Title: World Cup 2014
Post by: dimexi on June 23, 2013, 11:26:06 AM
Have you seen the pictures of the demonstrations going on in Brazil right now? Millions of people protesting against their government for wasting their money etc. on things like the World Cup. Now that is how you protest.

Usually, I don't go with the hype of not going to places because it is too dangerous. Been to Rio, it was a great place. However, I would seriously consider the situation if it was like this next year.

World Cup is so over rated. Club football anyday for me.

I think it is a shame that this is the growing trend. But the football authorities only have themselves to blame for the way that it is changing across the world. Not that they care as long as they are getting their bungs and backhanders.

1990 was the last of the great world cups for me. 1994 USA Poor, 1998 France (unfortunate), 2002 Korea/Japan - average, 2006 Germany mediocre, 2010 South Africa disaster.

2014 Brazil no surprises?

Fifa general secretary Jerome Valcke says the 2014 World Cup will definitely be staged in Brazil, despite admitting he had been involved in talks with the government to decide whether to cancel the Confederations Cup because of protests.

Don't that just have that many people on the streets for their street parties?

Seriously though, it does look pretty mental!

Was speaking to a mate of mine who travels all over watching England play.
He went to Brazil England game few weeks ago. He said there was no trouble at all and they felt safe.

Media always go out looking for trouble and report it and make a big thing about it.
It's just small areas. If you want trouble then you will get it.

Overwise go about your own business and you'll be fine.

Well, well, well... Argentina can certainly be happy, not so sure about England. I think there is a chance they won't progress from group stages.  :(

  Oh Riff, Riff, Riff,
Do I smell a little bit of wishful thinking? Surely not! I am sure it is written in the Stars that The Mighty, Mighty, England are bound for GLORY, or is that my wishful thinking? :D :D

 ;) ;) ;)

I sure hope England progress. Given how they're playing Uruguay, I have twice as much reason to root for England. The Urugimps can go home with nothing for all I care. :tickedoff: Seriously, I'd even root for Italy against them. And I don't think that Costa Rica will do much at all.

I'm more worried about my Oranje over in Group B.

I'll be all but ignoring Group E.

IDK... England might have a chance to get past the group stage.

The Netherlands still takes priority for me. They've been my favourite international team that actually makes the World Cup (as opposed to Canada, who hasn't been since I was three :P ) but my dream final out of this year's crop would be the Netherlands vs. England... if it's possible, anyway. ;)

I'd rather see England and Costa Rica emerge from that group, but I'd take England and Italy. Even though I like Edinson Cavani, I can't abide Uruguay on the whole.

While El Tri can count on a band of high-profile overseas-based players, spearheaded by Javier Chicharito Hernandez, Andres Guardado and Giovani dos Santos, the last few months have shown that the latest wave of young players also have much to offer, chief among them their London 2012 hero Oribe Peralta, Raul Jimenez and Carlos Pena. Spain Squad

Forwards: Diego Costa, David Villa (both Atletico Madrid), Alvaro Negredo (Manchester City), Pedro Rodriguez (Barcelona), Fernando Llorente (Juventus), Fernando Torres (Chelsea).

Coach: Vicente del Bosque

The key players

Though there is no doubt that Spain’s embarrassment of midfield riches, featuring the likes of Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Xabi Alonso, has been integral to their major trophy triumphs, La Selección are strong across the board.

The men in red have a phalanx of very reliable keepers to call on, headed by Iker Casillas, while Sergio Ramos and Gerard Pique have consolidated their positions as the leaders of a defence in which left-back Jordi Alba has gone from strength to strength. Ramos and Alba are also a threat in the opposing box, and in recent times have made goalscoring contributions that have been almost as decisive as those of the front men.

With both David Villa and Fernando Torres struggling to find their touch, Pedro has distinguished himself as an attacking spearhead, ably supported by Cesc Fabregas, while Alvaro Negredo has begun to stake a compelling claim of his own for the striking role.

The Liverpool man ended the South American preliminaries as the leading scorer with 11 goals, and was the second most-used player by coach Oscar Tabarez. The deadly duo have plenty of ballast behind them, with the vastly experienced Diego Lugano directing rearguard operations with aplomb, and Fernando Muslera providing a safe pair of hands between the posts. Even so, after an often-troubled qualifying campaign El Maestro Tabarez will no doubt be looking to shuffle his pack and build up some momentum ahead of Brazil 2014.

