Rafael van der Vaart and Gareth Bale are both doubts for Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Werder Bremen.
Van der Vaart did not train on Tuesday morning after complaining of pain from an ankle knock, and has since undergone a scan on the injury.
Bale is suffering with a shoulder injury picked up in Saturday’s north London derby, but manager Harry Redknapp is optimistic that the Welshman will play.
However, he accepts that Van der Vaart is “struggling”.
Robbie Keane trained following an ankle problem but Niko Kranjcar (calf) and Giovani dos Santos (groin) are still doubts.
Captain Ledley King (groin), Michael Dawson (ligament damage), Jamie O’Hara (back) and Jonathan Woodgate (groin) are long-term absentees.
The Bundesliga side are not just out of form – they have a host of selection problems heading into a game they have to win to stay in the competition. Captain Torsten Frings is suspended, denying them valuable protection in midfield, while defender Mikael Silvestre and striker Marko Arnautovic are also out. Silvestre has a back injury while Arnautovic misses out with a thigh problem, so the German side will have their work cut out to end a run of five defeats from their last six games.
