I don't think I need to emphasise any more how much this is a MUST-WIN for Spurs at this point, for momentum reasons.

Wigan are in trouble and will be fighting for survival so this will be a tough game. We need to hope that the players morale hasn't been damaged by the recent defeats and that we can bounce back and play with the style and panache that has served us well lately

TEAM NEWS

Ricardo Rocha is back to boost Martin Jol's defensive options ahead of the trip to Wigan in the Premiership on Sunday (1.30pm).

The Portuguese international is available after being ineligible for the UEFA Cup quarter-final, second leg against Sevilla on Thursday night.

Ledley King made his first start since Boxing Day against Sevilla and the skipper is named in the squad.

Paul Stalteri remains a doubt with the hip problem that kept him out of Thursday night's encounter while Lee Young-Pyo, Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Tom Huddlestone (all knee) and Anthony Gardner (hairline fracture, fibula) remain out. However, Assou-Ekotto, Huddlestone and Gardner are all improving.

Mido misses out with illness which means Lee Barnard holds onto his place in the squad - he marked his first start of the season for the reserves with a goal at Aston Villa on Tuesday and coach Chris Hughton feels he's worthy of his chance.

"He's done a fair bit of training and score a very good goal for the reserves at Villa, what we expect of him now," said Chris. "I've no doubts had he been fit for longer periods this season that he would have figured in more squads.

"He's had a good period in the reserves and he's certinly earned the right to be involved in the first team squad. I'm pleased he's got that chance now.

"Ricardo Rocha is back, so that's a positive, Paul Stalteri is a doubt but there is still a possibility he could play and the big plus is that Ledley King came through his first 90 minutes on Thursday."

Could go either way. We could be knackered and down from Thurs and Wigan will be up for it and we will play s**t and lose. Or we could come out all guns blazing and utterly batter them.

I hope King plays again, just have Rocha on the bench. Give Ifill a start in place of Tainio and put him at LB.

The reason we drew on thursday was because of our defence. Surely Martin Jol can see that and make a change.

I think our defence should be:
        -----------Robinson-----------
----Chimbonda--Dawson--King----Ifil----

Oh and i don't think Jenas should play. He hasn't done anything to impress me the last few games, maybe if he doesn't play he will realise that if he wants to be in the first team he will have to up his game!

Yeah agree Jenas needs to be dropped. He thinks he's untouchable and is guaranteed a place in the starting line up if he is fit.

I'm starting to think we should get rid of Jenas. Far to often he disappears in games. When he was injured we played Tainio along side Zokora and that worked really well.

I want Huddlestone, i think he has the power to change games. One of our best players imo but no one seems to agree with me :D

Just noticed that we have two games in hand on Bolton and everyone else ahead of us except Everton, on whom we have one game in hand. That's all the more reason that we have to WIN WIN WIN!!
Title: Wigan Vs Spurs
Post by: Daniisco on April 14, 2007, 09:17:09 PM
If we win are 2 games in hand we'll be level with Bolton. Actually we would go above them coz they are on -1 GD. So yes a must win tomorrow.

yh i think huddlestone is one of our best players. a real shame hes injured.
i cant see us losing another game this season if we play like we did second half against seville.

I totally disagree, zokora, malbranque and jenas are all better than the tommy... Zokora goes on gr8 runs are best midfielder @ the mo. Malbranques dangerous with the ball @ his feet, jenas adds composure + experience 2 the side. Yes huddlestone is a gr8 passer + strong, HOWEVER he does not pull his wait around the pitch + i feel doesnt have the pace yet. Also i feel he doesnt use his strength well enough and i think he feels the pressure in (big) games. 4 the moment he's a very good replacement 4 zokora when hes tired... Also he adds a different option 2 Jol as hes probly 1 of the best passers in the side and does have a wicked shot. But i feel he still has 2 learn and he isnt just ready 4 regular 1st team action, but next/2seasons time will be a gr8 asset...

I think the players owe the fans a massive performance today and anything other than a convincing win will be unacceptable

I'd pick Hudds over Jenas any day. Plus Hudds is still very young and will improve greatly whereas Jenas, IMO isnt gonna improve much beyond the point he is at now.

I'd rather have jj start than huddlestone at the mo but give it a season or so and huddlestone will reall start realising his full potential and will be a regular starter.

Dont think he should be taking our set plays tho, whats with him smashing the ball 40 yards over the bar everytime?

