Always a difficult team to get points from but we need to stamp our class on these teams in order to cement our place in the top four and beyond. We were unlucky not to winn last time around. Everton always put up a good scrap against us.

Hutton & Gallas are both doubtful, Hutton has a swollen foot and Gallas has a tight hamstring so that will probably mean Corluka & Bassong coming in to replace them. Cahill is not going to feature as he is off to the Asia Cup or some bollocks. He is one of there best and most dangerous players and is currently getting the goals for them, im not too worried about them scoring and our defence should be able to handle any threat, we must go at them like we do and take our chances. Im confident of a win here, it will be tough but i reckon we will get the 3 points. YID ARMY

Everton are without top scorer Tim Cahill, who is part of the Australia squad at the Asian Cup.
Johnny Heitinga is again expected to be missing with a knee injury that ruled him out since the end of November.
Tottenham have concerns over the fitness of defenders Alan Hutton and William Gallas after they picked up injuries against Fulham.
Striker Jermain Defoe and defender Younes Kaboul are still unavailable due to suspension.

Everton have traditionally been labelled slow starters to a season, but this campaign is proving to be more pedestrian than most.

With just one victory in their last 10 matches, the Toffees are stuck in 13th place and are just three points clear of the relegation zone. Midfielder Tim Cahill, one of the few players to emerge with credit this season, is now absent at the Asian Cup with Australia, denying manager David Moyes his top scorer and his side's only real goal threat so far. In fact, they have scored as many goals through their own net as they have managed to put past the opposition in their last three games.
In contrast, Harry Redknapp's Tottenham side are flying. Unbeaten in their last 11 matches, they have even managed to keep back-to-back clean sheets, thanks in part to the return of Michael Dawson to shore up their previously porous defence.
This match pits arguably the two form left-sided players in the league against each other. Leighton Baines has been outstanding for Everton this season and has buried the ghost of his World Cup snub, while the performances of Tottenham's Gareth Bale has seen his status upgraded to world class.
Two goals over the Christmas period lifted his tally for the season to 11. Few defenders have been able to shackle the Welsh winger, but the wily skills of Phil Neville neutralised his threat at White Hart Lane in October with a defensive display that turned him into a surprise hit on social networking side Twitter as fans lauded his performance.

Goodison Park is certainly a tough place to go. I predicted a goalless draw but I'd be happy to see our lads get three points and prove me wrong (once again).

this will be a good yardstick as regards where the rest of our season is likely to go without doubt 3 points is an absolute must and feel a victory by a two goal margin is on the cards.

Agreed this is a game we should and must win. Everton are weakened and we have almost a first choice 11, we need to start rolling over teams in these situations and taking maximum points if we are to establish ourselves as title contenders !!!

Im desperate we win this one because chelski are going to win ( think they have wolves at home) and the longer they are out of the top four the better, their bottle will go - the manager will get sacked and turmoil will ensue - wouldnt that be wonderful - watch this space !!

Chelski are the team under pressure and they haven't managed that too well this season.  Slipping up  against Wolves isn't out of the question.  You're right though winning tonight heaps it on them even more

no pace upfront down the middle so Everton ofcourse push up their Back4 into the halfway line.... perfect tactics against Crouch n Vaart... so many Everton players in our half giving many options.... leaving us with no decent outball..

we dont look magnificent today... we look pretty average so far..

bring on Krankie for LM for Crouch.... and put Bale upfront to hopefully make their Back4 think twice before parking on the halfway-line...

Jenas not great when on leftside of CM pairing.... but they have just outnumbered us in the midfield cos their FBs are playing as wingers....

the loss maybe worth it, if it gives Arry and Levy ONE FINAL PUSH to get the counter-attacking striker we need.... if we dont, we can forget Top4 totally.... Citeh will strengthen and Chavski will recover..

this has been a cheap loss today, due to others stumbling.... use it.

i am fu€kin sickened by these. I dont care about other results. Jenas is utters**te and harry is at fault for this. No idea who his best front 2 are. Good to see he rewards pavs superior goal tally by playing peter no goals crouch. Solution?? Bring on Keane??? WTF??? He fails to see how an anonymous jenas is leaving us open down the middle and fails to bring on sandro/wilson???

Niko played his way out of the club with that performance no one will want him. Hutton and gallas also utter crap.

Imagine if we had of had beckham for this game? ???  ??

We would have been annihilated.

There are a very limited number of opportunities in a season to close down competitors when they are faltering. It seems that every time the boys at the top of the table make a misstep we reward them rather than punish them. Champions beat inferior teams consistently. Wigan, West Ham, Everton -- unacceptable. Those are the points we need to stay in the Champions League. Without Bale or Defoe we are shockingly impotent.

Jenas, Hutton, Gallas were s**t, so sloppy with passes and giving the ball away. Poor performance, worst i have seen in a long time, thought it was going to be tough but that was f**king dreadful. VDV looked knackered after 75 minutes, Krancjar was useless, didnt track back or put enough effort in. f**king shambles. At least Chelsea lost to Wolves. YID ARMY

Iv said it before... the CM pairing of Jenas and Modric away from home is just suicide.

same happened against Ars*nal in the first half, that game only changed when we put vdv on the right to narrow up the midfield.

Relying on KJenas to be our defence one out of the 2 CM's will never work... it has to be Palacios all day long
Title: Re: Everton v Tottenham
Post by: Gareth Keown on January 05, 2011, 10:09:21 PM
Bigv... let me reply to you in the same language that youve used :-

what the f**k did the great Modric do today ESPECIALLY DEFENSIVELY ??.... the guy leaves f**king grand-canyons every single f**king time he strolls upfield - where he does f**k all - and then strolls back like hes on a f**king picnic... but as usual for alot of knee-jerks you TOTALLY IGNORE that...

