Window Shopping
« on: December 27, 2014, 08:36:15 AM »
We are about to enter the transfer window, possibly the most important one of recent times. We are currently playing football that is not up to the standard we would like. (although we are starting to show improvements going forward at least), but despite these poor displays, we are still only 5 points off 3rd. But we still have a lot to do.

Yesterday we played the bottom side, a side who had only scored 15 times all season and baring a miracle are destined for the drop. This side managed to have 22 chances against us. We got the 3 points so all is well, but it shows how vulnerable we are.

We all know we need a top striker, Kane is really coming on, but Soldado and Adebayor? Please! However, I think we could wait until the summer. Our focus needs to be stopping these chances from even happening. If we defended better, the attack would then have more freedom and I believe we would also start scoring more goals from midfield.

We need a CB desperately. My shout would be to go all out and try and sign Shawcross, because if we don't one of the other top sides will. He is developing into a quality player and I think he will be England's CB in the future.

Someone on the radio was talking about how they thought that our weakness was in center midfiekd. Bentalab and Mason are not good enough. Mason is coming on, but is he of the quality we need o dominate the center of the park. I think this is why our defence is put under so much pressure and why other teams have as many chances as they do. So we need at least one very good MC. My obvious shout would be Schneiderlin, but I doubt we will get him.

But knowing Levy we will probably get Rio Ferdinand (who is old and past it) and Jedinak (who isn;t awful but not any better than what we have)

Outside shout for a striker boost - would you take Defoe till the end of the season? I would.

Maybe next year...

I don't think Defoe would suit for us as Pochettino tends to use one striker up front and I'm sure we can all agree that this is something Defoe cannot do.

Getting Defoe would be a step backwards.

Don't get me wrong, he is not the player we need in the long term. But I would rather Defoe, who knows the set up and loves the club, over some desperate stab in the dark, from a team struggling in the premiership (Berahino for example). Voice, it wouldn't be a step backwards (unless you meant stepping back to when we were playing good football, lol.) The worst it would be would be stepping sideways. I agree he does not fit MP's system, but he we would never need him to play that role, the other players can do that, Defoe would be the ideal player to bring on when he wasn't working. He is still a poacher and could make a difference.

Anyhow, the striker was a side issue and I would rather have no new striker until the summer, if we can secure two players in areas where we need them more. The striker can wait, the midfield and defence cannot!

I agree with this 100%. It is not always a good idea to buy players in Jan. Generaly you end up with poor buys. It does not necessarily mean that we cannot bolster our midfield IF the right bods are available, but our striker can wait until the summer if it means getting the right player and I don't think our defense needs to be messed with atm, apart from Fazio.  IMO

I think we should get a striker in in January, but maybe on loan with an option to buy. I really cannot see any great options at the market at the moment. But we definitely need another option as Adebayor and Soldado can't be relied on, and Eriksen and Kane can't carry the club on shoulders on their own.

Agreed Rif. We are relying too heavily on Eriksen & Kane, in the same way as we did Bale. What we need to do is move on the players we DON'T need, ie Naughton Cherices Kaboul Lennon Townsend Soldado Adebayor, and spend the money on a CB central midfielder (ie Schneiderlin) winger and 2 strikers. No point in making do as we did when Harry wanted a CB and striker, and it ended up costing us CL football.

I think if we are going to get another striker we need to think long term. Defoe doesn't fit that criteria. From his point of view he would be better going to a club that can give him more football and Spurs won't be able to guarantee that.

9 days and counting..... Still no signs of anyone coming in. Martinez keeps cropping up, but as always question marks over how he will adapt to the prem, considering he seems to be valued at 30 mill plus.
Still nothing happening with Schneiderlin, maybe they want a couple of our players in p/ex?
Aaron Lennon to Everton ? That would make sense, for him and us.
Starting to look like the usual last minute scramble, or maybe nothing at all. Surely we have to try and move on Adebayor & Soldado if we can, as I just cannot see them resurrecting their Spurs careers.

Considering our persistent injury problems I hope we won't be offloading too many players. Yes, we need a striker, but I cannot see any proper ones available, so I guess we will have to put up with Adebayor and Soldado. I actually believe we could be getting some goals from Adebayor, but not so many from Soldado.

Defoe wants to come back and for 3M we should snap him up!, he cant do any worse than Soldado and we all know all he is a proven goal scorer! we would be mad to miss out this bargain deal.

According to Talksport this morning  Spurs will be bidding for Mirallas from Everton and Schneiderlin from Southampton in this window. Don't know if there is any truth in these rumours but I think both players would improve our midfield as long as we can sell those players that Poch doesn't seem to rate or play like Capoue, Lennon and Paulinho etc.

We have a bit too many defensive midfielders, so letting either Capoue or Paulinho leave and bring in a more creative one would be a good call. Although, I'd really would like to see Holtby back at the Lane. Too bad, the club cannot recall him.

I am not sure about letting Paulinho go as he has been doing well lately.