Huddlestone?

He's class at set pieces, specially the crossing one :spoton:

He always gets them in the right area, often perfect

Tho when he shoots from free kicks, they usually suck

yer huddlestone is good at set peices in my opinion he is much better than jenas, jenas rarely puts in a good cross and the last few games i havnt heard alot about him at all.

In the circumstances a decent result our defending is at times atrocious but we look good going forward 2 terrific goals and a couple of good saves from Robbo. Bring on the Gooners.

Did you see jenas 2 day? Him,Dawson,Robbo,Keane were top performers 2da...

MY Ratings:

Robbo 9 (let in 2 goals which he may have been able 2 save but kept us in the game with some gr8 saves)

Chimbonda 6 (very quiet today, didnt get forward at all)

Dawson 9 (Got the ball away almost every time it came in the box, made a defence look not too shaky)

Rocha 5 (Looked very shaky, especially in the air although made some decent tackles... We really do need King)

Ifil 6 (also quiet but managed well on the left and didnt look like he was going to make any mistakes)

Lennon 5 (hardly saw him all game thought he only made about 5 touches in the 70mins he was on for!)

Jenas 10 (made some brilliant runs, one-2s played the ball around... Also won us the penalty after sprinting over the whole pitch. Only weakness today was his freekicks altho put in some good corners and had a top-corner freekick saved by wigan keeper)

Zokora 7 (quiet and didnt make too many runs today, thought he was saving his energy probably coz of being tired from last game. Although passed the ball around and looked competent with the ball at his feet)

Tainio 6 (also hardly noticed him, just kept the shape of midfield although would have preferred to have seen lennon on the right as he didnt pose any threat)

Keane 9 (Great with the ball at his feet and linked up with Berbatov marvelously. Scored 2 goals but in 1st half missed a practically open goal but sliced it...Scored the last goal to grab the point. Also worked really hard for the team despite also playing on thursday.)

Berbatov 9 (Scored a great goal. Won us plenty of freekicks as Wigan struggled to deal with him. Although I would like to see him give us more of an aerial threat up front, but still played great and couldn't have done much more).

Man Of The Match: Jenas (Made the attacks, full of energy as he was everywhere and always played a part in our attacking build up.)

Jenas wasnt that good mate, one of his better games for sure. But in the 2nd half he dwelled on the ball far too much and gave the ball away on a number of occasions. Also his freekicks are useless!

Lennon needs to be on the right, did nothing at all in the game.

Should have won the match, even though they had good chances to score. Our defence is rubbish atm, the opposition look like they will score at every attack.

We also seem to only want to score when the opposing team gets one first. Just don't understand that.

Next game must win! and we all know who its against.  :spurs crest:

I agree one of Jenas' better games, our defence looked shakey apart from dawson and the midfield wasn't on top form. We need King back and Lee or Ekoto, then we might stop conceeding so many goals.

And also imo Huddlestone, i think he is one of our best players.

Our attck is awesome ;)

The fact that Jenas did well today just underlines my frustration with him. Yes he makes good runs, yes he has a good engine and yes at times he shows flashes of skill. The problem is he doesn't do it anywhere near often enough he gives the ball away far to much his free kicks are often wasteful  and for a lot of games he is little more than a passenger. He must frustrate a lot of people you can see that he is a good player but he really must find some consistency in order to be worth his place in the team.

Tell you what, we played some really nice football, specially in the 1st half.

It was like watching Brazil

Unusual for us, usually its all untidy :D

I don't know, we usualy show some flashes of quality upfront. Though today was more quality all round the pitch rather than just on the attack:D

Post by: Berba's girl on April 15, 2007, 05:20:35 PM
Oh so frustrating!  54 seconds - are you kidding me? Woeful defending. I can see why Ifil has not played - he's the only one we have left & so had to play. Maybe that's unfair as it's his first game but you've gotta be made of tougher stuff. Thank God for Berba - brilliant feet, great goal. There wasn't much Robbo could've done about Wigan's second & at least we didn't hang our heads. We'd had the better of the play up until that point. Unsure of the penalty decision - it's one of those you'd have to look at again & again but not going to complain. Keano cool as a cucumber as per usual. Classy. Awful defending again for Wigan's third - won't harp on about too much, we all know it's a big problem.
Keano's equalizer was sensational though. What a take! So difficult but he kept his eye on the ball all the way.

