heart says we are capable of beating them, head says we will capitulate. Dont know what it is about them or red nose but no other team seems to carve out victories like them. They are unbeaten yet only edge alot of games slightly. I know they have got a 12th man in howard webb but he doesnt play every game 8D

I think Arry might well drop Varrt for this game, after the fiasco of Everton game... or they will just play a very highline against us and it will be Everton and Wet Spam all over again...

Defoe and Hutch pairing will keep their backline back and allow us the space IN THEIR HALF to play our natural game...

we play Vaart on Sunday...... we lose.

true we lose so many games when our top scoring player plays. Work out the logic on that one folks.... ::)

my comment was really meant for 1-2 who 'got it' from the Everton game... the reasons are there but its not for everyone to understand... Didnt Varrt also score against Everton ??.... and didnt we still have a problem breaking out of our own half for sustained periods ??

just enjoy the game on Sunday... theres a good chap..

Anyone read about Bale and if he is ok?

I can really see us taking the game to them, they look shaky away from home but as bigv says they always seem to grind something out particularly against us.

A lot more positive about this game than usual and i get the feeling VDV may well bag a nice brace to help get us back in the race.

i dont want to understand your logic old pal, as to do so would require years of training in mental impairments and their effects on society.
I have other interests you see. Maybe a relative or kid on the windowlicker bus can aid you on that one.
Back on topic. You mention vdv as having played in the defeat to everton as if he is to blame. He is one of our best players, top scorer and will not guarantee victory no player can do so except howard webb. Your reasoning is unjustified and illogical old bean.
As someone who seems to know arrys next move and be on the pulse of behind doors going ons why dont you just drop vdv and play jenas wherever you like. balls deep in your posterior not included in the latter of course

lol.... and when did I mentioned that 1 player eg. Vaart led to the loss ??

I merely stated the obvious, that having Vaart without the type of player to be a lone-striker effectively, then you will continue to play mostly in your own half, be under constant pressure and not be able to break out for sustained periods...

but as you no doubt will remain a Spurs fan for longer than I probably will, then I really do hope you get your wish and Vaart plays on Sunday.... presumeably just behind that other knee-jerk Defoe the great lone-striker.... after all he did score 2 against the mighty Charlton..

should be an 'entertaining' game for the neutrals  :ohyeah:

'we play Vaart... we lose' is for the Utd game.... as the formation adopted (without the required personnel to play it) will almost certainly bring about that conclusion..

thats not to say that Vaart isnt a very good player, that will be very handy WITH the correct player as the lone-striker ahead of him...

I look forward to seeing Vaart once we acquire the correct striker to play him with..

i have a feeling, call it a hunch if you will, that vdv due to his talent and performances every game (injury permitting) will be one of the first names on the team sheet or any other prem team for that matter contrary to your inflammatory remarks aimed at inciting heated response from loyal supporters willing to defend the integrity of their star players.

Title: Re: Tottenham v Manchester United
Post by: Gareth Keown on January 11, 2011, 03:20:08 PM
I can't think of any other team in the Top12 in the Prem who wouldnt be able to accommodate Vaart successfully (for the team).... they all have at least 1 striker who combine pace, power, height and basic footballing technique, to enable Vaart to play in 'the hole'...

Spurs STILL dont have such a player.

1-4........ with the obligatory tap-in, 2yd header or penalty by Vaart no doubt, to show what a great player he is for ANY Spurs team, regardless of other players alongside...

Back to Defoe leading our attack with VdV taking the Sheringham role which works well for us.

Over recent seasons I have never known our results to suck so much against 1 team as they do Utd, this match we will win and break Utds unbeaten run, we have the talent and ability now lets see it come together!

Arry dont ya dare start with Crouch if you do we will lose for sure as no fecking chances will be put away!

We will win this one Defoe to score and VDV!

Funny enough the key to beating MancU is not VDV but Defoe and an on form Lennon. Lennon keeps Evra in his own half by running past him without fear, while Defoe keeps the midfield open for Godric to play with the threat of his pace behind the CB's.
The fact we had no pace in attack against Everton allowed them to close the midfield and stop us in our own half (plus they took every oppotunity to kick GB up in the air).

finally..... someone who understands football...

