January sales
« on: October 09, 2010, 06:05:44 PM »
Who do you think we should be looking to buy/sell in the January window?

Sell - Dos Santos, Keane, Corluka? - I like him but he is sooooo sloooow! O'Hara

Buy - A top striker - as long as it isn't Fabiano - we're not good enough remember!  :tickedoff:
A World class centre back - just in case - as I fear that the talk of Woody's return is a little too premature. :-\

What about you lot - what do you think?

If we get the right offer then I think 'Arry will be looking to offload Bentley, Jenas and unfortunately Keane. I sure that they won't go unless the price is right though as Mr Levy likes to keep the purse strings and balance sheet nice and tight, possibly could see them go out on loan as a option too.

As for signing anyone I'll be very surprised if there are any top class strikers available and if they are they will cost an absolute fortune. It'll all depend on injuries too and who if any (hopefully none) are injured and what kind of cover we have.

Personally I would like to see us sign a LB too to give BAE a bit of competition.

I agree UGS - BAE on form is a top class LB but he does seem to get complacent sometimes and as you say this could be down to lack of competition - especially as I think Arry sees Bale as a LM/LWF now. The question is who do we go for?

I also think we should get another LB as Bale has moved up the field and really wasn't a good defender anyway. As Dawson, King and Gallas all struggle with injuries and fitness (Woodgate is out anyway) it seems that adding another CB is not that bad idea. We should keep Keane, I've said it million times before why I feel so and I won't be doing it this time.

O'Hara has been injured for ages and I'm not sure anyone would want him.

I think most of the players mentioned will be up for grabs but i dont see too many takers for the cash we will be looking for.

I dont think we will be signing anyone expensive anytime soon either. Without any big sales even the CL cash means we will probably break even or make just a small profit this year.

Man Ure and their current plight just shows how hard it is to spend and service debt, it seems to me that Levy (who i think does a great job) is alreay looking ahead to the financing situation once the stadium plans progress and we find ourselves juggling bank accounts.

If we sell then i am sure Harry will get some but not all of any cash to splash

I'd say we keep what we have and only buy if another VDV type "deal" comes to Levy and co's attention i.e. a bargin.

Bentley can go for the right price, but he does offer good depth for the RM slot.

I think getting rid of Dos Santos would be a mistake he has alot of developing to do and could be a real gem, if he can extend his form and ability that he shows for Mexico to us and adapt to the EPL we would benefit greatly, if he doesnt after another season or so we will get back the small amount we paid for him.  Us him more as a striker!

Keane again I would keep he gives us options and has bags of big game experience he is more vaulable to us as a player than the fee we would get especially with the amount of games we have this season.

Corluka, if he goes who else to challenge the scot at RB our developing players are not ready yet, admit Corluka should never play CB for us again.

Jenas a1 squad player we need players like him in our squad if we are going to develope and he has ability when he puts in the effort.

Bentley surplus to requiremenst cant really see a need or future for him.

Cudicini, great to see him back playing after that accident and I am glad to see it didnt wreck his career, but he is not, nor has been the player he was when benched at Chelsea and is no challenge to Gomes, not looking good as cover either move him on with thanks and wish him well.

Woody time to retire he is awesome when fit but his injuries are getting teh better of him and he isnt getting any younger, gutted but thats the facts.

Gallas total pants bye bye!

Crouch not an admirer we become very predictable when he plays in the EPL he is ineffective and takes 15 blown chances before netting, bit more effective in europe but I would like to see him go for a reasonable price.

Buy a true preditor, to kick Defoe up the arse, we wont get one in January, Huntelaar and Fab are a no no full stop, how about Bellamy he would work for us long as he keeps his passion.

A CB dont have a clue who Richards if possible.

Some have suggested a LB to push BAE, I agree as BAE can be top drawer one game and sunday pub league standard the next.

At this point we dont need anymore midfeilders lol
THFC "COYS" and that is all I have to say about that!

It makes no sense to sell one of our best players as we are where we wan't to be with regards to the Champions League and maintaining some league form.

Selling him would be what Tottenham "did" in the past...

If we want to get closer to the title, selling players such as Bale will only hinder those aspriations.

United and Chelsea rarely sell there best players unless its for mega bucks (only Ronaldo £80million springs to mind) Plus United are up sh*t creek financially, and we....well....aren't

selling a player like Bale (when we also have Lennon ion the right, and Modric to go back to LM) will affect the team minimally...

using the 30m+ to get in a super-striker tho will galvanise the team as a whole.... its upfront where we lack the quality, as good as Crouch and Defoe are they arent comparable to the great strikers out there, 1 of which we now need to get to the next level..

1 small step backwards, but followed closely by a LARGE step forward.... net result = gain.

I know what your saying, but if we sell our "less used" "fringe players" e.g. Bentley, O'Hara and maybe Pav/Keane, we could re-coup a decent amount of cash (in region of £20mill) and put that towards a big name striker without selling one of our best performing players.

Thats what i would do..

selling those players you mentioned would take more than 1 month (January) and therefore we could well seriously weaken our chance of getting Top4 again.... once you lose it its hard to get it back unless youre out of Europa League too (as the EL games are numerous, played on Thursdays and will seriously weaken the team battling for a Top4 finish)...

the best way to maximise our chances of Top4 this season again is to swap/p-x Bale for someone like Benzema.... it would balance the striking options instantly at Spurs and also allow Modric to be accomodated into the team regularly (without him being a liability at CM)...

I'd almost guarantee Spurs anothet Top4 if this happened..

Selling fringe players would weaken our chances of making the top 4, this is a stupid statement. Seeing as they are fringe players and make rare appearances this will make no difference too the sides battling abilities. An even more stupid statement is too sell or part ex our best player(2nd best) player to bring in an untried option that will take time to settle right at the time when we need the team to be at its best. If we need to bring in anyone then we need to offload our weaker players first, if you want to progress from the position we are in you don't get rid of your best players !!!!!

Gareth I'm so glad that you have no input into our transfer policies or team selection because very soon we would be battling for the bottom four with Liverpool, not the top four!!!!

as I've suspected for a while now Ugsy, you have trouble understanding written English fully..

I stressed that it would be nigh impossible to sell those players all in January as well as get in a 30m+striker with the time left over before February..

this season is a golden opportunity to retain Top4, if we get a great striker in, and deny Citeh again.... if we do that then the new FIFA rules on transfer-budgets being tied to club revenues will make it much harder for Citeh (and others) to buy their way to the Top4, as they have tried to do...

Spurs get Top4 again this season..... Citeh will not be able to spend 100m+ after this season, to buy their way to success thereafter..

this season will be critical.... if they get Top4 instead, they will consolidate that position for years to come... we will be playing in the enery-sapping, numerous-gamed Europa League played on Thursdays (thus weakening chances of further Top4 finishes) for the next decade...
