Ledley King continues to be troubled by his groin, while Jonathan Woodgate (also groin), Jamie O’Hara (back) and Tom Huddlestone (ankle) will also be watching on.
Leading scorer Andy Carroll is hoping to boost Newcastle by returning to their starting line-up after a four-game absence with a thigh problem
Midfielder Cheik Tiote remains unavailable as he serves the second game of a three-match ban but Hatem Ben Arfa (double leg fracture) and Ryan Taylor (ankle ligaments) are still out.
