Martin Jol admits he is still smarting about Tottenham's defeat to Ars*nal in the Carling Cup and feels the players need to secure victory over The Gunners on Saturday to hand the fans something to take from the season.

Spurs made progress in all three cup competitions, but bowed out to Chelsea in the FA Cup, Sevilla in the Uefa Cup and Ars*nal in the Carling Cup.

Jol's charges led 2-0 during the first leg of their semi-final, before succumbing to Arsene Wenger's young guns.

Tottenham are off the pace in the Premiership, but still in the hunt to secure a spot in Europe and Jol feels victory over their neighbours is of paramount importance.

"We want to do well in that one - we feel we owe that much to the supporters," said Jol.

"If I think back to the last game against them here in the Carling Cup when we led 2-0 - it still hurts."

God yeah it still hurts. Still can't believe how we threw that one away. We have to win this, dont care how just have to win it.

I didn't manage to get tickets either - sold out in hours. Gutted! This is the 2nd consecutive season I've missed this tie. Will have to settle for Prem Plus. Trouble is, every time I pay for view, Spurs lose. Hope I'm not a jinx. It would be oh so sweet to do em over this time - surely it's our turn?

Hope to see them win but tbh honest we just have no luck on ppv against any teams.

I remember chelsea last year

Was devastated, went to the pub first thing to watch it and sat there the whole game screaming my head off.

THEN as Gallas scored that goal (i'd just said to my bro that we always concede late goals lol) some typical chelsea fan started screaming at the screen after not sayin a thing throughout the whole match.

I was livid!!

Think we'll get somet here tho cos the players have had a fairly decent rest since the wigan game and will know that they have to give the fans something after recent weeks.

I'll say either a score draw or Spurs by the odd goal.

Post by: topspursf on April 18, 2007, 12:38:23 PM
the team is well not really performing too well after our loss to sevilla and if we show them we still back them 100% then we have a chance to beat Ars*nal if berbatov does his job our team will tick if it ticks we beat/draw Ars*nal then it comes down to our defence it was dreadful against wigan last week so they need to up the tempo as adebayor and baptista will not be easy to defend against and when fabregas starts playing he could tear our defence down it seems as if Ars*nal have regained form 2-1 bolton and then 3-1 man city so lets just hope they can win this one.  for the first time in how many years i feel confident we wont get thrashed.  we lost 3-0 away this season to them so lets do the same to em at home.

TEAM NEWS

Robbie Keane is unlikely to feature against Ars*nal on Saturday after sustaining a knee injury against Wigan last weekend.
The only long-term absentee now is Lee Young-Pyo (knee), while Anthony Gardner and Benoit Assou-Ekotto have returned to training but will not be considered. Tom Huddlestone, Mido and Ledley King are all fit and Paul Stalteri is rated 50-50.

"Robbie Keane has an inflammation of the knee he suffered against Wigan and I don't think there is a chance of him being in the squad," reported Martin Jol this afternoon. "Lee Young-Pyo has had knee surgery and will be out for at least three months, while Anthony Gardner is still out with his hairline fracture - he is training and I feel he needs another week before coming back.

"Benoit Assou-Ekotto is doing well and trained with us this morning, but is still not 100 per cent and is unlikely to be ready for Saturday. Tom Huddlestone is back in full training and is available for selection, as is Mido, with Paul Stalteri 50-50.

"Ledley King is fine, he had a good rest after the Sevilla game and will be in the team.

-Lennon-----Hudd-----Zakora---Malbranque-
--------------Berba-----Defoe-------------

I put C.lee in there because he's left footed. Although he's inexperienced i think we will be vulnerable on the left if we don't have a left footed player there.

Although it is not easy for him as keano and berba are such a dream-team you don't find often.

Le @rse Team News

Cesc Fabregas is rated as doubtful after suffering from a virus, meaning he could miss his first league game of a consistently excellent campaign.

Ars*nal's attacking options remain restricted with Thierry Henry (stomach and groin), Robin van Persie (metatarsal) and Theo Walcott (shoulder) all ruled out, and stand-in Emmanuel Adebayor has failed to score in his last nine games.

Support may not come in the shape of Freddie Ljungberg as the Swede is doubtful due to a hamstring injury, whilst Abou Diaby also sustained a head injury and was substituted as he played in an advanced role in the 3-1 win over Manchester City.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRGH!   What happened to the passion second half? We came out flying straight from the k/off and Arse just weren't in the game. Spurs quite deservedly got the first goal but after the break it was like a totally different team....except for Berba who was clearly a class above everyone else & looked like the only one who wanted to win. You could see the frustration in his body language. If he doesn't get the support, he's gonna want to play for a better team and we need to keep him as long as possible. The passing was absolutely dreadful and the woeful defending yet again.....how many times do we concede from set pieces? OMG!

Thanks to JJ for saving our blushes with a screamer in injury time. He did sod all else - proves how inconsistent he is! We really didn't deserve it either. 'We was lucky'!

Robbo 7   didn't really have to do much, goals not his fault
Chimbonda 5   very poor today - Arse's 1st goal his fault
Rocha 7   average game
King 7     average game - good to have him back
Daws 7   average game for him
Lennon 6   still put on the left IT DOESN'T WORK!!!
Tainio 6   hardly noticed him
Malbranque (sub) 5  awful
Zokora  7  some good surging runs
Huddz (sub) 5  pretty poor
JJ  7   only gets a 7 because of the goal
Keano  7   looked lively 1st half
Berba  8   MOTM by far
JD (sub) 5 did he get a touch?