I agree that Defoe can be used better than Crouch to try and keep their back4 from advancing.... but he is too small to play this role well, as he will be up against 2 strapping 6ft+ CBs with pace..... they will still try to advance, as they know that Defoe cannot play this lone-striker role well enough due to his small size...

ideally, for this match, we should deploy 2 strikers in a 4-4-2 with good movement, to occupu the channels between CBs and FBs, as well as dropping deep to help the midfield... this will give us the greatest chance to CREATE THAT SPACE in the midfield to mount attacks well.... a la the Chavski game...

play Vaart in a 4-5-1 and I think Citeh will be 9pts clear of Spurs by next Monday...

go on then tactical jenius give us your starting 11.

Title: Re: Tottenham v Manchester United
Post by: ugs on January 11, 2011, 08:31:50 PM
I'll wager a hefty amount on our starting line being

                  Gomes

Corluka     Gallas    Dawson   BAE

Lennon     Jenas     Modric    Bale

              Van der Vaart

                   Defoe

I would like to see Palacious instead of Jenas but I think 'Arry will play Jenas for his box to box abilities, I think Corluka will get the nod over Hutton due to his better defensive capabilities. As for the notion of Van der Vaart not being picked, your a fool Keown, arguably the best player in the Premier League and at least in the top 5 if you want to argue it.
This will be a serious test for the side and everyone will have to be at the top of their game in order to combat Uniteds ability to force a result from seemily unpredictable circumstances, the key for us is simple convert the chances we make. Sounds stupid but if we actually converted 1 in every 3 chances we make we'd be long gone at the top of the table, we need to be clinical and ruthless end of !!!!

id agree but feel he may opt for palacious to shore things up in the middle and break up play. If he gets booked early he may be sacrificied for jenas. Our left side of bale and bae will be key to our success based on how they push forward and also how they deal with nani.  If we get off to a good start and dont concede early we may do well.
anyone know the referee for this fixture??

I think he'll start with Jenas as Ferdinand seems to be having some mobility problems lately with his back and with Modric, Van der Vaart, Defoe and Jenas all coming through the middle I think we might just be able to overpower their CB's. The problem then is we have have to convert the chances that will occur which means alot rides on Defoe and Van der Vaart as a first line of attack and Jenas, Bale and Lennon arriving in the box late as a second wave.

I also hope Palacios plays instead of Jenas, He's much better at breaking up the play - hopefully he can keep out the ref's book too.
I'd keep the same back 4 that played agaisnt Everton. If Bale isn't fit for United maybe VDV on the left and Pav and Defoe up top

Rather see Pav start if that is the case, anyone got any news on Bales fitness??

Also who is the ref we really could do with not playing against 12 men on the day, either way we are coming out 2-1 winners on this one!
Title: Re: Tottenham v Manchester United

Not sure who the ref is but we can be assured of getting nothing from him or his assistants. 23 offsides against Defoe (mostly correct as he is murder for going too soon) especially any borderline ones where we score.

I would prefer to see Pal instead of Jenas although they are both prone to a suicidal sideways pass on the half way line.

Think that Hutton will get the nod over Curluka, even though he cant always defend very well his pace may be needed if Nani is on that wing or even if he is against the surprisingly still good Giggs.

Jenas is not fully-recovered from injury so won't start the game.

Chore Luka will be strictly backup for Hutton.

King should now be left out of the 25-man list..... Bassong as backup to Kaboul (our best defender) for leftside CB..

Defoe and Hutch should play on Sunday...... Defoe and Vaart WILL play on Sunday... (Arry likes to appease the crowd)...

INTERESTING POINT  -   if Bale is injured, I'd lpve to see our other talented, pacy, young left-footer who can score goals...... Andros Townsend..

Its time....its Super Pav time!

Imo he has to start Sunday in a 4-4-2 with JD along side him.

I really cant understand why Harry is not giving him more game time...the lad never lets us down when he plays.

He's a big game player!!

Look at the goals he has scored for us.....he scored the winner against an undefeated Liverpool team a while back.....goal against Fulham in a quarter-final replay.....the 2nd against Twente away(massive goal for us that was)...then another 2 against same team at home and the decisive third goal against Inter.

Harry has to start playing him more often...he will get goals...he has been doing it his whole career.

