Great Shame for Spurs
« on: April 13, 2007, 12:36:02 AM »
A long time ago I stated something which was so quickly shot down without a second thought. Martion Jol IS tactically inept. Lets look at todays signs of it.

He played a Right back by trade, and a magnificent one at that, as our left back.
He then employed our CM/LM as our RB where he had never played before.

He had two options with this. He had to mix up the defence a little bit with injuries to 3 key defenders and another being cup tied but he made too changes to the usual defence instead of the one.
Either play Chimbo in his usual right back position and Teemu as left back( He has played LM quite alot recently) or Play Chimbo on the left, where is significantly weaker it must be said, and Young Phil Ifil on the right where he has always played. Maybe Jol felt he was too inexperienced for the job, but surely it is better than playing two players out of position.

He then makes his next mistake. 4-1 down on aggregate, needing 4 goals in 45 minutes to win the tie and he decides to leave JD on the bench. The one man likely to get us a goal back. Eventually after about 60 minutes he brings him on. He brings him on for our best player on the night, the one man that looked like getting a goal and was trying so hard, Didier Zokora. This did not go down well. O what do ya know, JD scores with his first touch. What sort of fool are you, you need four goals bung on your second top scorer you tool.

Spurs fans are regarded as fickle and this is probably why. When things go right for us I love the bloke but it is times like this that his managerial prowess comes into question. It is not the first time this season he has let us down when it matters and I won't be the last. All three Semis/Quarters this season have been lost in a large part by Martin Jol. This is not an overreation but a fact. In each of the three games he has done or not done in some cases something that has got us knocked out.
Ars*nal in the cup, he brings Keane on instead of Mido, then site back and tries to defend our lead. When we go to highbury he plays defensively and doesnt try to get at them.
Chelsea in the FA Cup. He take Berbatov and Lennon off which gave them the momentum. Our two best players taken off.
Seviila in the Uefa. I have already touched on it.
Martin, you are still the man for the job, we all want you here for a long time but take a good look at yourself. These decisions are adding up and something needs to be done. Learn from your mistakes o great one.

This may seem like a very sudued Storts, just after we have been beaten but I can assure you more is too come :D

The games itself. Not much can be said about the first game. We played well but we were harshly treated, on and off the pitch. On the pitch the ref gave a penalty which completely changed the tie. It was never a penalty. How any first class ref can give that is an absolute joke. The ball changed direction dramtically in the direction that Robbo was going, surely that was a clue in itself. In my opinion, that was the moment that lost us the tie. All was so fine and dandy until that moment and we lost heart. Then off the pitch the police beat us with batons for no reason. The players saw one fan be knocked over, blood streaming from their head after being attacked by a police baton. You know what for? For taking a picture of the team bus. Shocking stuff.

On to todays game, well by the time I have finished and posted this it will be yesterday's.  First half to be quite honest we were outclassed. None the less though we have a lot to feel agrieved about. Firstly we had another European ref that played by European rules. In other words as soon as a Spanish player fell on the floor it would be a foul. I really hope Seville don't win the cup. They have talent in abundance within their team but time after time they resort to cheating. The amount of times their players faked injury and conned the referee was unbeliveable.
Fredi Kanoute was offside for their second goal, which killed the tie completely. That was the goal that ended our chances and it is typical that it would be the Tottenham Reject that scored. We were completely off the boil in the first half. The players just weren't up for it, whcih unfortunately spelt the end to our European aspirations for one year at least.
Second half we were much better than them. We should have started like it but didn't. In all honesty we had the chance to do the unthinkable. Berbatov and Dawson both missed sitters to be honest. If one of those had gone in we would of had a good ten minutes at least to push for the all important fourth. Unfortunately it was not too be and we had to settle for Quarter finals in two cups and semi's in the other.

Todays Ratings:

Paul Robinson 8- Could do little about either goal. Kept us in the game at vital stages and showed he was a true yid and several times. Top bloke, one of our only good performers.

Teemu Tainio 5 -Out of his depth at RB, not a good position for him.

