Modric tempted to stay by record Spurs offer

Luka Modric could be tempted to stay at White Hart Lane after Spurs chairman Daniel Levy reportedly ready to offer the Croatian the biggest pay deal in the club’s history in order to stave off Chelsea, who had a bid for the midfielder turned down earlier this month.

Chelsea had an initial offer of £22 million turned for the 25-year-old turned down by Levy, and are said to have offered a slightly improved figure that was also rejected by the Spurs chairman

Modric signed a six year deal with the London club last year, but has been tempted away by the promise of regular Champions League football, but both Levy and Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp remain adamant that the Croatian international is going nowhere.

Now Levy is said to be prepared to offer Modric around £90,000 a week to keep him at the club – a figure that would comfortably make him the club’s highest earner.

If Spurs are able to convince Modric of their ambitions and tie him down into an even longer deal, it would represent a huge step forward for the club as they go in search of becoming an established member of the top four.

Rumours circulated last week that Gareth Bale would consider leaving the club if the skilful playmaker was sold, and Redknapp has made keeping hold of two of his leading lights as his top priority this summer.

The balance appears to have tipped slightly in Spurs favour as the bookies back Modric to stay in North London for at least another season, with football bets suggesting he will stay put for the foreseeable future.

Bookmakers see the appointment of Andre Villas-Boas as the new Chelsea boss as an indication that Chelsea may shift their focus in the transfer market, with the 33-year-old likely to be keen to pursue his own targets.

However the appointment of the former Porto boss at Stamford Bridge could spell bad news for Spurs one respect as one of the club’s main transfer targets, with football betting suggesting Radamel Falcao, will follow his former boss to Chelsea in a deal worth around £26 million.

  1. it’s blackmail; will the other players start whingeing if this goes through? the only reason we’re not in the champions league is because the team didn’t win their games. sheesh!

  2. THE REASON WE ARE NOT IN THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE, IS COS REDNAPP HAS OFFICIALLY SAID THT WE ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH..EVEN THOUGH ONW MONTH PREVIOUS, HE HAS STATED THAT WE SHOULD BE WINNING THE LEAGUE. wHAT A CU***

  3. I don’t see the point in breaking the bank for him and getting him to sign another deal so soon after the last one. What’s to stop him saying exactly the same thing (wants to go to Chelsea) straight after siging this new deal or in January? Get rid now at the highest possible price. If it’s just down to money with him then he can get lost now. If he wants Champions League then maybe he should have scored more goals last season for us. To think the supporters voted this rat player of the season!

  4. Fantastic player to watch, pulls midfields strings keeps the ball.moving great passing record, but i would let him go for 35+ mil, reason paying a player these wages can upset the apple cart with the rest of the team, he will leave next year if we fail to qualify again, and finally he is flawed at present as he rarely scores or assists which is awful for a player in his position.

  5. It is not about the money. When Modric signed his last (current) contract he was ashamed of people back home knowing how much money he was making. Chelsea is a Champions League team and that is what Modric wants. Now the huge pay increase is just an attempt to bribe him not to leave. The situation is unfortunate but not uncommon. Chelsea should be punished for tampering; THAT is the real problem here because any player would like to play for one of the top clubs in the world. Stop being so sensitive.

  6. let him go the fans do not need another berbatov saga modric called levy arragont ang on a minute HYPOCRIT he was a no body when he came spurs and will be a no body when he leaves and goes to chelsea its all about money with him not champions league there is no loyalty very disrespectful. he should not get a pay increase as i feel there are more important players in the team than him i would be more annoyed if we let people like azza go or jd but modric can b replaced by vdv or sandro or by some1 new we could get out of the money we get for him.