Just f**king play him Harry :tickedoff:

Pav comes across a little lazy and  uninterested I feel at times and I think this may count against him. Also he shoots from where ever which has it's advantages but 9 times from 10 they don't go in.
Having said that Defoe is probably the most greediest striker I can think of and it's no a bad thing to be when your a striker.
If Pav was more enthusiastic on the pitch I.e chasing down the ball and willing to run further as well as bust a gut for the team I reckon he would be a definite for the game. Like i said I think he need to be more aggressive and more up for it come game time

Its a fact that 'Arry doesn't fancy Charlie at RB so Hutt is first on the sheet. Pav has no idea what a 'channel' is so Defoe next up. Assuming all fit the only coin toss is Wilson/JJ. This is how I see this game going:-
Defoe stretching the pitch wit threat over the top,VDV dropping between lines hopefully dragging CB with him.
Bale forcing Nani to double with RB, Lennon moving Evra inside and long. Godric dropping into space and feeding BAE and Hutton into big wideopen spaces which is where we win the game from!
COYS
Looking forward to this one boys my last trip up was 1-4 reverse against Thescum, DOH!

Thats why we play Pav...i would stick Pav up against Vidic and Rio and let Defoe run across the line and down the channels..we all know Defoe is not that type of player(he likes the ball over the top..something to run onto to)but i think he would be good at it if he was encouarged to play a bit wider...he has the pace and a bit of skill to play that role..im not saying he should do that all the time but he should do it more often...the way Keane plays it sometimes.

Po-Fa...... I like your thinking and I agree with most..

as long as Hutch just occupies at least 1 CB fairly deep, I iz a happy demigod.... Defoe is excellent at working the left-channel especially (watched both 1st-halves of Citeh home game last season and Chelsea home game this season)... the guy is phenom at bursting wide into space to receive the ball (as Bale drags the FB to the touchline wide)...and get this... in the Chavski game BOTH Hutch and Defoe worked hard to support the CMs when we lost possession, and it worked a treat..

if Arry has the rocks to play 4-4-2 sans Vaart, with Defoe & Hutch upfront, like the recent Chavski game, we can do the Manc over-achievers... otherwise, its gonna be bizz as yoosh...

make it happen Arry, you tax-dodging, freaky-faced beauty you...

Manchester United welcome back Wayne Rooney and Nemanja Vidic after the pair sat out the FA Cup win over Liverpool.

look guys if we turn up for the fight as well as the football, we will win, but we must earn the right to play our game, win the midfield, pressure thier defence, dont let them out easy, and start to get our fluid attacks moving nicely, it wont be easy, they always raise their game against us, but our team can win, if they are willing to fight for every ball, manure will not be easy, but they certainly are beatable.

Imo, it can work, all it means is that vdv has to drop off less and play more of a 442.

I hear to many people say Keane and Defoe didn't work, which is crap.

The 2 seasons before Berbatov came, and we nearly finished 4th both seasons under Jol, Keane and Defoe was our main 2 strikers and they did well.

so there nothing that suggest that  vdv and Defoe can't work.

the only thing going against them is that they haven't play alot together

1) the season before Berbatov came when we finished just outside Top4 due to Lasagnegate, it was a chap called Mido was the primary striker.... Defoe and mainly Keano played alongside him.... Defoe-Keano hardly ever featured unless Mido was unavailable (mainly African Nations Cup period)..

2) and the season before that, there was a chap called Kanoute who played a similar primary role to Mido..... with Keano n Defoe alternating again..

I'm quite surprised at you not remembering.... you being a Spurs supporter and all..

back to today..... hopefully we go more 4-2-3-1.... Bale n Lennon better step inside it more today...

"You" ? So much for "we", eh? You realize that the Crouch-VDV combo has accounted for the majority of Rafa's goals right? Crouch has 6 assists - everyone of them to VDV. Ask the opposition how they feel about the pairing. Van admittedly loves playing with Crouch - and we know very little about a pairing with Defoe because of the long layoff.

not sure that changes the fact that when he was at Spurs the 1st time around, he was an auto-starter...

think we sold him cos he had problems controlling his ballooning weight.... and the little matter of a chap called Berbatov arriving..

in the last 5yrs, Keane-Defoe have NEVER been the 1st-choice strikeforce.... not under Jol, Ramos or Arry...

Gareth you really are talking nonsense.

In the season where we missed out on 4th on the last game of season, with the whole flu gate.

When Carrick played CM

Defoe and Keane played up front together plenty of times, just look it up

Just by a quick look last 5 games of that season Defoe and Keane played upfront together, they started at least 10 games upfront together and thats not even including cup games or games where they both finished on the pitch

Wow, people still bother to reply to Gareth on here. What is the point in discussing anything with Mr Irrelevent or indeed what is the point in Gareth at all?

Back to todays game, thought we played alright but both defences clearly played well. Modric was class as usual and a good shift from a lot of other players as well. No coincidence that upon his return we have managed a couple of clean sheets so well done Daws.