Jenas didnt play well, but he was no worse offensively and noticeably better at covering defensively than Modric.... but of course hes the Spurs scapegoat cos he probably reads the Guardian and not the Sunday Sport (like his teammates do) and drinks a glass of wine at a wine-bar as opposed to pints down some dodgy boozer...

tactically, Everton we spot on..... a very worthwhile lesson for Arry (if he needed telling any further)...

Title: Re: Everton v Tottenham
Post by: Biggs on January 05, 2011, 10:14:11 PM
regardless of who did what defensively.... that partnership doesn't work.

Modric need a DMF along side him in CM.

Harry has never Picked Jenas over Modric, so there no point even suggesting that because Harry won't do that.

SO if he insist on playing Modric he has to play him with Palacios

thats simply isnt true..... in the last 3 games before today we have gained pts on Chelsea and possibly Ars*nal too and kept pace with Citeh..... Everton beat Citeh at Eastlands by a bigger margin than beating Spurs at their own home...

all teams lose games.... its a fact of life..

today we deserved to lose, but I really believe that it will now GALVANISE Arry and Levy to correct the huge tactical hole in our striking dept..... at a cost of losing only 1pt to Citeh and none to Chavski, I'll take that deal every time...

What the f**k are you talking about Gareth? Absolutely no f**king clue about football or Spurs. Why did i even open your post up to think of?! Defoe has now served his 3 match ban and we needed him tonight. VDV should have done better with that chance just before they scored the 2nd but we cant blame him for that awful performance from the whole team. We need the target man we are looking for. Crouch is f**king useless, he should have stayed onside for that goal the prick. HARRY SORT IT OUT! YID AMRY

I do think it was Harry fault tonight, The team selection was wrong.

He never seems to give Pav a chance, i don;t know how he expects him to get together some form if he never give him a run of games

And i don;t know what Palacios did to get dropped, imo he had been playing well in the last 2 matches

Jenas-Modric wasnt the problem today.... having Crouch-Vaart 'upfront' allowed Everton to play a highline (who cares if Crouch wins headers in the centre-circle ??)....

they had 6 in midfield, and we couldnt break out cos even if Bale or Lennon break, chances are the central-area 'forwards' will be plodding behind (with their CBs jogging on alongside them)...

Modric-Jenas have worked very well in some games especially at home... Spurs-Villa at WHL being just 1 example..

if ever there is a good day to lose for the right reasons.... today is that day..

tomorrow will see Arry plotting to get some pace upfront, to keep defences from playing such a highline against us....

but im sorry, Modric and Jenas AWAY from home will not work. At home is a whole different ball game.

away from home you need abit a steel in the middle, which neither Jenas or Modric have
Title: Re: Everton v Tottenham

today was just like the Wet Spam game, where after just 5mins I felt we'd lose..... when teams know that Crouch-Vaart are gonna be our 'forwards' they just think right, lets play our fullbacks especially really high and into midfield, making it 6 there... then the 2 CBs have 40yds to defend against 'sprinters' of Crouch and Vaart's calibre...

when that happens, we are a bottom-6 team..... how do you get possession when you are under such pressure in your own half almost constantly ??
Title: Re: Everton v Tottenham
Post by: aspursfan on January 05, 2011, 10:44:29 PM
Agreed. We desperately needed pace up front with them pressing us so high. I hate to say it, but even if we'd had Darren Bent up front we would have been better equipped to deal with their tactics and formation today.

Then you are able to counter attack.

Yea, Palacios would have helped in that respect, but his passing hasn't been up to par lately. I don't know if he would have known what to do with it when they were pressing so high up the pitch. I guess it's all really speculation. At the end of the day it's a disappointing result, but it isn't the end of the world.

Well in truth i never had any confidence going in 2nd half. Both arguments was fair though

1) Crouch indeed... had me pulling my hair..
2) Our midfield couldnt cope with the pressure Everton mounted.

Ive said to my friends earlier in the match that saha would be alot of trouble... Boy did i regret saying that too early.. What the heck was Gallas thinking Backing off and giving that guy space to shoot!

As for crouch. I think a really... really... great 1 man Striker would do the job. I dont just think he can work against teams like Everton. On another matter..
How come i dont see Sandro anymore on the bench?

I missed the match due to work  :santa_cry:, but some awesome descriptive accounts on here give me the picture that we got totally owned by Everton and due to  :santa_rolleyes:p oor team selection didnt have the right players on the pitch to counter their tactics or put them under any pressure.

I always get that sinking feeling when I see Peter (cant shot, head or dribble with the ball) Crouch is starting Arry just loves the bloke must be the reason he is picked??

On the plus side other teams dropped points to..... can this be our last lesson this season please though its one we already knew!

BAE got officially OWNED by Seamus Coleman last night. I love BAE and think he is a great player but i do think we should get a LB this transfer window to give him a kick up the arse which he sometimes does need. YID ARMY

Some comments on this and previous page are simply apalling but maybe it's just me...

agree.....we have lost one game in 11 boys....ffs get a grip!

A good result now against Charlton on Sunday will set us up nicely for the visit of United...which i think we will win.

Believe

One thing that has come about this season is we do believe in our team now we can turn around any game as its not over till the final whistle goes and we fight every step of the way.  The Everton result goes down as a dissappointment in my book and nothing more where a few points were highlighted.

Am sure we are all confident about Sunday! :santa_afro:

Moving swiftly on...................
Whenever BAE's hair isnt in corn rows he plays poorly. You may laugh but it is a proven statistical fact.

Redknapp needs to rotate our players like the other contenders (Man U, Ars*nal etc...) do. until then we'll never be able to compete on all fronts.