Coach - Stephen Keshi

The key players
Coach Stephen Keshi has earned a reputation as a no-nonsense boss who is not afraid to choose in-form domestic players at the expense of more well-known stars, and that policy paid handsome dividends as Nigeria won the 2013 edition of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations. Keshi has kept a relatively stable spine of the team since then, with Chelsea's John Obi Mikel leaving his mixed past with the Eagles behind to become the lynchpin of the side. In goal, Vincent Enyeama is an important veteran, while Victor Moses, Ahmed Musa and Emmanuel Emenike are key parts of a deep attack.

The key players
As he showed in the play-off against Sweden, Cristiano Ronaldo is still very much Portugal’s go-to man, though the peerless Real Madrid star is supported is by a very able cast. The central-defensive pairing of Pepe and Bruno Alves is the cornerstone of a very solid rearguard that also features flying full-backs Joao Pereira and Fabio Coentrao. Jozy Altidore, of English Premier League outfit Sunderland, emerged as the complete package during the final qualifying competition. Left out of the team due to poor form and attitude in the semi-final round,  Klinsmann reconsidered and wasn’t let down by his burly striker, who scored goals for fun and was the perfect partner for Clint Dempsey in attack. Beautifully with the sturdy central midfield presence of Roma’s Michael Bradley. With Tim Howard still a dominant presence between the sticks, the Americans are loaded with ability wherever you look.

3 Days to go..Up Next Russia
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/ec/Russia_football_association.png)

Russia squad:
Goalkeepers: Igor Akinfeev (CSKA Moscow), Yury Lodygin (Zenit St Petersburg), Sergei Ryzhikov (Rubin Kazan)

Defenders: Vasily Berezutsky, Sergei Ignashevich, Georgy Shchennikov (all CSKA Moscow), Vladimir Granat, Alexei Kozlov (both Dynamo Moscow), Andrei Yeschenko (Anzhi Makhachkala), Dmitry Kombarov (Spartak Moscow), Andrei Semenov (Terek Grozny)

Midfielders: Igor Denisov, Yury Zhirkov (both Dynamo Moscow), Alan Dzagoev (CSKA Moscow), Roman Shirokov (FC Krasnodar), Denis Glushakov (Spartak Moscow), Viktor Faizulin, Oleg Shatov (both Zenit St Petersburg)

Forwards: Alexander Kerzhakov (Zenit St Petersburg), Alexei Ionov, Alexander Kokorin (both Dynamo Moscow), Maxim Kanunnikov (Amkar Perm), Alexander Samedov (Lokomotiv Moscow)

Current coach: Fabio Capello

The key players
This latest Russian side is built on solid defensive foundations. Goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev did not miss a single minute of the qualifying competition and conceded just five goals during the course of it, while Sergey Ignashevich marshalled the defence with aplomb. Yet Fabio Capello’s most prized assets can be found in what is a technically gifted and astute midfield unit, where Roman Shirokov and Victor Fayzulin have continued to hone the partnership they have forged at Zenit St Petersburg, scoring six goals between them in the qualifiers.
Perhaps not surprisingly, the team’s top scorer was Kerzhakov. Though not always a starter, the Zenit striker helped himself to five goals during the campaign, the most important of them being that winner against the Portuguese. A lethal finisher, the former Sevilla man could wreak havoc in Brazil.

They will Play South Korea first

       Southend,
What can I say, I really do not think there is anything that I can say other than THANKYOU. What you have written over the last 32, sorry 33 days has been amazing, you have not only critiqued every participating team in their respective groups, but you have also, IMO, given us an amazing build-up to what is a month long celebration of the game we all love, and that is FOOTBALL. Then you round it all off with a video, and if that doesn't whet the appetites, then nothing will, I for one am really looking forward to this World Cup in the home of the SAMBA KINGS. Thankyou very much, AMAZING.
Yes I am definitely in the mood

Group A Brazil v Croatia
Arena de Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo Date: Thursday, 12 June Kick-off: 21:00BST

World Cup hosts Brazil are expected to face Croatia with the same starting line-up that beat Spain in last summer's Confederations Cup final.
That means playmaker Oscar is likely to start despite his recent poor form and a Brazilian media lobby for his Chelsea team-mate Willian.
Croatia are without suspended striker Mario Mandzukic, so Nikica Jelavic or Eduardo will deputise.
Sime Vrsaljko will play at left-back in place of the injured Danijel Pranjic.

Brazil beat Croatia 1-0 with a goal from Kaka in their only previous World Cup meeting during the 2006 group stage in Berlin.
The two sides drew 1-1 in Split in August 2005 in their only other encounter.

