Spurs Picking up Pace for Top-four Finish.

The odds of Tottenham Hotspur making one of the four Champions League spots this season plummeted on Wednesday night after the club’s resurgence under Tim Sherwood continued with a fine 4-0 victory over Newcastle.

While it is fair to say the Magpies are suffering a real blight in form right now, credit must be given to Sherwood and his men for their pummelling performance in rather grim conditions.

Indeed, Emmanuel Adebayor’s double, Paulinho’s rebound, and a spectacular Nacer Chadli curler ensured three valuable points on the road to European qualification, but what was more impressive was the performance.

To travel 550 miles on a disgusting Wednesday night and pick up a 4-0 win is remarkable, and Spurs punters who backed them to make the top four before the game have been rewarded, as their football betting odds drop to 12/5.

Even more important were the fortunes of rivals for the top four positions. While Liverpool snuck past Fulham thanks to a late Steven Gerrard penalty, Arsenal and Manchester United played out the dullest of dull 0-0 draws. That came a day after West Brom pegged back Chelsea, and Man City’s clash with Sunderland was postponed.

Even better for Spurs is that fact they now have a week off, while the four teams above them play each other in the FA Cup. Our next clash is a Europa League trip to Dnipro on 20 February, meaning the squad has a week to recover from a rather hectic early 2014 period before that dreaded business end of the season begins.

And, in the current form Tottenham are in, a decent bet on football would be for Sherwood to secure Champions League football. This squad is firing at just the right time while our rivals falter and at this stage of the season optimism is the key to success.