If only the big giraffe had stuck that one away about the 15th minute from Huttons cross(?). What really annoys me is when Crouch misses he always has some stupid grin on his face like he is almost pleased!

And before anyone hassles me for that comment i dont actually mean he is pleased i just wish he had some sort of sad face he could roll out for a change.

pretty sure that Mido-Keane were the preferred choice.... Modo then went off for the African Nations Cup (Egypt got to the Final and won, so he was away a good few weeks)...

I remember the 1st 2 games that season when Mido-Defoe played, we beat Portsmouth I think and after 2 games we topped the Prem.... Jol was the manager then and it was well recorded he had misgivings about playing '2 little-uns together' as he said frequently....

I remember Mido playing at Anfield that year, getting sent off against Chavski, assisting 1 and scoring 1 against Citeh away, etc etc.... so I doubt Jol played Keane-Defoe in the league much unless he had little choice..

they all played around 25 games, Mido, Defoe & Keane.  There was always rotation that season including Rasiak.

well done tottenham hotspur today, well played guys, we were excellent, and it shows how far we have come, we outplayed manure, and if it wasnt for vidic, who was absolutely excellent, we would have scored no doubt, he was everywhere, and deserves praise.
the only player who didnt do it for me, and im not slagging him off, was peter crouch, the guy just isnt very good at scoring, he tries, he sets people up , a bit, but we so need a class striker, to finish some of our wonderful moves, which deserve goals, peter crouch is a good option player, but not a starting eleven player, he is just so limited, he is plan b, not plan a.
well done you spurs, i really enjoyed that performance today, and i think most other spurs fans did also.

After some much needed flashbacks and analysis from Gareth Keown, back to today's game. Maybe I'm not used to demand a win against ManU but I'm actually quite pleased with today's result. If you don't concede, you cannot lose. Next time...  ;)

Lasagnegate Season 05/06

Defoe..................36 Prem appearances..........9 goals

Keane.................36 .......................................16 goals

Mido.................. .27........................................11 goals

but Mido had 2 months off for the African Nations Cup, he was a regular in the side til January (last game at Anfield, before AC of Nations)..... only then did Jol start playing Defoe-Keane pairing regularly..

as well as scoring 11 Prem goals, Mido also had more assists than Keane and Defoe combined..... and thats with 2 months in the African Cup...

Rasiak had 8 appearances in total that year.... incl. mostly as substitute or in non-Prem games...

FACT.

I missed the game today totally gutted not to watch it, and was certain we would pull of a victory but a draw is still good enough and a point in the bag.

As we had Crouch start (never keen on that option) were there a lot of long high balls hit up to him with a hope he might head it correctly??? Pav or Defoe should have started IMO Crouch is too easy for a cecent Cb to handle.

Happy with the point today, can somone sum up how we played for me please better from here the gutter press.

Im happy with a draw, and i would have bitten someones hand off if they offered me a draw before the game. Happy we kept a clean sheet (Dawson you really are a legend and i would let you shag my girl anyday). Gutted that it was another 0-0 though! I must have been to about 20 goalless draws in the past few years and i dont get down there as often as i use to! Atmosphere was excellent as always! Well done Spurs! YID ARMY

Keane and Defoe were 1st choice for Harry at the very beginning of last season (Fall '09) and Crouch was the impact player...

Back to the game...my wife made an excellent point post-match. When she asked about the result, I informed her that it was a scoreless draw. She then asked why I wasn't pleased. I replied that I believed we should have won and that we had let an opportunity pass. She laughed and said, "Just look at how far Spurs have come! A year ago you would have been happy to prevent United from scoring, now you EXPECT to beat them! Sounds like they're doing great."

She's right. We may be in 5th place, but there isn't a single team in the Premiership we should fear. In fact, the only team in the world I would not EXPECT to get a result against is Barcelona at Camp Nou. I sincerely hope that we can bring in a top-flight striker. No one will want to play us then. We would have finished ManUtd with a little more class up front.

of course Defoe-Keane was his preferred pairing at the beginning of last season.... Mido and Berbatov had already left and Bent too

but even that was soon overcome, as soon as Crouch demonstrated even a modicum of credibility as a starting-striker....

and I repeated.... over the last 5yrs, Defoe-Keane were never played as a preferred 1st-choice, or at most: on very few extended periods

Great post and I totally agree...... I'm gutted we never beat them but the gap in class between us is so small now you couldn't tell who the league leaders were but just watching !!!!!!