My Prediction Brazil 2-1 Croatia

Group A
Mexico v Cameroon
Venue: Arena das Dunas, Natal Date: Friday 13 June Kick-off: 17:00 BST

Mexico coach Miguel Herrera has confirmed that striker Javier Hernandez will not start against Cameroon, having gone nine matches without a goal.
Giovani dos Santos will instead partner Oribe Peralta in attack, while Guillermo Ochoa is preferred in goal to Jose Corona.
Cameroon captain Samuel Eto'o is a doubt, having trained intermittently during the last few weeks.
Jean Makoun has just returned from an ankle injury and is unlikely to start.

This is only the second meeting between these two countries; Mexico won 1-0 in a friendly in Los Angeles in 1993.
Mexico have never beaten an African team in the World Cup in three attempts.

Group B
Spain v Netherlands
Venue: Arena Fonte Nova, Salvador Date: Friday 13 June Kick-off: 20:00 BST

Spain begin the defence of their World Cup crown with a fully-fit squad from which to choose.
Brazil-born striker Diego Costa has recovered from the injury problems that blighted the end of his club season.
Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal is expected to start with the 5-3-2 formation he has trialled in their warm-up matches.
Jonathan de Guzman is fit again after a hamstring injury, while Wesley Sneijder is in line to win his 100th cap.
Striker Robin van Persie is due to start despite being troubled by fitness problems with his groin and knee during Manchester United's campaign.

This is the first time in World Cup history that the finalists from the previous tournament have met in their first game.
Spain lead by five wins to four from their 10 previous meetings. The only draw was a friendly match in Barcelona in 1987 that finished 1-1.
Their only previous World Cup encounter was in the 2010 final, which Spain won 1-0
Spain have 16 returning players from their squad at the 2010 tournament - the Netherlands have seven.

Chile v Australia
Arena Pantanal, Cuiaba Date: Friday 13 June 2014 Kick-off: 23:00 BST

Chile coach Jorge Sampaoli says there is a "high possibility" that Arturo Vidal will be fit enough to play after training fully for the last three days.
Gary Medel is expected to operate in central defence, rather than the midfield role he has for Cardiff City.
Australia coach Ange Postecoglou has to decide whether or not to start veteran midfielder Mark Bresciano, who has been troubled by a back injury.
Crystal Palace midfielder Mile Jedinak will skipper the Socceroos.

Australia's first-ever point in a World Cup group came in a 0-0 draw against Chile in June 1974. It remains the Socceroos' only clean sheet in 10 World Cup matches.
Australia have never beaten La Roja in any competition, drawing that World Cup match and losing three other friendlies so far.

Im still to watch yesterday highlights...
Group C
Colombia v Greece
Estadio Mineirao, Belo Horizonte Date: Saturday 14 June Kick-off: 17:00 BST

Colombia lost Radamel Falcao, Edwin Valencia, Luis Perea and Aldo Ramirez to injury before the World Cup and Fredy Guarin is suspended.
Falcao's absence means either Carlos Bacca or Jackson Martinez will partner Teofilo Gutierrez up front.
Greece will assess defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos, who missed their last two friendlies with a muscle problem.

Coach Fernando Santos must decide if Kostas Mitroglou is ready to start after recovering from a knee injury.
Santos will have midfielder Panagiotis Tachtsidis available after he recovered from the shoulder injury he picked up in training this week.

The only previous meeting between the sides was a friendly in New York on 5 June 1994 which Colombia won 2-0.

Group D
Uruguay v Costa Rica
Estadio Castelao, Fortaleza Date: Saturday 14 June Kick-off: 20:00 BST

Uruguay's talismanic striker Luis Suarez is back in full training after knee surgery but is not under consideration to play.
Diego Forlan will deputise for him having recovered from a stomach complaint earlier in this week.
Costa Rica are expected to start with Joel Campbell up front, with Alvaro Saborio ruled out of the tournament.
Michael Umana and Junior Diaz have both been suffering with flu this week and will be assessed.

Uruguay have never lost to Costa Rica in eight previous meetings (W6, D2).
Le Celeste beat Costa Rica 2-1 in a play-off to qualify for the 2010 World Cup finals.
Uruguay head coach Oscar Tabarez won his only previous meeting with Costa Rica head coach Jorge Luis Pinto at international level. Taberez's Uruguay beat Pinto's Colombia side 1-0 in 2008.

