Jol: We want to win something

Martin Jol admits winning a trophy is the only way to satisfy the demands of Tottenham Hotspur.

Though Spurs have been unable to challenge for UEFA Champions League qualification like last season, the club have enjoyed lengthy runs in the cup competitions this term.

Spurs reached the semi-finals of the Carling Cup, and also advanced to the quarter-finals of the Uefa Cup and FA Cup.

But Jol accepts that, while some clubs would consider those achievements to amount to a successful season, it is not the case at White Hart Lane.

"First we wanted to compete, to be in Europe and now we want to have the structure for Europe, and that is something hopefully for this year or the year after," said Jol.

"At any other club, if you play two quarter-finals and a semi-final in a season they would be satisfied.

"Here they want to win something. I know that and can live with that.

"The whole fanbase and the board. They can tell me whatever they like and say we did well, but you can see it in their eyes that there is one big thing - we want to win something."

It's been along time waiting for a trophy, but I think one is just around the corner. We've made big strides since Jol took charge, and I believe he's the man to bring the glory back to the lane.

I Love Jol..

You are right, he has taken massive strides since taking over, if we can get a couple of good signings in the summer, then I think we can push for a top 4 spot, hopefully with Ars*nal going the other way!! :)

Absolutely if we hang on to our big players and get a couple of quality signings in the summer we have the makings of a very good team. There's no reason to think that a major trophy is beyond our reach next season hope springs eternal as they say.

We're definitely heading in the right direction, provided we can qualify for Europe next season.  Let's face it, the current team is the best bunch of lads we've had in a long long time. I wouldn't want it to change toooo much but a couple of world class signings would make a massive difference.

I would love to see us step up to top four, but we all know the problems 1 - Leaking too many goals 2 - No left side. If we get a decent left footed midfielder for the left side, and get everyone tracking back we can be top four.

The problem is if we want to attract the REAL big names that will make that difference then we're going to be struggling without champions league footy.

Realisticly i think we should focus most of our attention on a new left sided player this summer.

In defence we've so much cover now that king is back.

Lets face it, its not gonna get any worse than it has been this year again.

Once the guys get time to adapt to each other at the back again we'll be sorted.

I dont think throwing another player into the frame would be a good step, it would just be another question to ask

Defenders aren't good enough, the cover isn't good enough, players in the midfield need to control the game more, we need someone that can really hit the ball like Riise or Alonso for the Scouse, Tainio and Huddlestone could do this with practice, a better understanding between Berbatov and his strike partner would be more helpful, Lennon needs too communicate to.

Then we can start winning trophies, although a League Cup might not be far off.

how can you say our defenders arent good enough when our first regular two are constantly in and around the england squad, our first back up managed to mark RVN out of a crucial CL match not so long ago and our second back up has also been in the england squad before?

They obviously have the talent to be there.

I agree consistency is an issue butour major problem IS the left hand side of the pitch

We also have a problem with tracking back,  our defence always looks dodgy when we are pinned back into our own half.  Iknow that we have been unlucky with injuries, but there does seem to be a lack of confidence at the back.

If we are to progress in Europe we will need a couple more top class players, they will only come if we can secure champions league spot.  To do that we need to be solid at the back, and more creative going forward.

I think c/l - top 4 finish is a few seasons away yet.We need more experience at uefa level and more consitent finishes in p/l plus a few domestic trophys(F.A. cup anyone ).

I think the potential is there, and I have genuine hope for next season that we can cause trouble to the ''Big 4'',but let's face it,we say that at the end of every season.I think that we must qualify for UEFA this year otherwise I think we could see big names walk, plus we won't be able to attract big names to join either.I think the main reason we have failed to make it to any of this seasons finals is the general naivety of the team and inexperience,if we cut out the stupid mistakes and shore up our creaky defence,we will be dangerous next season without a doubt and could hopefully get that elusive silverware.

Yes Jol so do I, so its about time you stop giving away good leads against the big teams e.g. Chelsea 3-1, Ars*nal 2-0 and Seville 1-0 ( even if the ref was to blame kinda ). We are getting close though and I can see us picking up a trophy next year if we buy the right players in the summer.
