who then break and then cross the ball to become the players who get the assist for the goal that is scored. Modric then gets not direct statistic against his name, but truth be told, the goal was down to him.

These are only my opinions of course but if you don't believe me, or can not see how good Modric is then maybe a quote or two will strengthen my position, from the main man himself. :)

"I think he could play for anyone, he's that good. He's a fantastic footballer, amazing player, great brain," he said. "Not only is he a great footballer, he's strong, he works for the team, takes knocks and gets on with it." (March 2009)

"Alex Ferguson said to me after the game last week that he thought Modric was fantastic," (March 2009)

" Luka's key to everything that's happening at this place...if you want to move on to higher levels you don't start flogging off your best players - to anyone." (May 2010)

“He (Modric) is such a fantastic player if we start selling such a player like that then we might as well all go home” (Dec 2010)

'I wouldn't want to sell Luka Modric for £100 million,' he said. 'He's such a fantastic player. If we want to build a team to compete in the Champions League every year, we can't be selling Luka Modric.' (Feb 2011)

Now he has been saying these things for the last 2 years, so they are not designed to inflate his selling price and whose judgement is more accurate, experienced and worthy of being accepted? HR or GK? (not a personal dig Gk but just saying that none of us can come close to his opinion. We can give our own and we do not have to agree with HR but we had better have something really worthwhile and meaningful to say when we do.

Dimexi.... al excellent points (as always) and I agree with you, Modric is a very good player that could play well for Barca, Utd, Chavski ancd a few others at the very top... but I disagree on a few issues :-

1) Modric is not the only player to be able to hit widemen, as most CMs should be able to hit 1 of 2 players hugging the touchline mostly, as the FBs will not be touch-tight but close enough to challlenge by the time the ball gets to the wide-man..... for Spurs there are THudd, Jenas and even Palacios (yes Palacios) that can do that job..

2) Modric would be a great player in a narrow-3 in midfield as he can then not have to cover as much ground as a flat-4 using 2 wingers.... I mention this cos I think you can actually get this particular subtlety when others here would struggle to grasp that..... in a flat-4 with not 1 but 2 wingers, he doesnt have the athleticism to affect the full range of tasks expected of a CM... to both support the attack AND SWIFTLY RECOVERY POSITION when we lose possession....that's mainly why I think he's not ideal FOR SPURS... I'd prefer 2 robust players with good stamina and adequate pace to patrol that vital area OVER THE WHOLE 90 MINUTES in games, when we have the other 2 midfielders hugging the touchline either side so often....

3) tho a good player, Modric doesnt bring enough unique attributes that materially helps us enough to compensate for the weaknesses he also brings to our team..... as a CM in a flat-4 in midfield using 2 wingers..

will be great for either Utd or Chavski next season, in either of their systems.... the 25m+ will be gratefully trousered by Levy and Arry (despite the PR-spin to come between now and date of sale)...

get a room lads and quit the pretense. At least in there you both can have wild, passionate and unbridled disagreements minus the need for complimentary foreplay.
