Tottenham’s thrilling Champions League campaign continued as they battled to a 3-3 draw with FC Twente, securing top spot in Group A in the process. Inter Milan’s surprise 3-0 loss against Werder Bremen in the group’s other game meant the reigning champions had to settle for second place. The Champions League betting suggests Spurs’ run can continue.
Harry Redknapp’s side took the lead through a comical howler from Twente’s keeper Sander Boschker, who managed to miss a simple back-pass from defender Peter Wisgerhof.
Twente hit back ten minutes later through a Denny Landzaat penalty after Benoit Assou-Ekotto was deemed to have handled the ball rather than choosing to take the Roberto Rosales volley straight to the face. Jermain Defoe gave his side the lead once again after only two minutes of the second half, chipping the advancing Boschker to make it 2-1 to the visitors.
Rosales grabbed his side their second equaliser on 56 minutes after heading past Heurelho Gomes from a left wing cross from Theo Janssen. Four minutes later and Defoe scored his second of the night after the striker reacted quickest to finish when Boschker had blocked a Wilson Palacios shot.
Twente then went on to score the games’ third goal in eight minutes through a Nacer Chadli 25 yard free-kick. The Belgian winger was a threat throughout the game and his stunning strike was the highlight of this exciting match.
Despite both sides having chances to win the game late on, the match finished a draw and the Dutch side will have to settle for a place in the Europa League, while Spurs have upset the football odds to go through as surprise group winners.
Going through as group winners means Spurs will avoid most of the big guns in the next round and Harry will believe anything is still possible in this competition, especially with a team that has scored 18 goals in their six group games.
