A question about squad numbers
« on: March 08, 2013, 06:35:33 AM »
I was wondering does anyone know how Holtby can wear number 23 in domestic competitions, but 14 in Europa League? Here's proof http://static.tottenhamhotspur.com//media/images/matchday/spurs-vs-inter-07032013/inter5.jpg and http://static.tottenhamhotspur.com//media/images/matchday/spurs-vs-inter-07032013/inter3.jpg
Is it because Cudicini wore number 23 for us in Europa League this season?

I can only assume Riff that we have to name different squads for the Premier League and Europa Cup, have you also noticed that both numbers add up to 5 and maybe (I don't know) he wanted the number 5 shirt ? Don't know what number he wore at Schalke but maybe it was five and the only way to get 5 on his shirt was to take 23 in the EPL and 14 in Europe ?
(Jermain Defoe wears 18 which adds to 9 !!!)

Ah, didn't see that. Interesting fact. Anyway, it still doesn't explain why a player has two different numbers for the same season.

Holtby wore number 10 for Schalke.

I remember when Inter striker Ivan Zamorano was forced to give his number 9 to Ronaldo and then ended up with 1+8 on his shirt.

I don't know why we can't go back to the old system.
I’ve lived a life that’s full. I’ve travelled each and every highway;
And more, much more than this,
I did it my way.

Regrets, I’ve had a few;
But then again, too few to mention.
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption.

What system is that?
When numbers were assigned by player's position for a particular game, not for the whole season.

In Great Britain persistent squad numbers were introduced in 1993, up to then players in starting XI had to have numbers 1-11 like this:

1 GK

2 RB 4 CB 5 CB 3 LB

6 CM 8 CM 10 AM/CF

7 RW 11 LW

9 ST

Actually if you look at it, numbers are still mostly handed out on somewhat similar basis. At Spurs we have Lennon (RW) with number 7, Bale (LW) with 11, Parker and Huddlestone (CM) with 8 and 6 respectively, Kaboul and Vertonghen (CB) with 4 and 5 respectively, Rose (LB/LW) with 3. We have no 9 since Pavlyuchenko (ST) left, Dempsey (2) is not a RB and Adebayor is out and out ST, not AM/CF.

As far as I am concerned, squad numbers are better than numbers issued at the start of every game. Some players cannot always be immedialtely identified from the back and are recognised from their numbers.
