Martin Jol has admitted that he can see the merits behind handing the winner of the Uefa Cup a spot in the qualifying round for the following season's UEFA Champions League.

Jol's Tottenham have made serene progress to the quarter-finals of the Uefa Cup, but face a test of their mettle in the last eight against holders Sevilla.

The Spurs chief admits victory in the Uefa Cup would be a tremendous achievement, but feels an added incentive of potentially securing a place at Europe's top table would be deserved.

Uefa have not made any indication as to whether they would consider such a move, but Jol would back any proposal.

"It would be a good idea," he told Sky Sports News. "There are eight clubs missing out on Champions League football because of their place in their groups.

"It (Uefa Cup) is a big competition nowadays, so that could be a good idea.

"But on the other hand, winning the Uefa Cup is a good reward as well."

The Dutchman is concerned that his side will have to take on Chelsea just two days after a trip to Spain.

"We will take it one at a time. First we will have to go to Seville, before the other match against Chelsea.

"I still think it is, I can't say rubbish, but it is a big problem in England.

"All the top teams are coping with it, so we will have to cope with it as well."

I think this is a great idea, its a great achievement in its self to win the Uefa Cup so being given a place in the Champions League would be deserving to the winners IMO.

To be honest though, it undermines the achievemnet of winning the Uefa cup if you are just put into the Qualifying rounds of The Champions League. It really confirms the Uefa cups status as a mickey mous European cup for second rate teams in my honest opinion. I do not agree with this at all and feel things should be left as they are.

I'm only agreeing if the team would go into the  later qualifying rounds not the first rounds. If they were entered into the first rounds then I would disagree with the idea.

I agree fully with you Storty. It's a joke that the winners of the Uefa Cup only get a qualifying place in the next Champions League. They should be placed straight into it.

Agreed, If it was into the group stages then yes I do agree that would be a good reward. However I do feel the Uefa cup would be undermined somewhat which could cause a few problems.

As Storts also mentioned, the winner of the Uefa Cup only gets a place in the qualifying round, which makes the Uefa Cup look extremely micky mouse style compared to the Champions League.

The inatoto cup is a micky mouse cup, not the f**king Uefa!

I dont think this will happen. Say we were to win the Uefa then there would be 5 English teams in the Champions League next season. You can already hear the French and Germans squealing about that. Platini has already said he wants to cut back on the amount of English, Spanish and Italian teams that qualify to give the smaller nations more places.

It is also a joke seeing a team finishing 4th in the league playing in the CHAMPIONS league, it is far too easy to get into it now IMO.

In my opinion Platini is talking out of his arse when he wants to reduce the number of teams from the big leagues.

You want too take the 4th spot away from Ars*nal / Liverpool and give it too the winner of the Welsh, Irish, Bulgarian or Polish league? Therefore handing the Champions League straight back too the same teams?

Can you see TNS beating Inter Milan?

What would you rather watch, Liverpool vs Bayern Munich or TNS vs Levski Sofia?

I understand the logic, making it fairer but don't be stupid.

People already think the Uefa Cup is a joke, I think the winner should stay in and defend their title.

Exactly. It is known as the "Champions League" so why is 4th place in a league table entered into it? :aaaa coffee:

It's become a complete joke then, because obviously it is given the title of CHAMPIONS League, and 4th place in a league isn't exactly the position of a Champion?

Very true Lew, but 4th place gives teams like Spurs a chance of getting into the champions League and play against the top teams.