England v Italy
Arena Amazonia, Manaus Date: Saturday 14 June Kick-off: 23:00 BST

England forward Danny Welbeck has been passed fit having overcome the ankle injury he suffered earlier this week.
However, the Italy game comes too early for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as he continues to build up his fitness following a recent knee injury.
Italy may play with three centre-backs after full-back Mattia De Sciglio was ruled out with a thigh strain.
Mario Balotelli has recovered from a minor hernia problem, while Marco Verratti is fit after flu.

The only previous World Cup meeting between these two nations came in the third-place play-off in 1990 when Italy won 2-1.
England have only won two of their last 11 internationals against Italy, losing six plus the penalty shootout defeat at Euro 2012.
Roy Hodgson's side won 2-1 when the sides last met, in a friendly in Switzerland in August 2012.

Group C
Ivory Coast v Japan
Arena Pernambuco, Recife Date: Sunday 15 June Kick-off: 02:00 BST

Ivory Coast coach Sabri Lamouchi expects Yaya Toure to be available despite a thigh injury, but admits not all his players are "100% fit".
Toure's elder brother Kolo is available after recovering from malaria.
Japan captain Makoto Hasebe is fit after a long-term knee problem but faces competition from Hotaru Yamaguchi for a midfield starting spot.
Defenders Maya Yoshida and Atsuto Uchida have also recently returned from lengthy absences and will play.

Japan have won two of their three previous meetings with the Ivory Coast, which came on home turf in friendlies in 1993 and 2008.
The African side won the most recent encounter, beating the Blue Samurai 2-0 in a World Cup warm-up game in Switzerland in June 2010.
Didier Drogba and Kolo Toure got the goals, but Drogba broke a bone in his arm, an injury which severely hampered him in South Africa.

Brazil captain Thiago Silva is banned, so Dante will deputise, but they have Luis Gustavo back from suspension.
With Neymar injured, Brazil could field a central midfield three, or else pick an attack-minded replacement such as Willian or Bernard.
Germany coach Joachim Low must decide whether to recall centre-back Per Mertesacker, who was left out against France for tactical reasons.
Low has reported no fresh injury concerns ahead of the match.

Netherlands v Argentina 9 p.m.

Netherlands striker Robin van Persie may miss the World Cup semi-final after struggling with a stomach complaint.
But midfielder Nigel de Jong could feature after recovering from a groin injury, which was expected to rule him out for the rest of the tournament.
Argentina midfielder Angel Di Maria is out because of a thigh injury but may return.

Netherlands v Argentina: Louis van Gaal - score first, stop Lionel MessiStriker Sergio Aguero is available after a thigh problem and left-back Marcos Rojo will return after a ban.
Dutch injury doubts Ron Vlaar and Leroy Fer took part in full training on Tuesday, but Van Persie trained away from his team-mates.
However, manager Louis van Gaal said the Manchester United striker would only play if he was completely fit.
"Robin van Persie has an intestinal problem and I didn't want to take a risk," said Van Gaal. "He is a very important player for us.
"In principle, my captains always play, but only if they're 100%."
AC Milan's De Jong has not played since tearing a groin muscle during his side's  win in the last 16 on 29 June.
He was expected to be out for up to four weeks, but has returned to training.
"If his reaction is good and he can play, then the miracle can come true," added Van Gaal.

So this evening we have the 3rd/4th place playoff - Brazil v Netherlands(21.00)
Brazil will welcome back captain Thiago Silva to the centre of defence after he missed the 7-1 defeat BY Germany through suspension.
Coach Luiz Felipe Scolari is expected to make several other changes as the hosts try to salvage some pride.
Netherlands are also set to rotate their squad, so the likes of Memphis Depay and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar could earn starts.
Goalkeeper Michel Vorm is the only Dutch player yet to feature in Brazil.

Argentina v Germany 21.00

Germany centre-back Mats Hummels missed the second half against Brazil as a precaution because of tendonitis, but is expected to be available.
The Germans could name the same side which thrashed the hosts 7-1.
Argentina's Angel Di Maria has returned to light training after a thigh injury, but is unlikely to be fit to start.
Striker Sergio Aguero is fully recovered from a similar problem and could replace either Ezequiel Lavezzi or Gonzalo Higuain.
Argentina fielded Higuain, Aguero and Lionel Messi as part of a front three earlier on in the tournament.
However, they may be reluctant to pick such an attacking line-up against the in-form Germans.
Left-back Marcos Rojo failed to complete a training session on Friday because of a sore ankle but the problem is not thought to be serious.
