Which keeper?
« on: September 12, 2011, 12:18:35 PM »
According to various sources Redknapp has confirmed that Gomes could be moved on in January.

I still think that Gomes is better than Cudicini and should be kept as number two but obviously he could get a number one spot somewhere else. I also believe that it is somewhat Gomes' own fault as he has made some awful howlers despite being one of the top shot-stoppers in the league. Friedel, on the other hand, has proven to be a good signing although I'm not so sure how many years he has left in him.

I voted for the 40year old american potato.
Cuducini would be my second vote.
I wouldnt make a third choice sorry.

Unlike strikers people tend to remember the mistakes a keeper makes rather than the saves. If this was not the case we would have sold DeFoe years ago. On balance I think Gomes has made so many saves other keepers would not have, and this out . ways his errors, so it's Gomes for me.
I am never wrong !!

In the long term I dont think any of them are the answer. Friedel gets my vote for now but time is against him so we will soon find ourselves looking for another 'keeper.

Note Friedel is not registered in the squad for Europa group matches, though he could replace Gomes in January.
Long term take a look at the French keeper at Lille. It's no coincidence that Lille won the French double last season, and they have already signed a potential replacement - the Nigerian keeper.

Gomes made a few mistakes but his out of this world saves gave us more points than his mistakes cost us!

Unfortunately his face doesnt fit as far as Arry is concerned and I cant see him staying with us past January and will no doubt go to another team that has ambition and will appreciate a keeper of hsi quality.

Friedal is playing well at the moment but he is not long term and neither is Cudicini, we need to bring in a keeper that will be our long term number one so he can get an undertsnading and the confidence of the defence etc.  All teams that have continued success has a solid number 1, a solid team starts from the back.

Shay Given would have fit that bill and he went for a bargian price we missed out on that one!

Friedel has brought stability to our defence. If we had him last year we might have made top 4.

Agree that Freidel is no.1 for the rest of the season at the most, which for me is not much of a choice. He has so far been the most reliable in what I would call a "dodgy trio".  We have 2 aging keepers and one unreliable young one. I would hope that if Gomes goes in Jan, Harry has already looked around for a long term replacement well below retirement age. 2 keepers with a combined age of 80+ does not look good if you are serious about 4th place.

I will admit I wasn't keen on Friedel because of his age, but he has won me over.

I gotta admit I have been a Gomes supporter from day one but it does seem his days with us are numbered and he will not regain no1 as his face no longer fits with Arry, he has lost confidence being dropped due to massive howlers (super saves over looked) so I wish him luck on a move in Januray!

I was another who was not keen on the signing of Friedel as he is not one that will be around in a couple of seasons time but I have to admit I am happy with how he has done and he is our no1 this season, we need to be looking for a long term no 1 though as at most Brad can surely maintain his awesome level for another season at most and that could be pushing it?

Friedel seems steady enough at the moment and Gomes had a good game midweek.
Agree to finding a younger replacement in the very near future.

Gomes technically is a good keeper, but he is a total liability and as such cannot be kept at the club.