Ledley King 7-  Got better as the game progressed. Great to see him back.

Michael Dawson 6- Not one of his better games, not as commading as usual. Maybe because he wasnt our main CB

Chimbo 5- Again, LB is not his position, didn't cope well. Too easily beaten

Aaron Lennon 6- Terrible first half, great second half.

Jermaine Jenas 6- At times did some good passes/tackles at others he was lacklustre

Didier Zokora 8- Great performance again by him. Really looked dangerous, Our only player that ran at people all game.

Steed Malbranque 3- Truely Shocking, terrible own goal, terrible performance

Dimitar Berbatov 6- Not one of his better games, missed a good chance

Robbie Keane- Poor tonight, not very creative.

Subs:

Jermain Defoe 9- Instant impact, looked very sharp, arguably our man of the match.

The Ratings reflect the game as a whole. We started poorly and that was the trend that went on for the whole first half. We didn't turn up until it was too late and that was a great shame. In the next few days I will write up my seasons report on the successes. We know have the relatively comfortable task of securing a Euro spot for nect year. If Man U and Chelski win their semis then 7th is Uefa in the league. However we want 5th. It would secure our position as the 5th best team in England and show that we still are the closest to breaking in to the top 4. We have a squad that is very nearly CL standard. One more striker, A Left Winger, Decent CB cover and a tough midfield maestro would be enough.

So that is our season done and dusted for the most part. We have battled well on four fronts and it has been a breakthrough season for Martin Jol. We did not get the much desired silveware but we have shown that we are more than capable of challenging in the next few years. In every competition we have lost it for ourselves. No one has beaten us majestically. We have made mistakes and we will learn from them. For once I have been rational and not to disheartened after the game. Yes we may have lost today but hopefully this will inspire the players. They will have caught the bug and will want European football next year.
If we get it, you will THFC coming out bigger and stronger when we try to win the trophy. For me all is still rosy at the Lane. We have lost the biggest club game in years but the foundations are set. With MJ at the helm and players like Dimi and Azza at the club we will always have a chance. Lets qualify for Europe and build next year.

I really agree with the comments about Jol. It has happened so many times before, bringing on Defoe with 20 mins left is not the answer.

Even though JJ said after the game the lads were up for it, it was just the nerves at the start. Why Steed was standing outside the post is beyond me. From then on he was s**t. Chimbonda was s**t but he is out of position. Why play Tainio who has played LM for us on the right and put out RB out of position. Better to have one player not two out of position.

Lennon was not in the game first half, nor could be said for most of the game. The fightback was great to see and gave me some confidence, if only Dawse and Berba slotted those chances in and that penalty was never given. It could have been so different.

It was great seeing King return, I hope he has an injury free remainder of the season to secure us European qualification again. Then we can have a good end of season, get some new and talented players in and with Berby, Zokora etc all bedded in we can launch our assault on the cup next season. You all may be disappointed fellow Spurs fans but remember, we went out to last seasons winners, the La Liga challengers and this seaosns likely UEFA Cup winners with a young, inexpireinced and injury plagued side.

This giant has woken.

Great post Storts!  I still believe we will have had a fantastic season if we make it into Europe.  We might only need 7th, but you're right, we should push for 5th

We went out with pride at least... I went home feeling we played gr8 despite the circumstances : CHEATS (Alves diving everywhere) + REF!!!!!!

The crowd though was electric and the team came out early looked intentive after 65mins it was going perfectly... Wed scored 2! But many chances were missed so we didnt manage 2 score more.

I really felt we deservd this win, 1st leg dominated but 4 the refs decision on a penalty - if we would have had that ref @ WHL we would av had about 3 penalties - handballs. I think if the 1st tie was 1-1/2-1 2 us that wud av bn fair...

2nd tie - MALBRANQUE?! It was going WIDE but he hit in!!!! THen Kanoute, yes it was skillful but OFFSIDE... THen we clawed back with 2 goals missed several chances as we dominated in the 2nd half ... again!

