Martin Jol insists there is no need for Jermain Defoe to leave Tottenham Hotspur.
Defoe has been alternating with Robbie Keane as Dimitar Berbatov's strike partner this season and it has led to speculation he could move on in the summer.
Harry Redknapp has expressed a desire to be reunited with the former West Ham United hit-man at Portsmouth.
But Spurs boss Jol feels Defoe's career is best served at White Hart Lane and that he would not be guaranteed more playing time at another club.
"Here we know how good he is, what he can do and he does it well," Jol told the Daily Star Sunday.
"Leaving and going to a so-called 'big club' can have the opposite effect. He would just be one of many.
"It's a myth I never play Jermain. He has played more league games than Robbie. He has also scored 16 goals - 10 in nine during one spell.
"I can't play all three together and if I was to leave Robbie out after scoring twice against Boro, I would lose my credibility.
The moment Robbie doesn't perform or is injured then - bang - Jermain is in.
"Steve McClaren knows how good he is, so that is another reason he hasn't a need to leave. Jermain is a natural scorer.
"I love him, so do the crowd. He keeps his head down and works hard. He is a manager's dream.
"He accepts what we are trying to do here. I want him to stay and, to his credit, he has never knocked at my door in anger."
