Tottenham are title contenders, Says Redknapp

Harry Redknapp believes Tottenham Hotspur have a realistic chance of challenging for the Premier League title this season.

The Spurs manager has added only the Brazilian midfielder Sandro Ranieri to his first-team squad but expects his side to build on last season's fourth place.

"I feel we could contend for the title. We have got the players here," he said. "We have to aim for it. We could win the championship."

"Last year we went in saying we wanted to finish in the top four and if you don't aim for things, you have no chance."

Redknapp, whose Tottenham side play New York Red Bulls in the early hours of tomorrow morning, said he would have to strengthen his squad if they are to make a lasting impression in the Champions League this term.

Spurs are yet to seal a place in the tournament's group stages, with a two-leg qualifier following shortly after their home match with Manchester City on 14 August.

"The Champions League is massive – forget budgets – we just want to be there," Redknapp said. "If we can get into the group stages we can make an impact. We have good players – some fantastic ones at our club. And they can get better.

"We are going to have to rotate at times – we cannot play the best players all the time. I feel that, if we can bring one or two players in, it will make a difference."

Redknapp said he is continuing to look to make high-profile signings despite missing out on Joe Cole, who has joined Liverpool.

"We are disappointed to miss out on Joe Cole because he was a great free transfer and he must have had a better offer from Liverpool.

"I spoke to him a month ago and I thought he was coming here. He wanted to come to Tottenham. He had made his mind up – I had no doubt about that. But a month went by and Liverpool moved in."

I totally agree that are target this season should be to push for the title

Dear God here we go again. I can barely hear myself think over the sound of knives being sharpened. Of course we are going to try and win the title so are Bolton and West Ham etc the thing is they are not shouting it from the rooftops. We had a great season, and with a few additions (who are yet to appear) we should have another one this year, however other teams will also be stronger and in the case of Liverpool and City considerably so. Finishing 4th again will be an achievement in itself. Why on earth did Harry have to say this? I admit he's hardly likely to say we will be happy to avoid relegation but to say we are title contenders before a ball is inflated let alone kicked is a bit ambitious. We Spurs fans suffer enough grief for having delusions of grandeur having the Manager come out and say this just adds fuel to the fire for our detractors. Just for once I'd like the Manager to say " yeah we should do ok this season." Then we go and win the bloody title. He has set the bar to high to soon we will be title contenders in April, if we are lucky, not in August.

It seems that the more we get all hyped up, the more we will fail. We've seen this year after year. I am very superstitious when it gets to boasting about the chances... Players and staff should just shut up and talk about our league position in May.

Well this is what we have to aim for lads. This is what potential new signings will be wanting to hear, after all I believed it was a man named Bill who said that th only way to succeeed is to aim high, and to disagree with him is unthinkable.
"It is better to fail aiming high than to succeed aimin low. And we of Spurs have set our sights very high, so high in fact that even failure will have in it an echo of glory."

I think what 'Arry wants is to make the squad believe they can archive and win the league. They got to 4th place with their own power, without much financial power unlike mancs. So in doing so their confidence might be boosted if they hear their manager believe in them being able to win the league with the same squad. As long as we get those new players for Striker and CB/MC

After last season we scraped 4th with one game to go, which we should of tied up much earlier if you remember there were losses to Wolves, Stoke and Burnley. Also away to Villa when we battered them and only managed a draw, we dropped points in games that we should really of won, if we can convert these to wins then why not !!!
With those extra 10 points alone that would have put us 3rd on 80 points only 6 points behind Chelski, so is it so unrealistic to think that we could actually challenge, I think not. Our squad is on a par with the other top teams in the division and with the obvious talents of 'Arry and his man management skills a little luck and some bad luck in other quarters then it is possible, obviously I know that it's not going to be easy.
It's good to see that 'Arry is saying we could win it, I would rather he comes out with let's try and win it than let's get 40 points and see what happens. Last year 'Arry said we were going for 4th and we got there..... Positive Mental Attitude let's all get it and see how far it can take us it's good to dream because one day your dreams will come true !!!!!!
