Do you fancy your chances of being on the Tottenham board?
Pigs may fly, and the Labour party might become the government of this country one day, but fans being on the Tottenham board… don’t be stupid!
After all the backlash, abuse and protests over the Superleague, has Levy and co succumbed to mob rule? The Tottenham board are to introduce a ‘Club Advisory Panel’ which will allow supporters to sit on the club’s board. The question is, if true, which supporters and who will pick them? Whoever it will be, will be marginalised or suffering from Stockholm syndrome (somebody who has a psychological bond with their captures).
We were one of 12 teams to join the contentious European Super League (ESL), only to withdraw following a furious backlash and, from there, humiliation. The club then responded by saying (forced) that they “wholeheartedly regret” the decision to join the ESL. Of course they did.
A club statement said representation on the board would “ensure fans are at the heart of club decision-making, something we greatly welcome”. And, again, of course they do. There is nothing like being chastened and then coming up with “greatly welcome”.
The statement went on and said: “We have all learnt lessons from recent events and have reviewed fan engagement as a priority. As a result we shall be liaising with key stakeholders and establishing a Club Advisory Panel.”
This panel will comprise of elected representatives from different areas of the fanbase and will be “inclusive and reflective of our fans’ diversity”. Excellent; we are all happy now.
I wonder if it had anything to do with the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust (THST) urging the club’s board to resign after participating in the proposed breakaway league, something the club had previously said wouldn’t happen. And if the club says it won’t happen… then it won’t! And if it did, then it will be just a blip and error… all sorted.
A club statement said that they had tried to meet with the trust, who refused to meet and have now appointed the Football Supporters’ Association to mediate in any talks. Tottenham’sresponse; “We are disappointed that the board of the THST has not yet met with the club. The THST, with whom we have worked and, indeed, promoted, for 20 years, has called for the resignations of the Executive Board over the ESL – individuals who have lived and breathed this club for the best part of two decades. We have offered on several occasions to meet board-to-board and discuss an open agenda – excluding a change of club ownership and the resignation of the board. Our door remains open on this basis.”
The THST said it had approached the Football Supporters’ Association to mediate in its dispute with the club. They said, “We need guarantees that any further meetings [with the club] will not be undermined by secret negotiations and behind-the-scenes plots, and that fan views will not be ignored,” the statement said. “Supporters must have confidence that any discussions are being conducted genuinely and in good faith. We are happy to discuss why we think resignations are necessary, and to hear the club’s view on who should be accountable for what has happened. But we cannot pretend that business as usual is an option. Our commitment to dialogue cannot be doubted. We encourage the club to accept the proposals for mediation and begin to address the issues it has with its fans. That needs to happen sooner rather than later. Once that meeting happens, we will consult our membership on our next steps.”
So, you have both sides of the horse’s mouth. The question is, will the THST have a representative on the board, or will the board select its own compliant fan?
Let us say that the chosen one or few demand trophies and more investment in the team (which goes against Levy’s grain), then what? Who has the iron fist in this standoff? Well, it won’t be any fan, that is for sure. Anyone can make suggestions, but there is only one ruler, and that is kingpin Daniel.
It is finally here, a new super book about the greats, Glories and all you want to know about the Tottenham great players (we are not worthy!) who have graced White Hart Lane and beyond. Sixty years ago this month, the Greatest Football club in the world won the double with probably the most outstanding team on this planet.
Has your eye’s seen the Glory? If yes (or even no) click HERE and follow the link, then they/ you will, and for those that are longer in the tooth (in other words, old like me)…. be prepared to be dazzled all over again!
