Europa League 2010-11
« on: November 25, 2010, 04:34:09 AM »
So I thought we needed one for the Europa League. Hey, football is football, ain't it? :P

In any case, here's a quick rundown of the twelve groups:

GROUP A - Lech Poznan are surprisingly holding joint top with Man City, while Juventus can't seem to get out of limbo - they have four draws in as many matches :P Salzburg are bottom with two draws and two losses.

GROUP B - Leverkusen and Atletico Madrid are neck and neck at the top, while Aris and Rosenborg are lagging behind somewhat.

GROUP C - it seems Sporting is the only team that stands out in this group. Lille, Levski, and Gent all have a good shot at second place at this point.

GROUP D - Brugge's really the only team struggling in this group, with PAOK and Dinamo Zagreb joint top and Villarreal only a point back.

GROUP E - I don't think anyone could've possibly prediced BATE Barysau even being a contender, forget being top, but here they are, three clear of Dynamo Kyiv. AZ Alkmaar has been rather disappointing, I must say, languishing joint bottom with Sheriff Tiraspol.

GROUP F - It seems Russians are the best teams in Europa right now, with two of three perfect teams being of the Russki persuasion. In this case, it's CSKA Moskva. Sparta Praha sits a somewhat distant second, while Palermo is in third with a measly three. With only two matches left, you know what this means. Yes, CSKA is already in the final 32. Lausanne has managed just a single point thus far - a surprise draw against Sparta.

GROUP G - Group of Blah. :P The other perfect Russian side, Zenit Peterburg, leads this group quite considerably, and yes, they are already through - hell, they've outright clinched top in the group! Anderlecht, AEK, and Hajduk Split are left to battle it out for second.

GROUP H - The third perfect team and only non-Russian one leads this group - VfB Stuttgart. Young Boys have a one-win advantage on Getafe and Odense.

GROUP I - PSV (with Atiba Hutchinson :D ) is leading this group with an unbeaten record, although Sampdoria did force a draw with them on opening day. Speaking of the Genovese team, they are two behind Metallist Kharkiv for second. Debrecen can't buy a break, having lost all four thus far. :P

GROUP J - Another team that can't buy a break? Karpaty L'viv. Sevilla and PSG are battling it out for top while Dortmund's a little bit behind.

GROUP K - who knows where this one will end up? Liverpool is currently top by three over Steaua, but their inability to win on the road may bite them in the arse. Steaua has their own problems, though, being only two shy of both Napoli and Utrecht.

GROUP L - Porto is going through, since neither Rapid Wien nor CSKA Sofia can catch them. So what if Besiktas can? The worst Porto can finish is second.

Confirmed going through: BATE Barysau, CSKA Moskva, Zenit Peterburg, VfB Stuttgart, FC Porto

Confirmed going home: Debreceni VSC, Karpaty L'viv

Update:

Group A - Juventus with another draw. Man City beats Red Bull Salzburg to confirm their ascension to the next round. Juve has to win by two against Man City, and Lech has to lose to Salzburg, for Juve to be able to go on to the next round. Speaking of Salzburg, they're going home regardless of result.

Group B - Aris stunned Atletico at home and Leverkusen won, meaning Leverkusen clinches top of the group and Atletico has to beat them to have a chance because of head-to-head. (They're even in the points). Oh, and Rosenborg is officially hooped.

Group C - And Sporting is now officially going onto the next round. Gent took the upper hand by beating Levski, but they still have to beat Lille to move on. Levski cannot possibly qualify, regardless of mathematical possibility, because it isn't like both Gent and Lille can lose when they're playing each other. If it's a draw, Gent gets the point, they go on. If Gent wins... well duh. :P If Lille wins, they move on. Levski can only max out at 7. They're screwed.

Group D - After a draw against PAOK, we do know that Brugge is going home. Villarreal are top and there seems little chance if any of them being knocked out, since the last match is between PAOK and Dinamo Zagreb. Matter of fact I think Villarreal is officially through because of that exact fact. Their last match, by the way, is against Brugge.

Group E - the first "finished" group even though they have a match left. This is because Dynamo Kyiv drilled BATE 4-1 on their own turf to go six clear of Sheriff Tiraspol and AZ Alkmaar, who drew 1-1. That's kinda sad... a team from the Netherlands not able to beat one from Moldova  Anyway, both of the teams in that draw are going home.

Group F - A draw was all it took. Sparta are moving on to the knockout stages, joining still-perfect CSKA after a 2-2 draw against 3rd-place Palermo, who could have pulled to within a point with a win and probably moved on, given how their last match was against sad-sack Lausanne, who got murdered 5-1 by CSKA.

Group G - Zenit is also still perfect after a convincing 3-1 win over Anderlecht, but AEK is the real story of this round of matches as they took the driver's seat in the battle for the other spot with a 3-1 win of their own, against Hajduk Split, which eliminated the losing side. Now with AEK's last match against Zenit, Anderlecht seems likely to get the spot, as they play Hajduk. But guess who Hajduk's lone win was against? Anything less than a win and Anderlecht goes home. Plus there's always the possibility of AEK beating Zenit. :P

Group H - Well well well, who would have predicted a Young Boys win over Stuttgart? The Germans are of course still top, but given OB and Getafe's lack of that extra little push (they drew), this means that Young Boys are joining the Germans in the next round.

