Match preview: Everton v Spurs FA Cup 5th Rd.
Our Emirates FA Cup fifth-round tie away to Everton will take place at Goodison Park on Wednesday 10 February, kick-off 8.15pm.
The match will be televised live on BT Sport 1.
Everton have progressed to the fifth round with home wins against Rotherham (2-1) and Sheffield Wednesday (3-0). We beat Marine 5-0 in round three and then Wycombe 4-1 in the fourth round on Monday evening.
The first game of the season Everton humiliated us by winning 1-0 at our stadium. Since then a lot has happened to both teams. Everton are one point above us in 7th place in the league. You can be guaranteed that this game will be a totally different game than our first encounter this season. In the league, we have a better goal average than them. We also have scored more goals than them, and also have a better defence. We’ve also got Kane and Son.
We’ve had three away defeats, but bounced back against WBA (Sunday). While Everton’s last game was a 3-3 draw against Man United at Old Trafford on Saturday. Of course, this doesn’t tell you anything, as cup games are just one-offs, with plenty of surprises, and there will be no replays; if there is no score at the end of the game, the match will be decided on penalties. I am sure that we won’t get that far. Both clubs will be determined to settle the game well before the final whistle.
Team News
Everton
Everton could be without goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and playmaker James Rodriguez for the FA Cup fifth-round home tie. Pickford has missed two games with a rib injury while Colombian Rodriguez came off at Manchester United on Saturday with a tight calf.
Spurs
We could have midfielder Dele Alli back in the squad but Serge Aurier is a doubt (calf). Sergio Reguilon (muscle) and midfielder Giovani lo Celso (hamstring) are out.
Alli has not played for us since a third-round FA Cup outing at Marine on 10 January. However, Mourinho still has plans for Alli.
Mourinho said of Alli, “He went through a process of not training and trained with the sports science people and then jumped to teamwork, which he did on Monday for the first time. Nothing changed, what maybe changed is the speculation around him because in this moment everybody knows that he’s a Tottenham player and he doesn’t go to any place. So probably the end of the speculation and will be end the questions. He can train and he can try to help the team because this is what we want.”
My thoughts
I expect us to win and not just by one goal. I feel we are the stronger of the two teams and will go through to the next round. I also except Mourinho to pick a strong squad. Roughly the same team that played against WBA, with Alli and Bale getting a go from the bench (providing we are in a winning position).
Prediction: 3-1
The stats
This is the first FA Cup meeting between Everton and us since the 1994-95 semi-final, with Everton winning 4-1 at Elland Road en route to winning the trophy.
We haven’t lost consecutive meetings with Everton in all competitions since December 2012, while we haven’t lost twice to the Toffees in the same season since 1985-86.
Everton are looking to reach the FA Cup quarter-final for the first time since 2015-16. They have lost their past four ties in the competition against fellow Premier League opponents.
We have been knocked out in 10 of our past 15 FA Cup ties against fellow Premier League opponents, going out at this stage of the competition last season against Norwich.
James Rodríguez has provided the assist for three of Everton’s five FA Cup goals this season, while all five goals have been scored by different players.
Son has been involved in 20 goals in 22 appearances in the FA Cup (12 goals, eight assists), including coming off the bench in our 4-1 win at Wycombe in the last round.
