This is going to be such a difficult game especially if we don't score early. Ideally we will get an early goal and they will have to open up, leaving nice big gaps behind so Bale and Lennon can get in and cause some havoc. I know everyone is saying that we should do this without too many problems but I'm not so sure, Young Boys have something to defend and if they manage to get to half time at 0-0 then it's gonna get really tense the longer it goes on. I just hope if this happens that we don't start to get desperate and start playing long ball or punting balls into the box from all angles. I'm getting really nervous about this game almost as much as I was on May 23rd 1984, it's a game we really can't afford to lose not so much money wise but history wise !!!!

Id say 2 goals would kill this game for both teams.

If we manage to score 2 first. We will win guaranteed! However if we were to go 1-1 by halftime, Expect our chances for CL Stage reduced to miraculous.

I do hope we dont concede. What i want is for our players! Especially our fcking strikers to get their shooting boots on! Bale will score also he must score.

wander if you-know-who will make an appearance....Did you mean Gallas? he is cup tied as he wasn't registered before the first playoff, think we can add him soon although.

I really hope Pav or Defoe play, if all we have is Crouch again better hope Bale gets our goals, he is the only recognised goal scorer left. Hope to see Lennon and King back.

Midfield wise, We dont have anyone except our youth. If Jenas aint fit, Then Hudds and SgtWilson is our only midfield pair with Krancjar as our only backup.

Modders will miss the game
Ohara went under the knife
Sandro isnt registered

I think we should start with Hudd and Palacios, if Modders isn't fit.

And Pav must start. He had some CL experience and can score goals. Crouch isn't scoring at moment.

I whould like to see that starting XI tomorrow

Gomes
Charlie-Daws-King-BAE
Lennon-Hudd-Modric-Bale
Kranjkar-Pav

We should win, I don't think they'll be able to handle Lennon and Bale!

Crouchy is f*$#in CLUTCH! The crosses by Bale are sickeningly accurate especially given the conditions. Palacios looks good too. Love the way the team pulled together at the back when Gomes hurt himself. I've got the feeling there's going to be a 4th goal for Spurs and possibly more before this is over.

Big up to Peter Crouch. He really came to play today.

He really did.  The goals don't even tell the whole story for him.  He was excellent the entire game playing up top and distributing after receiving long balls, primarily with his head.  It was like watching a center in basketball perfectly playing the high post.

I thougt Palacios was excellent, apart from 1 error...... think he may be a better allround bet than Modric as THudd's partner... the CM looked alot more solid than when Modric is there...

Just though he was very average m8. Huddlestone and Modric are certain starters with Bale and Lennon on the Wings.

it wont happen straight away, as Modric will look very good in parts of certain games, but I think that Arry will be looking to provide some steel and 93min running-power next to THudd in the mid-long term... Modric may be on the market as early as January..

I just dont see Modric and THudd working well in half our games, and the game in Bern highlighted this perfectly in the 1st half..

So looking forward to the draw (almost as much as i am just relieved to avoid the abuse from other teams fans for losing to a team called young boys)

not at all... I think we look more solid and also have better options to score when playing 2 proper solid CMs who can screen the Back4 better when we use 2 such attacking wingers such as Lennon and Bale...

no Modric in last 5 halves of football.... we looked far more comfortable indeed,  and never looked nearly as vulnerable...

maybe a THudd or Modric  +  more athletic CM....... but not both together so much..

I had to listen to the whole game on the radio in the car doing to long journey from Leeds down to Bristol and was going mentalk the whole way!!!! I tried to block it out and put the game to the back of my head most of the day because i was nervous but it didnt work. Im so relieved we did it and now we can look onwards and upwards and have a party at home to Wigan on saturday, got my tickets should be a great atmosphere! Also Crouch ALWAYS turns up and performs in big games, cant give him enough credit what a legend! Looking forward to the draw later......COYS

Of course! Haha Im with ya Riff..

I think our strikers should be able to score more with both our wingmans are able to contribute huge amount of perfect chances every match.

I mean look at Bale, 4 assist !!!! in 1 match!!

That doesnt count the probability of Lennon and our CM players

With those chances our strikers should get their shooting boots on. Heck i think from now if we cant do another 3-0 win or atleast score more than 1 goal i think its useless if we are in the champs league. LoL..

gotta keep Crouch.... he's our most consistent striker in big games.

and he could well be our Weapon-X against Inter Madrid Utd this season... apart from 1 error and 1 unlucky crossfield-pass which was intecepted I thought Palacios had a fantastic game and his positioning, 1-touch passing was exquisite at times... not to mention his usual physical presence attributes in CM...

Modric who ??

Was a tad disappointed to see Crouch grab the match ball though....yeah yeah I know hat trick and all, but on the opposition side there was a lad from Enfield, former season ticket holder, who was living his dream to play at WHL.....can guarantee that he'd have loved that trophy.

Would have been a decent gesture from Crouchy, it's not the first nor last hat trick he will score.