Group I - as retaliation for the only point droppage they've had being on their own turf, PSV gutted out a 2-1 win against the same Sampdoria team responsible for the 1-1 draw on opening day, eliminating them from competition. Of course, had Metallist not defeated sad-sack Debrecen, it wouldn't quite have been elimination, would it? ;)

Group J - If one were going just by numbers, we'd say it was a three-way fight. However, since Sevilla and Dortmund play each other and both are behind PSG in the points (PSG has 11, Sevilla 9, and Dortmund 8) the battle is for second, especially with the Parisians playing against Karpaty L'viv, who got thumped 3-0 by Dortmund in their last match. So PSG is on.

Group K - blah. This group is le boring. Only three of the ten matches played so far have been definitive winner-loser results, meaning that everyone is still in the running. Liverpool wraps up at home against Utrecht, and they've yet to drop points at home, so this is a good sign that they're probably going on. The other match isn't quite so set in stone. Steaua and Napoli drew 3-3 last time they met, in Bucharest. Let's see what happens in the shadow of Vesuvius.

Group L - Well, what could have pulled CSKA Sofia to within a point instead ended up eliminating them, as they lost 2-1 to Besiktas. As for Rapid Wien, the win by the Turkish side also eliminated them, but they went and lost anyway against Porto. :P

Who's qualified? Man City (A), Bayer Leverkusen (B), SC Portugal (C), Villarreal (D), Dynamo Kyiv and BATE Barysau (E), CSKA Moskva and Sparta Praha (F), Zenit Peterburg (G), VfB Stuttgart and BSC Young Boys (H), PSV Eindhoven and Metallist Kharkiv (I), Paris St.-Germain (J), FC Porto and Besiktas (L).

Time for a rundown:

Group A - Well, Juve is going home after a sixth consecutive draw in Europa play, 1-1 against Man City.  As if that weren't enough, Lech saw Salzburg off with a 1-0 victory, and join Man City moving on.

Group B - One goal could have made a huge difference for Atletico Madrid. Their match against Leverkusen ended a draw, which wouldn't have mattered so much had Aris not beaten Rosenborg 2-0. So the holders are outski!

Group C - How can one win and still finish dead last? Ask Levski. Lille flattened Gent 3-0 today to grab hold of the promotion spot aside Sporting, who lost a surprising 1-0 loss against the Bulgarian side. Still, they finished a single point behind Lille and even in points with Gent, finishing last by having scored fewer goals.

Group D - Well, Villarreal ended top of the group with a 2-1 win over Brugge. The real focus, though, was on the other match, Dinamo Zagreb against PAOK, which the Greek visitors won 1-0 to move onto the next round. They had to lose to drop out - a draw would have also seen PAOK through.

Group E - For AZ Alkmaar it was a case of too little too late. Sure, they beat the tar out of BATE Barysau, 3-0, but BATE were already on. Also, Dynamo Kyiv drew Sheriff Tiraspol scoreless to end their group stage.

Group F - CSKA Moskva's perfect streak came to a surprise end in the last game of the group, with Sparta Praha gutting out a 1-1 draw against them. Not that it mattered. Even if they had lost and CSKA kept their perfect record, Sparta would still have moved on because Palermo was too far behind - even their win against Lausanne only got them to two points back!

Group G - Zenit not only kept their perfect record, they piledrove AEK badly enough (3-0) that Anderlecht's 2-0 win over Hajduk was more than sufficient to get them to the next round on goal differential.

Group H - We already knew that OB and Getafe were playing for pride, but the two teams got two very different results. Getafe actually beat Young Boys, while OB got obliterated 5-1 by Stuttgart. I guess Getafe is left to wonder what could have been, had they defeated OB instead of drawing them.

Group I - Nothing really to see here except the fact that Debrecen ended their campaign by surprising Sampdoria 2-0 for their only win of this stage of the tournament. :P We already knew Metallist and PSV (who drew) were on the up.

Group J - The battle for second ended a 2-2 draw, with Dortmund unable to grab the needed winner after equalising 4 minutes into the second half. Sevilla would have to heave a huge sigh of relief at this fact - the extra point they had proved the difference in the end. PSG would settle for a disappointing 1-1 draw against Karpaty, but they were already on.

Group K - Only four matches out of twelve in this group were definitive results, and the fourth of these four was the most important. Had Napoli managed but a draw against Steaua, they'd've finished at least joint bottom. But they won instead. Liverpool and Utrecht managed a boring scoreless draw, so Utrecht goes home with five draws and a loss.

Group L - This group was clearly divided between haves and have-nots. Both Besiktas and Porto won their matches (against CSKA Sofia and Rapid Wien) by two, and are moving on.

tl;dr:

Group Winners: Man City, Leverkusen, Sporting, Villarreal, Dynamo Kyiv, CSKA Moskva, Zenit Peterburg, VfB Stuttgart, PSV, PSG, Liverpool, Porto

Group Runners-Up: Lech, Aris, Lille, PAOK, BATE Barysau, Sparta Praha, Anderlecht, Young Boys, Metallist, Sevilla, Napoli, Besiktas

These 24 plus the 8 dropping down from Champions League are drawn into 16 matchups tomorrow at Noon GMT.