First half was ok contained em well and didn't let them create to much. Second half I thought we were really poor sat to far back and gave the ball away to often. The defending of set pieces was dreadfull yet again and our passing was atrocious at times. Still we got a vital point so I guess I shouldn't complain to much. Not sure about Rocha at left back he did some things well but didn't offer much going forward.

I was at the game to day and saw some of the worst managerial decisions i have ever seen. We played relatively well in the first half but the second half was a different story. You would of thought martin jol would of learnt his lesson by now about sitting back E.G. Carling cup semi final first leg 2 0 up at half time, come out second half and sit back- final score 2 2. FA cup quarter final 3 1 up at half time come out second half and sit back- final score 3 3 Today come out second half and sit back on a 1 goal lead for some unknown reason yet again we cock it up, we were so lucky to get a draw, we did not deserve it at all. A few more of martin jols great work today..........taking lennon off and putting Huddlestone on and this was at 2 1 down, y take our best attacking option off and put a defensive midfielder on, also y was jenas not taken off at half time he was absolutely awfull today the worst i have seen him although he scored the goal he contributes nothin to the team and he is lazy. Berbatov was trying to do everything himself today because he knew he had no support, he is getting more and more frustrated i will be very surprised if we hold onto him in the summer.
Im starting to get concerned about Martin Jol, when has he ever made a game changing sub, y bring defoe on with 8 mins left. Sort it out martin

So pleased with the result even though it was disappointing.

Copy of the CC game, we flew out of the blocks, were all over them and deserved our lead. Then we went negative as usual and Arse came back and really did dominate us until THAT goal by JJ. Hudd did sweet FA when he came on, gave it away everytime and was off the pace. Tainio didn't do much, Lennon needs to be on the right and Rocha did well at LB.

It' s difficult not to agree with most of this but I dont think Lennon was in the game enough to be called our best attacking option. There may well be fitness reasons we know nothing about behind the substitutions. And if those were the worst managerial decisions you've ever seen you obviously never watched England under Sven.

Prehaps he brought Huddlestone on to create that killer pass we lacked all through out the game. I can totally understand that sub, Lennon didn't to much through out the game and Tommy can create.

Oh, and he has made a game changing sub.

If he never brought on Stalteri against Wham, we wouldn't be calling him the Unsung Canadian Hero he is today.

Luck some times has to shine on our side, we moan when we do get it, we moan when we don't.

Are you one of the ''Jol out'' Brigade? Curious, that is all.

lol theres a "jol out" brigade?

I think that your right about jol.

Sometimes his tactics confuse me like when we were sitting off today when we had a slim lead.

But his subs on the whole tend to be sound as far as i can see.

Would like to see him give Defoe a bit more of a game rather than just the last 10 minutes as a last resort though

Am I the only one that thought the Rosicky foul that led to the first Ars*nal goal was incredibly suspect? :Green_Colorz_PDT_46 Of course, the recent play of Czech footballers has led me to cynically accept this as the norm from that lot.

DIIIIIIIIIIVE :rolleyesj:

i voted for berbatov and it was a closely run thing between him and zokora.

Zokoras looked more and more impressive as the seasons gone on this year and his long runs are really starting to impress along with his defence, really runs his socks off.

Quality report.

Nice touch with the quotes

I thought exactly the same. He dived against us back at the Immigraints to get the penalty. Ironic that  it was against Jenas, again. :rolleyesj:

Both free kicks were pretty soft imo. There were alot of worse fouls through out the game where the ref played on.

And i dunno if it's been mentioned, but it didn't half piss me off when what ever his name is pushed the lino in the back, then they had a little joke about it.:fyou:

:WTF: WTF, eh?

I don't have anything wrong with the Czechs as a people - beautiful cities, beautiful women, awesome classical music - but their team sports athletes, with a few exceptions (Pavel Nedvěd and ice hockey player Lukaš Krajiček to name a couple classier ones), are complete tosspots. And Rosicky is up with the worst of them. Pavel Nedved had a worse play happen to him in the WC last year (in the chippiest group of the eight IMO) and he was actually trying to stay up!

I must admit that today changed my mind about Jermaine Jenas. I've been a bit of a critic of his of late, but he had a decent game today, and not just because he scored the buzzer-beater to send the Gooners home with only one point. :D

In the second half i counted 13 shots by Ars*nal before we had our first semi serious attempt on goal.
We were lucky, the team looked frustrated and i thought the Ars*nal defence did a pretty good job. Thank heaven for Jenas

**** Rosicky, the diving little muppet, I knew the North London Formation Diving Squad would be at their best.

i have mixed feelings about this game it still feels like a loss but considering we were losing in the 93rd min it saved having to listen to the goons about beating us

When I saw Jenas score at the end of injury time, it was moment of ecstacy.
The commmentators in my country were saying that TH never defeated Ars*nal for about 7 years. Thus, I was feeling this time also TH loses...

But, then dramatically, Jenas scored.

THIS IS WHY I LIKE TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR.