Modric who ??

Come on dude! Before Bale caught fire Luka was the most valuable commodity we had. He is the player on our team that the bigger clubs covet the most. Against Man City he intercepted 11 passes - ELEVEN! And he's picking them clean - no yellow cards. City has got as much talent as anyone in the world save maybe Barca. I can kinda see how you might prefer our style of play when he's not in there, but we've sure won our fair share of games because of him as well. I love Wilson and the mettle that he adds. He's a Spur, and played great last night, but he's inconsistent at times too.

5 halves against Stoke and YBB, i'll see that and raise you a Hudd + Modric v's Ars*nal and Chelsea last season. I know what games i will be taking as the yard stick.

Of course the idea of a squad is you are strong enough to adapt and for some games a Hud + Pal might be the better option. You won't be able to swop if you sell someone though.

Modric wont be sold this season, so you can all relax..

he does some things very well but he can be very defficient in other more mundane (but still vital) areas re. covering space at the right time, recovery pace to re-position, physical presence in the middle of the field, etc.... all the things really that the average fan wouldnt even notice cos they iz too busy at marvelling at the latest pert piroette performed with the ball at his feet...

rest assured that coaches do pick up on these points.. and maybe the solution will come from in-hpuse when Sandra starts to play a few games for us.. or maybe Arry sees in Diarra: the perfect foil for someone like THudd who is now more influencial in our play then Modric I feel as he dictates the game's pace and flow more...

but as Diarra isnt coming I think, Modric should get a few games in still...

Gareth we have just had the biggest result in the clubs history since 1984 and all you can do is slag off Modric, who if I remember was wanted by Man Ure in the summer. Modric is no small part responsible for us being where we are now and if he had been fit would of played without any doubt. He is an outstanding player and as many pundits have pointed out our only potentially world class player so why are they so wrong and you so right eh!!!!! Next you'll be telling us that Jenas should be playing instead of Modric !!!!
I remember when I was a nipper we had another player who played that I watched from the terraces at WHL and most of the other grounds around London who couldn't tackle, was deemed light weight, didn't track back, couldn't head and was ridiculed for being lazy. That player was a certain Glenn Hoddle who I still rate as the best player I have ever seen in a Spurs shirt, he could change a game with a single pass or one moment of brilliance.
Although I don't think Modric is as good as Glenn Hoddle but he also has the same ability to change a game and do something different, a piece of magic !!!!
Gareth I really don't think you are actually a Spurs fan more of a fan of wind ups or anything to get a reaction so you are the centre of attention.

As for last nights game no player in a white shirt had a bad game the whole squad are all heroes and it will go down in history of the club as the day the sleeping giant awoke... mark my words !!!!

actually Ugs, I agreed with you earlier that nobody in the Spurs team played badly and I even defended Palacios when 1-2 said he'd had a poor game..

Glenn Hoddle is yet another of these wonderful players that can look fantastic with the ball... and a huge liability to the team when he (and thus the entire team) dont have it.... which is the  majority of the time..

but he gave good camera, I'll give him that...

Huge liability without the ball are players like Huntelaar who never track backs at all!

11 passes intercepted by Modric against City. He must have run into them accidentally - over, and over, and over again. It's downright freakish if you think about it. How did he do that since he is so poor at "filling the space" and "tracking back" as trollbait says?

Title: Re: Tottenham 4-0 BSC Young Boys - 2nd Leg
Post by: Gareth Keown on August 26, 2010, 11:28:20 PM
intecepting the ball 11 times in 90mins is neither here nor there.... does it show the number of times  Citeh had such easy control of the midfield in the 2nd half, the gaps left when he wasnt even in a good position to even attempt to intecept or tackle ??...

THAT part of the job is mostly about running-power: to always be in the right space at the right moment so that teams dont even attempt to move the ball thru the space you occupy/control.... THAT... in a nutshell is what a guy like Jenas does so well... the art of controlling the other team's play without even touching the football....

most of the game for any player is played around the small moments when they actually control the ball.... those that can influence the game best when not in possession of the ball are the real great footballers in any team... either creatively or defensively...

99% of those who claim to know/like/understand football will never get this simple fact, in the whole of their lifetimes...

its not their fault tho.... its just beyond them.

Apparently, it's "neither here nor there" when I call you on your rampant BS and you simply choose not to address it. That stat from the city game is spectacular. Here's another one for you:

Luka Modric - 6 years : 70,000 pounds a week

Gareth are you honestly going to sit there and bash the hell out of Luka Modric and as your exhibit A: evidence of wonderness cite...wait for it....Jermaine Jenas?  Really?

That's actually insane, no really, it's insane.  If OED were to open it up a public competition for a new working definition for the word "crazy", you'd be a shoo-in for the prize.   Seek help.

Aosoth, you are unremarkably 1 of the 99%.... dont strain yourself trying to figure out the how and why, just continue to enjoy the great football this team is gonna be producing this season... thats really all you need to concentrate on....
