It sounds weird, but I'm pleased with the 4th position team being entered into it, obviously my views would probably different if I was a Man Utd fan, or Spurs were finishing 1st or 2nd each season, but we aren't.. :D

As far as I am concerened only league champions should be in a champions league and they should play it as a league structure, perhaps the top two playing a final similar to how rugby is decided. This would keep a high number of games and only the top sides in it. The winner coul justifiably be considered champions of Europe.

2nd-4th place sides (or close as depending on how a country performs for spaces) then enter a UEFA cup which would be higher calibre.

Probably means European football wouldnt come down as far as 6-8th place, but perhaps that would allow a new competition to evolve as well to spread some money about.

Oh and a cup winners cup would be brilliant to have back.
There be dragons

This is a fine idea in theory but look at how many nations are trying to qualify for Euro 2008 if they all put their champions forward you'd have a league with about 50 teams in it. Far better to go back to the old F.A cup style open draw system with no seeding. This of course will never happen the big teams  like it just the way it is and probably would prefer to drop out of the domestic league altogether and form a closed shop of the top 18 or so european sides