Unfortunately I did predict this one as a draw. I'm not usually right. :-( One point is not good enough. We've gotta win against teams like Wigan if we wanna qualify for Europe. Why MJ insists on putting Lennon on the left is beyond me. Why not put Tainion on the left? Especially as the game progressed you could clearly see it wasn't working, so CHANGE IT!! This is what frustrates me about MJ's tactics.

Robbo 8       some good saves, can't blame him for the goals
Chimbonda 6  not a great game, despite being back on his favoured right
Dawson 8    not the best start but ended up the rock that he's been all
                 season
Rocha 6   still not confident about his abilities
Ifil 5       contributed to Wigan's first goal
JJ 8        best game in ages but still inconsistent throughout
Tainio 6   didn't really notice him much
Lennon 5   was non-existent
Zokora 6   didn't get involved enough
Malbranque (sub) 5   not much to say really
Berba 8     some great touches today, fab goal - quality
Keano 8    ran everywhere & worked hard, fab goal, cool penalty
JD (sub) 4   only had 15 mins but didn't manage anything

I suppose we've gotta hope Chelscum win today so the UEFA places extend to 7th place. Not the ideal way to do it but it may just be a lifeline.

Never a better time to beat the Arse is there? Just get the bloody defence organised pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeze.

I think some of u are giving us too much credit today saying it was a good performance, it was absolutely s**t, how can it be a good performance if u concede 3 goals to wigan, our defence has not been able to defend corners all season, dread to think how many corners weve conceeded off.
When the opposition has a corner against us they win the header 8/10 times, should be the ohter way round.
Dawson had a great game but he still looks really dodgy sometimes, should of dealt with donkey heskey better through the 1st half.
Attacking was ok not great though.

:s That performance weren't s**t, defensive wise it was but tbh we are s**te at defending on the attacks we looked like scoring often imo.

You said that too many people are saying it was a good performance, well you just went to the other extreme. There was no way that was a s**t performance just not as good as itcould have been defensivley.:aaaa coffee:

mate how can it be called an overall good performance if we conceeded 3 goals against a team like wigan, yeh i agree certain aspects like our attacking were ok, not the performance on a whole.

I didn't say it was an overall good performance, i said that the attacking was good the defending was bad. no where di i say it was overall good.

Anyway when i made my 1st post saying i thought the performance was s**t n some ppl were giving us too much credit i wasnt directing it to something u had said previously.

JOLS THOUGHTS ON THE GAME

Jol admits he is delighted by his side's goalscoring record but concerned by their vulnerability in defence.

"It was a great game of football, but they scored from crosses and we should have known their weapons," he told Sky Sports.

"On the other side of that, we used our quality and that is why we scored two terrific goals, and even the Jermaine Jenas penalty was a great attack.

"We could have nicked it but at the end we have to be satisfied with a point.

"We score goals and even at the end Jermain Defoe came on and showed me that he wants to play for us, but we have to do better defensively."

Tottenham's schedule of fixtures has been hectic in recent weeks due to their European commitments, but following their Uefa Cup exit to Sevilla on Thursday, Jol is determined to qualify for the competition again.

"We played last Thursday, Saturday, Thursday and then Sunday so playing a fourth game in ten days was not easy," he explained.

"Coming to Wigan can be difficult but we showed our quality.

"The main thing now is that we finish in the top six because we want to play in Europe again."

Yet again our inability to defend in the air and in set pieces shone through. Yeah we may of scored 3 but our defending was woeful. I thought it was a poor performance and if we thought we could with the UEFA Cup but concede 3 against Wigan then we are and were very wrong.

I personally rate and like Jenas, played very well today and currently would play him over Huddlestone untill he loses some weight and gains some pace and reacts quicker.
Title: Robinsob's got an assist
Post by: goods7 on April 16, 2007, 02:31:13 PM
I liked the goal Keane's gotten from Paul Robinson's long pass.
It was terrific!!

Just a long pass and a shot made a goal!!
What an efficient attack!!

Maybe Wigan's defense was not good. Some people may have said like that.
But, Robinson's kick is strong and accurate in many cases.
Keane? He is also an artist with Berba.
A ball bounced much and he made a volley-shooting, and also it was high shot since he saw a goalkeeper move forward from the goal.

G R E A T ! ! !

Yeah Keanes goal was a beauty. Just the confident look on his face was worth it. Sometimes that old direct route works a treat