We'll learn from this though and next year i feel we will win a cup - but if we dont win something next season, things could go wrong - players will start 2 leave...

The reason 4 our loss: REFEREES!!! and sheer HARD LUCK... We cant blame spurs, they were the better side...

Great Article Storts! Here's some reputation points..

Very good article mate, agree with everything.

The Martin Jol mistakes you pointed out are very true and he does need to learn from them for us to have any chance of becoming a top 4 club in the distant future.

But as you stay, the futures bright, the futures still Lilywhite

Fair points in some aspects, but surely you cant be claiming that because jol played tainio and chimbonda out of position we lost that game?

The game was lost last night because of two individual mistakes, one, obviously malbranque and the other, chimbonda, say what you like it was his, not jols mistake.

We were always up against it from then on and to score 4 goals against the potential champs of spain was never too realistic, though we had the chances.

You can claim he was playing out of position all you like BUT when it comes to a set play like that any defender on half as much money as he is should be able to at least get close to the attacker.

The guy had time to turn, look up, run AND spot kanoute before sliding in that pass and a man of any experience should not allow someone of his obvious class that much time on the bal because you'll be punished.

I'm sure jol is aware of where his players are strong and if he didn't think tainio was capable of playing at right back he wouldnt have put him there.

Defoe did do well when he came on but i wouldn't neccessarily say keane was poor, just didnt get much service and it wasnt the best game berbs ever played, but what an effort at the end of the first half!!

Two penalty decisions went a long way to deciding this tie as a whole, one was the one they got over there and the other was the one we didnt over here, two hands on zokoras shirt making no effort to get to the balll and somehow both the ref and his assistant see nothing!!

How that navarro never got sent ill never know.

Dont need to say anything about the one over there we all know what happened.

Was good to see king play the full game with no signs of any repercutions, that can only stand us in good stead for the rest of the season.

Robbo was class all night, will have done him well to put in that performance in front of mcclaren.

Onwards and upwards for the rest of the season anyway startin with wigan sunday, hopefully the boys will bounce back and get us back on track for 6th, we need uefa next year!!

I agree with everything you said Storts. Nothing much to add is there really but I'll just give my main thoughts anyway?

Whatever MJ said to the team at half time, why wasn't it said BEFORE the game? It's not the first time we've come out looking lacklustre - it's so frustrating. We could have won the match....so many IF ONLYS.

If I was the manager, I would have had Chimbonda in his usual RB and Tainio at LB. PC looks so uncomfortable/unconfident on the left. To be honest, even JJ could have been an option in defence - he's been crap of late in midfield anyway, but he can tackle pretty well so why not?!!

Zokora shouldn't have been subbed. JD should have come on in the first half or at least the beginning of the second.

The ref was s**t (again)! We never cut a break do we? The play acting of Sevilla was a disgrace - why do referees always fall for it? Tainio's red card was ridiculous - ok so he caught his leg...it's a yellow at best. Rolling around in apparent agony is pathetic & cheating.

Anyway, it's water under the bridge now. Let's hope & pray we qualify next year.

Great post storts, completely true!

Why didn't he play Ifil, he's a full back ffs. Zakora never should hae been subbed, he was our only means of attack for most of the game.

Don't get me wrong i think he is a great manager but some times he needs to make more decisions that need to be made rather than wait and see how the match pans out.

Prime example is against Sevilla when he bought JD on with 20 mins to go!

LOL! i wants to be a mod

Jol brought us to within a lasagne of champions league spot last season, and this seson should get us back into uefa cup.  All this without major spending on players, but next season is the biggie.  If we do not get the rght players in during the transfer window it will be just another false dawn.

I really do agree with this article. sum of the points made are very accurate. The 1 that really gets my blood boiling is decsion to take berba nd lennon of against chelsea. i know they may have needed a rest, but im sure they could have lasted another 15-20 minutes. especially lennon as i heard berba was carrying a knock( but he looked fine to me). martin is a great man nd a real character, but is it just me or are sum of these decisions just common sense.
