Smoke and Mirrors
« on: January 08, 2011, 12:14:59 PM »
So far the transfer window has been open for 8 days and all we seem to have done is discussed an over hyped has been that rides round amongst the media circus created by his wife. Is that really the most important thing that we need as a club what about a Left Back as cover for BAE or a top quality striker to play alongside Van der Vaart. It was reported a couple of weeks ago that Mr Levy had told 'Arry to go out and buy 'big' too help us challenge for the Premier League and Champions League, so far all we seem to have done is become the biggest joke chasing an overrated hasbeen!!

Don't get me wrong as far as I'm concerned 'Arry should be Knighted tomorrow for the miracles he has performed in the last couple of years..... but I really can't see this one. We are chasing Beckham a 35 year old highly overrated midfielder. I know some people think Beckham is a world class footballer but when the pressure was really on against a quality side I can't ever remember Mr Beckham actually delivering. Never ever done it in a World Cup, when the going got tough in the Champions League he disappeared (in fact it was an ex Spur in Sheringham that won that game for them), cost us a world cup place by kicking out and getting sent off in fact as soon as he has come up against any quality he has been found out. He has made his career by doing well against mediocre and poor sides, is that the kind of player that our team needs now especially as we are pushing to be one of the best sides in Europe.

I just hope that we are not being treated to the Beckham circus to hide the fact that we are not going to be signing the players that we really want and more importantly need. We have had 8 days of the transfer window and I would of hoped that we would of at least have been linked and admitted that we are talking to some quality players but all that we keep getting is Beckham, Beckham, Beckham !!!
We seem to be talking the talk but I don't see us walking the walk at the moment and to be honest I'm worried that if we don't grab the opportunity now we might miss the bus, and the worrying thing is this could be the last bus !!!

I see things totally the other way 'round.

Khumalo - done.

Pienaar. SUAREZ...and oh yeah, Beckham. All equally legitimate at this point.

I don't feel the same urgency regarding the LB position. Redknapp regards BAE as the 2nd best player at his position in the premiership behind Ashley Cole. And for cover we've got that Bale guy - possibly the best at the position on the planet. Think about what you've just said. In the last week we've brought in a defender who captained his 3-peat champion former club, all but signed a proven Premier League midfielder, legitimately linked with a striker who scored 49 goals last season and helped lead his country to the World Cup semifinals AND nearly finalized a short-term loan with the most famous footballer in the world (a move certain to improve our international visibility and clout). IN 8 DAYS !!!

I certainly don't think the lack of paper talk about us is a bad thing. Maybe the Beckham freakshow is even a welcome distraction from us being linked to 9 out of 10 players in the world who have played in the last 40 years. It seems that our major signings have taken place recently without much notice ahead of time. Keane, Defoe, Pavlyuchenko, Van der vaart, Palacios, etc. all seemed to happen with only a few days of serious speculation in the papers. My memory isn't fantastic and  I may be wrong on the Keane one there, but I don't remember being seriously linked with even him until a day or two within him coming back.

Imagine if we sign Suarez in a few weeks and you don't hear about it until the day of. I'd call that the right way to go about it. It has been said other than what HR said recently though that the emphasis is on moving along players this window rather than signing them. If we manage to sell some of the players we all know need to move on in this window and don't sign anyone else I'd consider that a success.

Khumalo was done months ago and probably won't get a game if Dawson, Kaboul and Gallas stay fit.
Pienaar and Suarez the amount of Newspaper inches devoted to them is next to nothing and neither deal has been done!!!!
Bale is not a LB his defending is poor and to be fair he is now a marauding left sided midfielder in the young Giggs mould you are deluding yourself if you think we are covered at LB
The only thing that is being talked up at the moment is Beckham who you say is certain to improve our international visibility and clout, beating Inter Milan gave us more clout, finishing top of our champions League group gave us more clout, If we were signing Messi, Kaka or Ronaldo that would give us more clout.
Signing Beckham will it help our goal difference, ability to attack at pace, defend better................ er no !!!
Will it make us a laughing stock .......probably !!!!

The world has truly gone mad if we think that Mr Beckham coming to us is going to make us all shiny and brilliant

Why should we tell every other CLUB WHO WE ARE INTERESTED IN!!!By doing that we stand the chance of getting GUZZUMPED!!!Harry has his OWN way of doing things, and up to now he has managed to pull off some REALLY GOOD DEALS from under the noses of the opposition, so I for one think LEAVE IT TO 'ARRY he aint done too bad up til now!!!!!!!!!!!

The point I was making is that we are barely over a week into the transfer window and are already creating quite a buzz. Relax -- we may yet come up with a couple of winners. @Finch you are right. These things seem to take place in the 11th hour and go in a direction we didn't expect.

Becks is a little past it admittedly and I was glad when I heard he was only training with us. The man can strike a ball though and if we had him to come on with ten to go, he could do a job and be a match winner if we managed to win a free kick 25-30 yards out.

Winning freekicks is something Lennon should be doing a lot more of incedentally. (That and learning to cross/shoot! Am I wrong? Seriously, he seems incapable of getting a clean stike on a ball) He terrifies defenders (even though they know he always goes inside just like Waddle used to always go outside). He's always got the beating of any defender in the league. Untill he gets an end product to his game, I'd rather have Shaun Wright Philips instead who has everything and is vastly underestimated.
