Over the last 3 seasons I believe Tottenham Hotspur having been making the biggest strides forward in the Premier league.
The board came in and Daniel Levy has assembled a fantastic structure in keeping with the ambitions and traditions of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club.
Damien Comolli joined us in September 2005 as sporting director, with overall responsibility for the medical, academy, and scouting for club, replacing Frank Arnesen who of course signed for Chelsea. Manager Martin Jol and assistant Chris Hughton have worked together since tirelessly since Martin came over in the summer of 2004, Martin of course working closely with then Tottenham manager Jacques Santini. As we all know Santini soon resigned and Martin was made Head Coach of this fabulous club and we haven’t looked back since!
Before names such as Levy, Comolli and Jol, Spurs were often named as sleeping giants having not won a single trophy since 1999’s Worthington Cup success, and before that the 1991 F.A. Cup. Our recent league positions were nothing sort of mid table mediocrity for the last 15 years! The odd good cup run would come and go, we would be no where near European Qualification in the league, season after season would pass us bye, players would come and go, but spurs remained mid-table. Much to the annoyance of the fans! We deserved our glory days back.
Since the summer of 2004, things have been a little different down at the Lane. New and exciting times are on the horizon. The signings of players such as Robbie Keane, Jermaine Defoe, and Paul Robinson gave us a great basis to build upon. More recently the signatures of Michael Dawson, Aaron Lennon and of course Dimitar Berbatov have propelled this great club back up the league table and back into Europe (Where we belong I might add) All the while, keeping an English backbone to the team.
It has been down to the fantastic work of the names I mentioned earlier, Daniel Levy, Damien Comolli and Martin Jol who by working together have attracted this caliber of player to our club and made these signings possible. Without Levy, Comolli and Jol we can safely say Spurs would not be where we find out selves at this point in time. These men clearly live and breathe Tottenham Hotspur Long may they and it continue.
You may feel that teams such as Chelsea have been making the biggest steps recently with the arrival of Roman Abramovich and his spending power. His money seems endless and they can probably buy who they like, and usually do, with little or no competition.
To me, that isn’t living and breathing football, that’s just a very wealthy man “having some fun with his toys.” As soon as Abramovich gets bored, he’ll be off, mark my words! At Spurs, the bored have set up a stable basis for this club to improve season on season and under the guidance of Martin Jol we are doing that all the while moving in the right direction.
In the last 3 years, under Martin Jol the team has come on leaps and bounds, finishing 9th, 5th and 5th again respectively. Qualification for the UEFA Cup was guaranteed via the League in two successive seasons for the first time in many years, and to say we only just missed out on a Champions League spot in 2006 is an achievement in its self. This season the team reached the Quarter Finals of the FA Cup and UEFA Cup, and the Semi Finals of the League Cup, which is a massive achievement by the coaching and playing staff alike.
With this continued high level of management guidance by the bored and coaching staff, Tottenham are on the road to success, its been such a long time since we have been able to think, never mind say such good things about Tottenham. Long may it continue.