I think we should now break the bank and sign Andy Carroll and no matter what happens Luca Modric must stay at the Lane, I'm beginning to think this little Croatian wizard is going to be as much of a legend at White Hart Lane as a certain Mr Hoddle !!!!!!!!!!

i watched the lottery boys s**tty the other day, hoping to see wolves beat them, and it so nearly happened, wolves outclassed them in the first half, but then lost their way in the 2nd, pity, now im telling you guys s**tty, even with nearly a billion spent on players , they are still average, but what makes them dangerous is tevez, without him they would struggle, no doubt, and dzeko will be okay also, but they will be beaten quite a few more times, especially by us, by the way they are still spending, and uefa are not impressed by this, they are so in debt, theyre a joke, trying to BUY glory.
if we had a player as dangerous as tevez, you could add 10 points at least to our points total, thats what we so need, and we must buy one in jan, i would try for aguero, suarez.

ugs glenn hoddle was my favourite player, he was a magician, he could walk by opponents, he could pass a ball to a fellow player, over half the pitch, and drop it on a sixpence, and his shots were absolutely fantastic, and dont forget his goalkeeping skills, he was good at  that also, modric is a great player, but is no glenn hoddle, i wish he was.

The biggest difference between the 2 teams right now is discipline on defense.  Is manure EVER out of freaking position on defense?  To score on them when they're on form, you either have to have a brilliant play or lucky bounce.  There just isn't any space allowed.

United defended very well yesterday but we played into there hands, pumping high balls up to Crouch all the time....thats bread and butter for Rio and Vidic!...that is not the way we play, but we always go for that high ball when Crouch is on....i hate it!....put Crouch back on the bench....i cant believe he didnt start with Defoe either!

Thats one that got away yesterday..but as WilsonJet has said we really are closing the gap on the likes of United and the rest.

What a preformance from Modders...the guy is outstanding..a class act...as Harry has said, if we sell him...we might as well all pack up and go home....we have to keep him at all costs.

ManUre are not that great... they just have alot of experienced players in defence and CM that dont make errors.... they have a relaxed discipline that only comes when you've been there/done it....

but if either Rio or Vidic gets injured for a few weeks, things can and I believe will change... they dont have great cover at CB..

Derry spot on fella all sound points there!

I knew when my other half text me the Spurs line up and Crouch was starting that we would result to that method which doesnt suit us, plus Crouch cant head or do anything with the ball, he is a squad player and impact sub at best.

Nice to come away with a point, but after all the stuff I have read and seen they were there for the taking and 3 points could have so easily been ours as their defence was the big difference in the end and that earnt them that point!

Agree for the most part, but there were plenty of times when we worked the ball around well attempting to create space, and it almost seemed as though they had an extra player.  They're just incredibly disciplined in their half of the pitch.  That being said, a foot lower on VDV's curling shot & we win.

corn-rows= bae on top of his game, he was a class act yesterday. Toothless up front. Nearly lost control of my bowels when i saw that crouch was starting. Oh well would have taken 3 points before hand so cant complain.
A good performance overall and modric was brill. Also thought palacious had a great game as well. His confidence went a little after those 2 howlers though.
Wonder what alan hansen thought of BAE playing nani off the pitch.??????

Giggsy was the premierships dirtiest player of the weekend (5 fouls). Rafael got sent off (2 yellows).  This alone shows how much pressure we put the Manure under. Add in Rooney (forced) to right m/f, Vidic and Ferdinand playing out of their skins desperately trying to keep us out. Oh the dissappointment of the draw. Oh the pride of watching us outplay, outpass and outclass Utd on live tv beamed all around the world! No we didn't get three points, but believe me we put out a big notice to everyone that we are a serious team.
Why didn't we win? you may ask.
Plenty of reasons already given, but personally I think the real reason was that we didn't quite have that elusive, powerful mental belief that "we deserve it". Had this performance been against ANY other premier team we would have won.
In 2 seasons Harry has got us to within 1 step of challenging for the title. Can we take that next step, Can we step onto the pitch EVERY game with the belief "we are better than you and we will prove it"?

I dont think you can just look at the number of fouls to decide who is dirtiest.... a player can have 10 fouls for obstruction and another can decapitate your shin-bone with just 1 tackle...

we outplayed them at Old Toilet even 2yrs ago in the 1st half, then the usual refereeing decisions went their way.... with the Howard Webb given penalty for a 'foul' on Carrick.... Webb even admitted he was wrong afterwards..
