UEFA Champions League Quarter Final – 13th April 2011 – KO 19:45 – Ground: White Hart Lane
Aaron Lennon is likely to be fit for Wednesday’s Champions League clash against Real Madrid at White Hart Lane. Lennon withdrew from last week’s quarter-final first leg in the Spanish capital due to illness, and failed to recover from it in time for Saturday’s 3-2 Premier League victory over Stoke.
However, the England star trained with the rest of the Spurs squad at Chigwell on Tuesday, and should start on Wednesday as Harry Redknapp’s side look to overturn an almost impossible 4-0 deficit.
Though that is not the reasoning on Tottenham’s Jamie O’Hara, who is currently on loan at Wolves.
“People say Spurs play like Barcelona at White Hart Lane and Barcelona beat Real Madrid 5-0, so I think Spurs have got a chance,” he stated.
Lennon is likely to be up against Marcelo on the wing, and the England winger’s return will go some way to dulling the Brazilian’s attacking threat.
Gareth Bale started on the right in Lennon’s absence at the Bernabeu last Tuesday, and literally did not get a touch of the ball in the first ten minutes, before Redknapp moved him to the other flank. He was more potent from then on, but by that time Peter Crouch had been sent off for two yellow cards in the first quarter of an hour, and the Welshman’s role was then more firefighting than firestarting.
Steven Pienaar could a return from a groin injury, but Vedran Corluka (ankle) nor Niko Kranjcar (foot) are both out.
Karim Benzema has been included in Real Madrid’s squad, after missing the first leg with a hamstring injury. His place was taken by Emmanuel Adebayor, who netted twice in that win and left the field to a standing ovation from the Madrid crowd, and the Togo striker may retain his starting place on the back of that performance.
Sami Khedira is back after missing Real Madrid’s 3-0 win over Athletic Bilbao on Saturday with illness, but Pedro Leon and Fernando Gago miss out through knee and groin injuries respectively, whilst Lassana Diarra has a hip injury.
