two observations i would like to add to the discussion;
1. Gomes occasional indecisiveness may have more to do with the fact that he has never had the luxury of a settled centre back combination to build on. I think that he has done incredibly well when you take into account that as soon as we appear to be getting near to a settled central defence the injuries kick in. Gomes was looking pretty confident when Gallas and Kaboul were forming a consistent partnership.
2. Regarding Bale. He was everywhere today but he did seem to be pulling back from some of the more fiercely contested balls. This is most unlike him as he seems to have no fear normally. But he was on the recieving end of some pretty thuggish tackles early on and i think Chelsea made it quite clear how they intended to curb him. If you can't catch him then cripple him. I think he was just trying to avoid spending Christmas in hospital.

Modric can fill that slot if needed as the gimp keeps reminding us. At the moment he is pivotal in the centre and cannot be placed on the wing. One of the star performers at present in the centre in his "best position"

as our 2 best CMs THudd and Jenas are injured, its important to play Modric in CM...as long as he has Palacios next to him there its not too bad a scenario for home games anyway...

Bale is v.good but getting a tad over-rated now.... we can use this by allowing teams to double him up on the leftside, and attack more down the right with Lennon and Hutton (the better attacking unit)...

I agree Biggs i thought he was excellent. Stayed switched on for the whole game and a couple of speedy interceptions. He clearence at the back post was superb.

Give me strength you lot.
Gomes is one of the best keepers in the league. he will make the occassional blunder [don't they all], mainly because he is a highly 'individual ' character. Get off his case at least life is never dull when he's around.
Now how about focussing on the positives.
1. A couple of years ago would we have believed a month where we beat Inter, Liverpool and Ars*nal, drew with Chelsea and qualified for the knockout stages of the Champions league, and achieved all this with a team that played with passion not fuelled by rapid fire cheque book signings.
2. Daws is back!!!
3. I thought Palcious was on the improve and is not looking to far away from full form again.
4. Bae was, once again, a game saver
5. Modric was outstanding.

The list of positives is endless, so come on what about some Christmas cheer?
We will finish 3rd, Chelsea will stutter to 4th and Man City will self destruct

Great post. But i understand the complaints about Gomez, i love him as our keeper and yes i know he has the odd moment but as much as i was raging at him yesterday i have calmed down!

Can we all please come to some agreement about not posting quotes from the village idiot? I enjoy reading the posts until someone quotes him and wastes their time answering him.

Agreed. He was excellent.

I forgot to mention this. What about the header from Palacios? He almost scored a brilliant goal. Good save from Gomes as well.

nice try Sweetums.... but you have frequently responded directly to my posts which HAD NOT been quoted back in the thread, before your pathetic little responses... just 1 example of this is your rambling after I took you to task over your rabid'capitalising on every hint of imperfection' of Gomes...

how do you explain this phenomenon.... are you psyxhic as well as beautiful now ??  8)

you must be referring to Bigv namecalling again eg. fool, gimp etc...

thought Defoe was actually our motm before he went off.... his unselfish (Defoe unselfish ??!!) running off the ball into the left-channel especially was great.... shows how the striker who doesnt score can actually play a bigger role overall than the striker who does score...
